If a person without Mangal Dosha marries a person with it, their marriage might fail.

Here, in this article, we will look into how Mangal Dosha happens, its different types, effects, and remedies.

As mentioned earlier, we can relate Mangal Dosha to Lord Mars.

He is the commander-in-chief of the Celestial cabinet and the God of War, as per the Hindu Mythology.

Lord Mars can be aggressive, and people with his presence in their Kundalini could imbibe his characteristics.

Mars could be cruel and present truthful events in such a light.

He is also malefic and can give the person with Mangal Dosha the ability to fight.

It can be a reason that leads to conflicts between married couples.

Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha occurs when Mangal or Mars ascends in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth, or twelfth house of a horoscope chart.

When Mars is present here, it can result in tension, dissatisfaction, and marital life could end as a disaster.

Types of Mangal Dosha:

There are mainly two types of Mangal Dosha.

They are High Mangal Dosha and Low Mangal Dosha.

High Mangal Dosha refers to a condition when Mars is present in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth, or twelfth houses of your three charts.

The three charts include the Moon chart, Venus chart, and the Natal chart.

Here, the effect of Mangal Dosha can be very high.

It can also be a higher Mangal Dosha when Mars is in the 7th and the 8th houses. Dosha on the Venus and Moon chart is stronger than when it is in the Natal chart.

When it comes to Low Mangal Dosha, Mars is present in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth, or twelfth houses of any three charts.

It could be the Natal, Moon, or Venus chart.

You can have a Low Mangal Dosha when Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 12th houses.

These are the two main types of Mangal Dosha that can affect a person.

Effects of Mangal Dosha:

Mangal Dosha can have different effects based on the house in which Mars is present.

If Mars is present in more than one house, then its impact can be more.

Here, we will look at the effects caused by the presence of Mars in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth, and twelfth houses.

1. Mars in the first house can affect the spouse of the person with Mangal Dosha.

It can lead to conflicts and violence in their marital life.

2.  Mars in the second house can result in problems in the family.

It can also cause turbulence and disturbance in your professional life.

3. Mars in the fourth house can have an adverse effect on a person’s career.

He or she might have to shift from one job to another due to different problems.

Financial issues are yet another crisis for a person with Mars in his or her Kundalini.

4. Mars in the seventh house can cause shortness of temper, and the person could be aggressive.

He or she would also have fights with their parents and loved ones.

5. Mars in the eight house can make a person lazy, reckless, and find it hard to handle finances.

There are high chances for him or her to lose his or her parental properties.

6. Mars in the twelfth house can lead to several enemies, who would work against the Mangalik.

He or she could confront psychological problems.

These are some effects associated with Mangal Dosha.

Its intensity can vary based on different factors. However, the most predominant factor is the remedial measures taken by the individual.

Remedies for Mangal Dosha:

  1. In some places, people conduct mock marriages, where a Mangalik marries an animal, inanimate object, or a tree.

They also conduct the ceremony with the Peepal tree or Banyan tree.

When a Mangalik person marries a clay pot, this type of marriage is known as Kumbh Vivah.

Here, the side effects of Mangal Dosha falls on the mock spouse and not on his or her real spouse.

2. You can resolve the issue when a Mangalik marries another Mangalik.

Here, the effects get canceled.

3. You can overcome the issue by worshiping Lord Hanuman and by visiting Lord Hanuman’s temple on Tuesdays.

You can offer vermilion to the deity.

You can also recite Hanuman Chalisa daily.

4. You can worship the banyan tree and make offerings of milk as well as sweets.

You can also feed birds as a remedial measure.

5. Donating blood can also be highly helpful.

6. You can perform special pujas and engage in charities.

7. You can fast on Tuesdays and only have Toor Daal during the course of the day.

8. Chanting Gayathri Mantra 108 times a day can also be helpful.

These are some remedies associated with Mangal Dosha.

Mangal Dosha, thus, can harm marriages and could lead to financial problems.

It is always best to perform remedies to overcome these effects associated with Mangal Dosha.

What is Mangal Dosha?

Even if you are least familiar with Vedic and Hindu astrology, you must have heard of Mangal Dosha, especially in context of marriages.

This is the foremost parameter in a Hindu marriage and often the most dreaded one.

Mangal refers to Mars, the fiery planet which represents aggression, heightened passion and ambition.

Mars’ placement in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th houses is considered negative for a marriage, which is why it is referred to as a ‘dosha’.

First house refers to self, second house represents immediate family, fourth house stands for domestic comforts and happiness, 7th house is for the partner, 8th house refers to deaths & longevity, and twelfth house stands for bed comforts.

Since our married life revolves primarily around these houses, the placement of destructive planet like Mars is considered unfavorable.

