Shailputri: The First form of Mother Goddess Durga
Dedicated to the Mother Goddess Durga, Navaratri is a major festival which is celebrated all over India and Nepal. One of all nine forms of Devi Durga is worshipped every day in Navaratri.

The first form of Maa Durga is Shailputri, who was born to the King of Mountains. “Shail” means mountain and “putri” means daughter. Hence, she is called Shailputri – the daughter of mountain. Maa Shailputri, an absolute form of Mother Nature, is worshipped on the first day of Navaratri. She is also referred to as Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva and mother of Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya.

As the embodiment of Mother Nature, Prakriti, she looks after all living organisms including human beings, animals, trees, shrubs, plants and even tiny living things on Earth.

The image of Maa Shailputri is a divine lady, holding a Trishul (trident) in her right hand and lotus flower in her left hand. A half moon decorates her forehead and she rides on Nandi.

According to Shiv Mahapurana and other scriptures, Sati married Mahadev against the wishes of her father, King Daksha who was not happy to see his daughter marry an ascetic living in isolation among ghosts and ghouls.

King Daksha organized a Maha Yajna and invited everyone except Shiva and Sati. Deeply hurt, Sati reasoned within herself that her parents had neglected to make a formal invitation to them simply because an invitation was not necessary for family members. She resolved to go to the yajna despite attempts by Shiva to dissuade her.

Upon her arrival, King Daksha humiliated both Sati and Shiva in front of everyone present at the yajna. Humiliated by her father’s behaviour and wanting nothing more to do with her family, she sacrificed her body in the yogic fire.

Deeply shocked and saddened then enraged upon hearing the news of Sati’s death, Shiva tore his hair out and fashioned Virabhadra, the fiercest of warriors. He then commanded Virabhadra to go to the yajna and destroy Daksha and all present at the occasion. Upon Shiva’s orders Virabhadra stormed the ceremony and killed Daksha along with many of the guests.

With his anger finally gone only to be replaced by sorrow, Shiva absorbed Virbhadra into his own form and revived Daskha’s body by giving it the head of a goat. Shiva then carefully picked up Sati’s body and walked away from the scene, not knowing where he was going but simply wanting to be a recluse again.

The other gods tried to bring Shiva out of his mourning but despite several efforts, could do nothing but desperately watch as he roamed the earth and bellowed to the howling winds. They finally called upon Lord Vishnu to return Shiva to sanity who used his Sudarshana Chakra to cut Sati’s lifeless body into 52 pieces. These pieces fell at various places and became places of pilgrimage called Shakti Peethas.

With the last part of the body falling away, Shiva sat down at the banks of the source of Ganges and went into a long meditative mode until he remembered who he was and what he had gone through.

Without Shiva, the whole universe was in disorder.

Sati was reborn again as Parvati in the home of King Himalaya, bringing in rays of hope for normalcy to return to the world. Shiva continued to remain lost in the densest of sadhana and it became very difficult for Parvati to wake him up and recognize her.

With great efforts and immense devotion, Parvati is finally able to break through the barrier she is faced with and remarries Mahadev.

Shailputri symbolizes as the true Goddess of root chakra, Muladhara. Her awakening was toward establishing universal love with Lord Shiva that glorified her as the Goddess of awareness. Upon awakening this Shakti, one begins their journey towards spiritual awakening and their purpose in life. Without energizing this chakra, one doesn’t have the power and strength to do anything worthwhile.

To make full use of this precious human life, it is said that one should worship Maa Shailputri and it is for this reason that this Avatar of Mother Goddess Durga is worshipped on the first day of Navaratri.

The name Shailaputri means the daughter of Mountains (Shaila means mountain and Putri means daughter), also the names Parvathi (Daughter of Parvatha- Himavantha), Haimavathi (Daughter of snow-capped one) gives the same meaning.

Worshipping this Goddess is known to fulfill the wishes of the devotee along with her mercy.

What do Hindu Scriptures say about Goddess Shailaputri?
Several Shaivagamas describes the 9 forms of Durga, in which Goddess Shailaputri is one among them. While Devi scriptures like Chandi sataka mentions her as a form of Chandi.

According to the Kurma Purana, Devi Shailaputri is mentioned as the goddess, who accepted the request of daughter-ship from her devotee Shaila – king of the Mountains.

Also, a description of this Goddess along with the other Navadurga’s can be found in the Durga saptashati.

Several books on Shakthi has also mentioned the name of this goddess as one among the 64 yoginis. Also, itihasas like Mahabharata has used the name Shailaputri like a synonym to the name Parvathi.

Goddess Shailaputri and Kundalini
Goddess Shailaputri also plays an important role in the Kundalini vidya, as she is known to be associated with the Muladhara chakra of Kundalini.

Iconography
Goddess Shailaputri is described in several hymns, Agamas as the one riding on a bull, adorned with a crescent moon on her head and having two hands in which the right one is described holding a trident and the left holding a lotus. In some depictions, the lotus on her left hand is replaced by a Damaru (drum).

Story of Goddess Shailaputri
Goddess Sati and her Sacrifice
Goddess Parvati in her previous incarnation was born as Devi Sati, as the daughter of Daksha Prajapati. However, due to a conflict with Shiva, Daksha conducted a nireeshwarayaga (Yagna without Ishwara) without calling God Shiva and Sati Devi to the ritual.

However, Goddess Sati came to know about that and thought to go to that yagna, in order to correct the wrong actions of her father Daksha.

