Tripura means three cities or three worlds (Lokas), while Sundari means- a beautiful woman. The three cities symbolize the body, mind, and consciousness. Thus, Tripurasundari is known as the beautiful lady of the three cities or the three worlds. She is a chief aspect of Adi Parashakti, the third of the ten wisdom goddesses, Mahavidyas.

Tripura Sundari is represented as a manifestation of goddess Parvati, similar to Durga and Mahakali. She is the primeval creator along with Lord Shiva. Tripura Sundari is the highest aspect of Goddess Adi Parashakti as per the Srikula tradition. Above Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, the Hindu Trinity, she is called the supreme consciousness or Supreme Brahman.

Goddess Tripura Sundari is portrayed in three forms: Tripura Bala, Tripura Sundari, and Tripura Bhairavi.

Tripura Bala represents a young virgin goddess, whereas Tripura Sundari represents the marvelous eternal beauty of the three worlds. The third form of Tripura Bhairava is the terrible power of the Goddess Lalita. Bhairavi is one of the Mahavidya, ten aspects of Adi Shakti. While her other two forms are central to the Sri Vidya tradition rooted in the worship of Sri Chakra are different names of Tripura Sundari.

Goddess Tripura Sundari is the consort of Lord Shiva. She creates, protects, and destroys the universe along with Lord Shiva. She is none other than Goddess SatiDurga, and Mahakali.

Tripurasundari is known by many different names across various texts and stories. Among her thousand names, she is also known as Shodashi, a sixteen-year-old, and Balasundari, a child form of Devi. Her nature is to play, seek experience, and charm others to her. Her innocence attracts all toward her.

Tripurasundari is believed to represent sixteen types of desires. Shodashi also refers to the 16-syllable mantra, consisting of the fifteen-syllable mantra and a final seed syllable. Therefore, as a young woman of 16, Shodasi leads the individuals on the spiritual path with discrimination, symbolizing the individual, the ardor, and innocence toward God.

She is also known as Lalita. Lalita means brilliant and bright beyond the limit that can play others. Lalita is also the representation of the creation, manifestation, and dissolution of the universe.

Tripurasundari is also called Rajarajeshwari. She is known as the governess of the entire Universe. She gave commands of governing the macrocosm. Thus, it becomes essential to respect her and remember her grace whenever we need to make a difficult decision in our lives.

The appearance of Goddess Tripura Sundari

Tripura Sundari is glowing like a rising sun, scattering delights of joy, compassion, and knowledge. She is portrayed as a beautiful young girl of sixteen with red and golden skin and three bewitching eyes, a wagging tongue, fearful teeth, and four arms.

Goddess Tripura Sundari grasps a noose, a goad, a bow, and an arrow in each of her hands. The noose symbolizes attachment; the goad represents repulsion; the sugarcane bow denotes the mind and desires. The flowery arrows are the five sense objects due to such good looks and beauty that her consort Lord Shiva himself could not take away his eyes from her.

She is abundantly ornamented with ornaments. She is pictured as a sweet girl of sixteen. She is portrayed in several ways. As Goddess Kali, she sits naked and shares the characteristics of the ferocious mother. She is also shown seated on the lotus, which is placed on the flat body of Shiva, who is lying in a peaceful posture on a throne held by Lord Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and Rudra.