The person who is under the malefic impact of Mangal Dosha is called Manglik.

Since it’s fiery malefic planet, it often destroys the happiness associated with the houses mentioned above.

Sometimes, it also leads to widowhood, which is why Manglik Dosha is dreaded by the believers of Vedic astrology.

These are 6 houses so anyways there is a big possibility that 50-60% people turn out to be Mangliks.

This dosha is not as dreadful as it has been popularized as.

As per the principles of Vedic Astrology, when a Manglik person marries a Manglik person, the negative effects get neutralized.

In fact, there are several other positions of planets in a horoscope that deem it cancelled.

Now Mangal Dosha is calculated in three ways.

It is seen from Ascendant, Moon and most importantly Venus.

Ascendant is your rising sign, Moon sign is held very important in Vedic astrology because it relates to mind and emotions and Venus because it is the indicator of love.

For example, Venus is placed in your 4th house, and if Mars is be placed in your 4th, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, or 3rd house (1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th from where Venus is positioned), you will be considered a Manglik.

Same logic applies to Moon as well.

Mangal Dosha from seen from Ascendant is weak, from Moon is strong and from Venus, it is the strongest.

Mars is inimical towards Venus.

Mars is a fiery masculine planet while Venus is watery feminine energy.

Mars is aggression and action while Venus is love and beauty.

Venus denotes partner so bad placement of Mars causes negative influence on the partner so it is important to calculate Mangal Dosha from Venus too.

Performing the puja helps to alleviate the dosha to a certain extend and brings in beneficial results.

Major Manglik Dosha

Manglik dosh can be extremely harmful and can even have fatal consequences for a marriage.

If someone with Manglik dosh marries another with the same dosh, it is bound to have an impact on their lives.

The only solution to this problem is “Mangal (Manglik) dosh nivaran puja,” which is the sole method available to rectify this dosh.

This puja may even bring success to both the bride and the groom, even if only one of them has major Manglik dosh.

There are several instances of major Manglik dosh, including significant relationship issues after the wedding, loss of the husband or wife, serious mishaps, and serious illnesses.

Ganesha explains the importance and effects of Mangal Dosha

The placement of ‘Mangal’ (Mars) in the horoscope is the main parameter for consideration of ‘Manglik dosha’.

A person can be considered ‘Manglik’ if Mars is placed in his horoscope in the ‘Lagna’ (Ascendant), the Fourth House, the Seventh House, the Eighth House or the Twelfth House.

Some astrologers and astrological texts consider the Second House also for judging ‘Manglik dosha’.

There may be reasons why these Houses have been given importance in match-making.

The ‘Lagna’ represents the self.

The placement of Mars in the ‘Lagna’ may make a person aggressive and violent.

The Second House represents ‘Kutumb’ (immediate family).

Placement of Mars in the Second House may cause problems in adjustment with the family.

The Fourth House is the House of comforts.

Placement of Mars in the Fourth House can mar family comforts.

The Seventh House is the House of marriage and the placement of Mars in the Seventh House may create misunderstandings in marital life.

The Eighth House is the House of ‘Ayu’ (longevity) and also the ‘Suhaag Bhava’ (House indicating longevity of marriage).

Hence, placement of Mars in this House indicates danger to self as well as spouse.

The Twelfth House is the House of marital happiness and placement of Mars in this House is also not considered good.

The counting of Houses should be done from the ‘Lagna’, the Moon and the Venus.

With so many Houses and parameters involved, it becomes hard to find a horoscope without a ‘Manglik dosha’.

However, in case where ‘Manglik dosha’ is severe i.e., when Mars is heavily afflicted with no benefic associations or aspect, ‘Manglik dosha’ can cause problems in marital life.

For elaborating ‘Manglik dosha’, we have taken reference from ‘Jatak Bharnam’ which happens to be a trusted astrology classic dealing in Vedic astrology.

We have translated some of the verses of this book dealing with the effects of placement of Mars in the ‘Lagna’, the Second House, the Fourth House, the Seventh House, the Eighth House and the Twelfth House.

a) If Mars is placed in the ‘Lagna’, the native may be prone to mental illusions, may have a diseased body, may be courageous but violent and may travel far and wide.

b) If Mars is placed in the Second House, the native may be poor and may befriend evil-minded people.

He may be devoid of wisdom, merciless and inimical to kith and kin.

c) If Mars is placed in the Fourth House, the native may have problems from friends, vehicles, fear of fall from vehicles, prone to diseases and general weakness.

d) If Mars is placed in the Seventh House, it may cause several types of sufferings.

