Legend behind Shani Jayanti: As per mythology, Shani Dev is the son of Lord Surya and Goddess Chaaya (Chaaya means shadow).

Goddess Chaya is the shadow of Devi Saranyu, the daughter of King Daksha.

The legend explains that Devi Saranyu could not bear the scorching heat and brightness of Lord Surya and left him.

She went away for Sadhana and left her shadow Chaaya (who completely resembled her) to take her place.

Goddess Chaaya did not have any problem with the heat of God Sun due to her shadow form.

Lord Shani was born when Devi Chaaya was meditating upon Lord Shiva.

Born out of Chaaya’s (shadow form), Shani dev complexion was totally black at birth.

When Shani dev was born and His father Lord Surya doubted His birth, Lord Shiva appeared to support His devotee Chaaya and clarified to Lord Surya why Shani was black and blessed Shani Dev.

Since then, devotees started celebrating the birthday of Lord Shani as Shani Jayanti.

What is the story of this Jayanti?

According to Hindu texts, Shani Dev is the son of Lord Surya and Devi Chaaya, the shadow of Lord Surya’s wife, Devi Saranya. It is said that Devi Sarnyu could not bear the heat and brightness of Lord Surya and left him. She left for Penance and left her Shadow Chaaya to take her place. As Shani Dev was born at a time when Devi Chaaya was in severe penance and meditating on Lord Shiva, he was born dark. Lord Shani’s dark complexion made Lord Surya doubt Chaaya’s chastity and insult her.

It is said that once infuriate by Lord Surya’s insults, Lord Shani give him a cruel look that left him burn and his complexion blackened. At that time Lord Shiva healed Lord Surya and revealed the truth about the birth of Chaaya and Lord Shani. The Birth Story of Lord Shani:

According to the Kashi Khanda of Skanda Purana, Lord Shani is the son of Lord Surya (the Sun God). As per the legend, Lord Surya married Sanjna, the daughter of Prajapati. Sanjna had immense love for her husband but due to her ignorance, she always tried to diminish the intensity of his radiance, which symbolized fire. Over time, Sanjna gave birth to three children known as Vaivasvata Manu, Yamaraja, and Yami (or Yamuna). Despite having a family, Sanjna still desired to diminish the fiery nature of Lord Surya’s radiance. One day, she resolved to undergo austerities to reduce the intensity of Lord Surya’s fire. However, she was faced with the responsibility of taking care of her husband, performing her duties, and raising her children. In order to fulfill these obligations, Sanjna created a replica of herself through her penance, and the replica was named Sanvarna.

Mother Sanjna entrusted the responsibility of her children and the care of Lord Surya to her shadow replica, Sanvarna, saying, “Now, you take my place and fulfill the duty of serving Lord Surya, taking care of our children, and upholding the principles of womanhood. However, this secret should remain between you and me only.” Afterward, Sanjna reached her father’s house and explained Her distress. But Her father advised her to go back to Her husband and resolve the matter. Sanjna decided to go to the forest and engage in severe austerities. She assumed the form of a mare in the forest and began Her rigorous austerities.

Meanwhile, Lord Surya was unaware that Sanjna was no longer with Him, but Her shadow replica, Sanvarna, remained in Her place. While upholding Her marital duties, Sanvarna became pregnant and gave birth to three children named Manu, Shani Dev, and Bhadra. In this way, Lord Shani was born as the second offspring of Lord Surya and Sanvarna, the shadow replica.

Shani is recognized as the offspring of Surya, the Sun God, and Chhaya. Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect of the universe, arranged the marriage of his daughter, Sangya, to Surya.

Surya, being an embodiment of radiance and power, was seen as the perfect match for Sangya. The couple was blessed with three children, namely Manu, Yama, and Yamuna. However, Sangya, being of a delicate nature, found it challenging to bear the intense luminosity and heat emanating from her husband, Surya.