However, God Shiva refused her not to go as Daksha didn’t invite. But Goddess Sati urged Shiva saying that she is going to rectify the mistake of her father for which she need to go. Unwillingly, God Shiva accepted. However, he sent Nandi and other ganas along with her to the yagnashala.

At the Dakshas yagna, Goddess Sati is unwelcomed, but she urged his father to stop such a yagna, saying that doing such a yagna can lead to Ishwara papa.

Daksha didn’t listen to her words and moreover he insulted God Shiva with his words.

Angered by this, Goddess Sati scolded her father Daksha along with all the gods who came to that nirishwara yaga. She then reminded Daksha about his behavior and said that you will pay off for your acts.

At the same time, she said to Daksha that being born as his daughter, she no more want to be called with the name Dakshayani. I can’t be a daughter to the one who rejects God Shiva as supreme.

Later Goddess Sati, sacrificed her body in the yogic fire generated from her body. Then God Shiva sent Veerabhadra along with Shiva ganas to destroy the Daksha yagna.

Goddess Sati Reincarnated as Parvati or Shailaputri
Later to reunite with God Shiva, Devi took another form as Shailaputri or Parvati as the daughter of Himavanta and Menka devi.

Once upon a time, Menaka Devi, the wife of Himavantha thought to have the supreme goddess as her daughter, due to the deep sorrow as their son named Mainaka is living inside the deep ocean fearing to the Indra’s Vajrayudha.

So, in order to have a child in their presence, Devi Menaka along with Himavanta had done pujas and penances on Parashakthi with the utmost devotion to fulfill their wish of getting the divine Goddess herself as their daughter.

One day Goddess Shakthi on her wish to reincarnate and marry God shiva, blessed Himavantha and Menaka that she will be born as their daughter.

Like that the incarnation of this Goddess had occurred.

As she is the daughter of the mountain Himavantha, she was referred with names like Parvati, Shailaputri, Himavathi, and Adrija.

(1) Devī Śailaputrī

ॐ देवी शैलपुत्र्यै नमः॥Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah॥

The first form of Goddess Durga is Śailaputrī. She is the Goddess of Inspiration.

She is the daughter of the King of Mountains – Himalaya. King Himalaya and his wife Menaka performed many austerities and Divine Mother was pleased with them and descended onto Earth as their daughter. The root “Shaila” means mountain and “putri” is daughter.

She represents the one-pointed attention on the “Oneness” (God, Source Divinity). She is the face focusing on the Oneness and thus resembles the Supreme Mother in Her essence.

Śailaputrī Devī rides on a bull (Nandi) while holding a trident in Her right hand and a lotus in the left hand. She has a half/quarter-moon on her forehead (ardha-chandra), located on her crown. Here is the symbolic significance of each:

Nandi (bull): Nandi’s attention is always focused on Lord Shiva (God). Go to any Hindu Temple and you will see Nandi always looking directly at Lord Shiva. Similarly, Śailaputrī too has her focus turned toward God. In addition the bull is symbolic of determination, which is needed particularly at the start of our spiritual journey.

Trident: The trident is representative of past, present, future, which are qualities of the mind. It is also symbolic of three gunas (natures) which provide multiplicity in manifestation: creation (sattva), maintenance (rajas), and destruction (tamas). Mother protects Her devotional children with the Trident.

Lotus Flower: The Lotus Flower in her hand is half bloomed, meaning it is in the process of blooming, or newly awakened. It symbolizes the awakening of kundalini and represents peace and purity. The flower blooms in the muckiest of water and yet is spared from entanglement in it. Similarly, tapping into Śailaputrī Devī ‘s energy will bring purity and keep the devotee free from maya, selfishness, and worldliness, which helps to keep us focused on the spiritual path.

Half/Quarter-moon: The moon signifies the infinity of Nature, the contentment of being in union with the Bindu, which is infinite consciousness.

Śailaputrī Devī goes by many different names which describe her attributes. By worshiping Her, the spiritual aspirant attains these qualities:

Parvati: is known as the daughter of the mountains (parvatī)- a rugged mountain woman. Because of Her residence in Mt. Kailas, She also goes by the name of Gauri, which means white, shining, and brilliant like the snow-caps of the mountains.

Sati: This from of the Mother is purifying, and specifically brings clarity in a sometimes chaotic world. Purity and clarity provide a one-two punch to spark the seed of inspiration, and it is this inspiration that creates a yearning to be on the spiritual path.

Bhavani is the giver of life and has power over nature. She sustains the cycles, routines, and natural order of the universe. In this sense, Śailaputrī Devī manifests as Mother Nature herself.

In the human body, Shailputri is likened to the Muladhara Chakra (root chakra which is grounded to Mother Earth). Upon initial awakening of the kundalini energy (half bloomed lotus) in the root chakra, it begins its journey upwards.

Symbolically this is shown by Śailaputrī Devī sitting on Nandi (with complete focus on Shiva) as Her energy makes the journey from the root chakra to to the Ajna Chakra (third eye) where Lord Shiva resides.

Interestingly, the story of Sati Maa symbolically represents this “awakening” as She transitioned from her father to her husband, Shiva. Her life is the story of the awakening of Shakti and the resulting empowerment over Her father’s will.

This first step, the awakening of Shakti, brings us inspiration to search for Lord Shiva, who resides in the third eye, between the eye brows. It is the foundation of our sadhana.

Navaratri Worship: The first day of Navaratri is very auspicious as it is the beginning of the nine days. By focusing on the Muladhara chakra and praying to Śailaputrī Devī, our body comes into resonance with Mother’s energy. This lays the foundation for the rest of Navaratri and is the starting point of spiritual discipline.