The native may have problems from enemies, unnecessary worries, body weakness and sorrows produced by attraction to opposite sex.

e) If Mars is placed in the Eighth House, the native may suffer from eye disease, bad luck, problems due to blood-related diseases and inclination for mean works.

It may also cause general dullness of mind and make the person critical of holy people.

f) If Mars is placed in the Twelfth House, the native may have enmity with friends, eye disease and a restless body.

He may indulge in unwise expenses of wealth, may lose self-esteem and suffer from bondage.

People often quote the following verse showing the veracity of the ‘Manglik dosha’.
“Lagne vyaye cha patale jamitre chaasthame kuje,
kanya bhartri vinashaaya bharta kanya vinaashaka”

Meaning: If Mars is in the ‘Lagna’Fourth HouseSeventh HouseEighth House or the Twelfth House of the horoscope, the spouse can be a cause of death.

Can Mars alone cause such tragedies in marital life?

Normally, it has been observed that if Mars is without any malefic association or aspect, it may not cause havoc in marriage.

Therefore, the verse cited above cannot be followed blindly.

Sometimes, divorce or separation may also result from ‘Manglik dosha’, if the afflictions are severe.

Cancellation of ‘Manglik dosha’

There are some situations in which ‘Manglik dosha’ gets cancelled.

  1. If there are similar afflictions in the horoscopes of the boy and the girl, the ‘Manglik dosha’ gets cancelled.

b) If one of them has Mars in the ‘Lagna’, Second, Fourth, Seventh, Eighth or the Twelfth House and the other has Saturn or ‘Rahu / Ketu’ in the ‘Lagna’, Second, Fourth, Seventh, Eighth or the Twelfth House, then too, the defects get cancelled.

Reduction in ‘Manglik dosha’
In some cases the effects of ‘Manglik dosha’ get diluted considerably if other parameters of the horoscope are matching.

Marriage may be recommended on account of such dilutions also.

a) Benefic planets in ‘Kendra’ (quadrant) and ‘Trikona’ (trines) increase the happiness in marital life.
b) Malefic planets in Third, Sixth and the Eleventh House make the horoscope strong. This helps in checking the negative factors with respect to marriage.
c) If Mars is placed in its own House, it generally does not cause any adverse effect to it. Hence, if Mars is placed in Aries or Scorpio and placed in the ‘Manglik’ position as described earlier, it may not be harmful.
d) Aspect of Jupiter on Mars or placement of Jupiter with Mars is said to reduce the ‘Manglik dosha’.
e) Mars placed in conjunction with Saturn or ‘Rahu/Ketu’ is said to reduce the ‘Manglik dosha’. However, this is debatable, as malefic associations may multiply the problems.

What is Manglik Dosha or Kuja Dosha

In Vedic astrology, there are few controversial things which are often exaggerated, distorted and misrepresented with regard to its adverse effects on the native.

Manglik Dosha is one of them.

The Manglik dogma is so prevalent that matrimonial newspaper classifieds actually have separate column for boys and girls with Manglik dosha.

Even online matrimonial sites are offering special section for Mangliks.

Manglik Dosha or Kuja Dosha is considered one of the most dreaded ones in Hindu marriages.

A person who is a Manglik simply means that Mars is present in the birth chart in particular houses.

When Mars is located at the 1,4,7,8,12th house from the ascendant (Lagna), Chandra Lagna (moon sign) in Lagna Kundali, Chandra Kundali or Navmansha Kundali the Manglik Dosha or Kuja Dosha is formed.

The Manglik Dosha affects the native in matrimonial matters.

Mangliks are perceived to be courageous, strong, sharp, focused and disciplined.

It is believed that two Mangliks are better placed in terms of compatibility because of their similar natures and temperament.

Whist considering the marriage compatibility between a boy and girl, even if all other attributes match but there is a mismatch in the Manglik status, the marriage between them will be considered inappropriate.

It is believed that a Manglik should only marry another Manglik, the idea being that two negatives Manglik Doshas cancel each other out, creating a positive.

There are different views by scholars in astrology on determining if a person is Manglik or otherwise.

In south India Mars in the second house is also considered a Manglik.

Manglik dosha is called or Kuja Dosha, Bhom Dosha or Angaraka Dosha also.

Cancellation Of Manglik Dosha

  • When Benefic Jupiter or Venus is in the ascendant.

Mars in the eighth house of the female native will adversely affect the longevity of married life as the eighth house is Manglayasthan of the bride. From here Mars aspects second house which is regarded as the eighth house of her husband.
  • Mars in the twelfth house which is a house of intimacy depletes its significations and has an impact on the seventh house by its aspect. The twelfth house is sixth from the seventh house is the house of disease for the bride. Twelfth house is also the eighth from the fifth house of children, so Mars in twelfth will create havoc all around the family. The seventh house is the house of conjugal relations and Marital happiness which are spoiled by Mars if proper matching is not done before fixing the marriage.
  • Mars in the fourth house spoils the family happiness and consequently causes separation between husband and wife because from the fourth house it will aspect the seventh house. Apart from this, the position of Sun, Saturn and Rahu/Ketu in the 1/7 axis will have an impact on marital relations.