In order to resolve this predicament, Sangya formed a likeness of herself from her shadow, referred to as Chhaya, and instructed her to assume Sangya’s role as Surya’s spouse. Meanwhile, Sangya retreated to Uttarakusha Mountain to engage in deep meditation.

The substitute Sangya, Chhaya, was an impeccable doppelganger possessing all the attributes of the original, which led Surya to remain oblivious to the substitution. In due time, Chhaya gave birth to a child whose complexion was distinctively dark – the planet Saturn, known as Shani.

The deviation in complexion from his other children led Surya to question the paternity of Shani and he refused to acknowledge Shani as his own. In the face of Surya’s disbelief, a distraught Chhaya confessed that she was not his true wife but merely a shadow of Sangya.

Following this revelation, Lord Surya’s attitude towards both Chhaya and Shani turned apathetic. This neglect from his father contributed to Shani’s evolution into a being known for his stern and unyielding nature since his early years.

Katha:

Once there lived a Brahmin who saw a person dressed in blue and riding a blue horse, in his dream. He had the same dream for many nights, and due to this, he was frightened and was not able to eat properly. He became weaker day by day. His wife asked him about the reason for his fear. He told her about the dream, and his wife immediately guessed that it was none other than Shani Dev. She suggested to him that whenever he sees the dream again, he should ask the blue man to follow him for sava pahar and not sade sati. Brahmin did exactly the same. When he woke up the next day, he told his wife that he was affected by the sava pahar effect of Shani Dev, and that he should move to the jungle for some time. He told his wife to be at peace and lead a simple life, while he is gone. He went to the jungle and started reciting Hanuman chalisa under a Peepal tree. One pahar passed by. Now he decided to move ahead in the jungle. He suddenly came across a man carrying a bunch of watermelons. He purchased a watermelon and moved further into the jungle. He then came across a man who was actually Shani Dev. Shani Dev asked the brahmin about what was inside his bag. Brahmin said watermelon, but to his surprise, when he opened the bag, he saw the head of the son of the king. The Brahmin was taken to the king’s palace and was ordered to be hanged till death. When the king asked him for his last wish, the brahmin said that he wanted to hear Balaji Katha. A brahmin was called to orate the katha to him, and by the time the katha was finished, he completed sava pahar dasha. Suddenly the king’s son returned from the jungle, and the king ordered the brahmin to set the brahmin free. Brahmin told the king about the Shani dasha, and solutions to get rid of these dashas. Brahmin went to his home and finally cut the watermelon and to his surprise, he found that the seeds of watermelon turned into precious gems, with the declining effect of Shani Dasha.

Shani Jayanti is the day when Lord Shani, son of Suryadev took birth. His birth anniversary is on Amavasya tithi of the Vaisakh month. Lord Shani rules the planet Saturn and has strong influence on everyone’s life as per astrology. Hindus from all communities worship Lord Shani to avoid malefic influence of the God, in their horoscope. Especially devotees who have sade sathi or Saturn cycle in their life fast and pray on this day to Lord Shani.

About Lord Shani

Sandhya could not bear the radiance of Sun for long and decided to go, leaving her shadow (chaya) behind in service of Lord Sun. After some time Chaya gave birth to Saturn.

It is believed that donation, charity, puja, path etc made on Shani Jayanti gives relief from all sufferings caused by malefic Saturn. The observer should wake up early in the morning, take bath, greet all the nine planets and establish an idol of Lord Shani made of iron. Bathe the idol with mustard oil, sesame seeds and chant below given shani mantra:

After doing puja as per the rituals donate saturn related articles such as black cloth, black urad, black shoes. sesame, iron, mustard oil etc. along with things used in puja.
The person observing fast should not eat food and chant shani mantra throughout the day.

Sesame, black pepper, peanut oil, pickle, clove, basil leaf and black salt must be used in the puja. Worshipping Lord Hanuman also pleases Lord Shani.