The red Planet Mars signifies fire, energy, self-esteem, respect, ego, anger, etc.

What happens when a person is born Manglik is that the person is too fiery, proud, angry, courageous, rebellious, short tempered and has a nature that is hard to adjust with that of the others.

It is quite understandable that such qualities in a person have the propensity to cause disturbances in any kind of partnership, particularly in marriage.

It is said that Mangal Dosha could be a terrible thing when it concerns marriage and it could lead to separation or  divorce.

It is also feared that Mangal Dosha could cause the untimely death of the spouse of the Manglik woman.

One of the founders of Vedic Astrology Sage Parashara  said that if a Manglik woman married a Manglik man, the ill effects of the Dosha are cancelled.

Astrologers and priests prescribe expensive Poojas and remedies for which the parents of the bride to be, generously pay.

In today’s modern world, well educated and ‘emancipated’ young people brush the concept  of Mangal Dosha away and go ahead with their marriage breaking the Manglik  law.

Many a non-Manglik  young man, goes against the wishes of his parents and does marry a Manglik woman.

As time goes by, they do get accepted by the man’s parents and they start living together as a  joint family. Now comes the problem.

Even the slightest argument or quarrel between the young couple is taken very seriously by the mother of the young man and she accuses the poor young woman of being a cantankerous and an obnoxious daughter-in-law as she is Manglik.

The mother even threatens the poor young woman that she would get her son married to another woman who is a non-Manglik! However some ‘good’  mothers-in-law condescend to find a ‘solution’ by consulting astrologers and priests who in turn suggest them Poojas, Yantras, Mantras, Vraths  and what not.

Mars, as I said earlier, signifies fire, courage, vitality and confidence which when left underutilised, may turn into aggression.

Some hundreds of years ago in India, when families were totally patriarchal, they certainly did not prefer a daughter-in-law who would ask too many questions or challenge the men and the senior women of the family.

They wished for a modest, docile and a submissive daughter-in-law who would not only be the wife of the son of the family, but would also work hard and complete the daily chores as per the instructions of the senior women of the family.

Now Vedic Astrology is an ancient science and it says that people with Mars in one of those six houses on the chart would possess strong rebellious qualities which may border on disobedience.

Well, there we go! This was the reason (I presume) why non-Manglik girls were preferred to the Manglik ones!

Unlike in Western countries, the culture of parents ‘arranging’ the marriage of their sons and daughters is widely prevalent in India and in a few other  neighbouring countries.

In such cases young people marry someone that they have never met before let alone having a previous impression of that person’s nature , qualities or behavioural patterns.

This is exactly where matching of horoscopes as per Vedic Astrology comes of great use.

As a person researching Vedic Astrology,  I can say with certitude that there has hardly been any chart that I read wrong.

My general analyses of natal charts were always 75-100% correct.

Therefore, I believe that in order to avoid imbalance in the relationship, it would make sense to match horoscopes before deciding on the wedding of two people that have never met each other before.

Should a Manglik incompatibility exist in the chart of a prospective bride, groom or both, and if the two be confident of their love for each other, they should consider discussing openly and settling differences that could be present between them.

We are in the 21st century and I find it hard to believe that 50% of  the population of women in the world would either ruin their marriage or lose their husband  just because they are Mangliks!

It would be wise if married couples with differences sat down and discussed each other’s potential and discovered ways to harness all the energy that each one, particularly the Manglik one had.

Anger in a person is a strong sign of their ego and ego is one of the prime negative factors that prevents spiritual growth and Karmic evolution. Anger increases the distance between a person and divinity.

From the Karmic point of view, a person is a Manglik because of his or her past Karma. Through Vedic Astrology, we can easily get a fair idea about our past Karma which can further help us on working on balancing our Karmic equation.

The past is gone but the future belongs to us and it lies in our hands.

We can shape our future simply by adding more positive Karma to our Karmic account.

More positive Karma means less  negative past Karma.

felt its presence on their charts when their parents start looking  for a bridegroom.  “Sorry, we are looking for a non-Manglik girl”, is what the parents of the girl hear from families of prospective bridegrooms.

While placing an advertisement in matrimonial columns, the parents of the bride to be, had rather ensure that they mention the Mangal  Dosha or else they could be accused of ‘concealing vital facts’!
