Varuthini Ekadashi

ॐ Hindu Of Universe ॐ

“God’s light is within you, It never leaves you.”

Time – Varuthini Ekadashi is observed during Krishna Paksha of Vaishakha month according to North Indian Purnimant calendar and Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month according to South Indian Amavasyant calendar. However both North Indian and South Indian observe it on the same day. Currently it falls in month of March or April in English calendar.

Parana means breaking the fast. Ekadashi Parana is done after sunrise on next day of Ekadashi fast. It is necessary to do Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise. Not doing Parana within Dwadashi is similar to an offence.

Parana should not be done during Hari Vasara. One should wait for Hari Vasara to get over before breaking the fast. Hari Vasara is first one fourth duration of Dwadashi Tithi. The most preferred time to break the fast is Pratahkal. One should avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna. If due to some reasons one is not able to break the fast during Pratahkal then one should do it after Madhyahna.

At times Ekadashi fasting is suggested on two consecutive days. It is advised that Smartha with family should observe fasting on first day only. The alternate Ekadashi fasting, which is the second one, is suggested for Sanyasis, widows and for those who want Moksha. When alternate Ekadashi fasting is suggested for Smartha it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day.

Ekadashi fasting on both days is suggested for staunch devotees who seek for love and affection of Lord Vishnu.

Varuthini Ekadashi

The Hindi word ‘varuthini’ translates to ‘protected or armored.’ It is believed that a person who observes the Varuthini Ekadashi vrat will be conferred with good fortune and wealth, and be protected from all evil. As the belief goes, an individual who religiously observes Varuthini Ekadashi every year will gain name, fame and prosperity.

Significance of Varuthini Ekadashi:

In the Padma Purana Uttara Khanda, Lord Krishna describes about Varuthini Ekadashi to King Yudhishthira in all its glory. He described how anyone who piously observed the Varuthini Ekadashi conferred good fortune and prosperity. The observance of the Varuthini Ekadashi vow posed a shield against all evil, and it gave its devotees pleasure and salvation.

An unfortunate woman, a deluded man, or a King who hold utmost faith in the vow of Varuthini would gain material pleasures as well as liberation. Any living being would be liberated from the cycle of birth, life and death, i.e., unchain them from rebirth. The Varuthini vow weeds out all sins of devotees. King Mandhatr and King Dhundhumara secured their place in heaven only due to the Varuthini vow. According to another legend from Padma Puran, Lord Krishna tells King Yudhishthira how Lord Shiva himself observed the Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat to free himself from the sin of beheading the fifth head of Lord Brahma, thereby doing Brahma Hatya (Killing a Brahmin).

Varuthini Ekadashi destroys even the greatest of sins and grants blessings as great the auspicious offerings to a deity. It gives one pleasures and blessings greater than giving of land, greater than giving of gold, greater than giving of food, or even greater than ‘Kanyadaan,’ giving of one’s daughter in marriage. Kanyadaan is considered to be the biggest ‘daan,’ and the significance of Varuthini Ekadashi is equivalent to giving 100 Kanyadaan. Lord Krishna also said that devotedly observing the vow of Varuthini Ekadashi would be given an ‘undecaying position in the end.’ Therefore, those who are conscious and afraid of the sin they have committed must observe the Varuthini vow with all effort.

The greatness of Varuthini Ekadashi is mentioned in the ‘Bhavishya Purana’ in the form of conversation between Dharam Raja Yudhisthira and Lord Shri Krushna. The observer of the vrat will be freed from all the sins and also get freedom from the continuous cycle of re-birth. Furthermore in Hindu mythology, ‘Kanyadaan’ (giving away daughters) is considered to be the biggest ‘daan’ and the significance of Varuthini Ekadashi is equivalent to giving 100 ‘Kanyadaan’. Story of Varuthini Ekadasi

Lord Shiva was cursed for beheading Lord Brahma of his fifth head. It is believed that Lord Shiva was freed from this sin by observing fast on Varuthini Ekadasi. Kings Mandata and Dhundhumaar attained salvation by observing fast on Varuthini Ekadasi.

Significance of Varuthini Ekadasi

Lord Krishna highlights the significance of Varuthini Ekadasi to King Yudhishthira in the Bhavishya Purana. The day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in North and South India. This Ekadasi Vrat is believed to turn a lame person to walk normally, bring fortune to an unlucky woman, and relieve animals from the cycle of birth and death.

Rituals of Varuthini Ekadasi Vrat

Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day in the form of Vamana. Strict fasting is observed by devotees of Lord Vishnu from dawn to dawn of Ekadasi to Dwadasi (12th Moon). Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat – For Good Fortune and Prosperity

Varuthini Ekadashi: Vrat that protects you from everything bad

The 11th tithi of a lunar phase is known as Ekadashi. Hindus, particularly Vaishnavites, regard it as sacred. On this day, Lord Vishnu is honoured. Devotees observe special pujas and vrat on this day. The Shukla Paksha Ekadashi and the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi are the two Ekadashis that occur each month. In a year, there are 24 Ekadashis. The Ekadashi that falls on the Krishna Paksha of the Vaisakha month is known as Varuthini Ekadashi.

What is Varuthini Ekadashi?

According to the North Indian Purnimant calendar, Varuthini also known as Baruthini Ekadashi is the Ekadashi (11th tithi) that occurs on the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) of the Vaisakha month. On the other hand, Varuthini Ekadashi, which falls on the Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month, is the Ekadashi in the South Indian Amavasyant calendar. A month in the Purnimant calendar begins the day after the full moon and ends the day after the full moon. According to the Amavasyant calendar, the month begins on the day following the new moon and concludes on the day of the new moon. It is a sacred day for Hindus and is devoted to Lord Vishnu, particularly to his fifth avatar, Vamana. On this day, devotees perform pujas, vrat, and give alms.

The word “Varuthini” implies “protected.” The devotees who observe Varuthini Ekadashi are blessed with a spiritual shield that will guard them from all that is hurtful and bad. It is thought that by keeping vrat on this day and worshipping Vamana, the devotees will be blessed with good health, fortune, prosperity, pleasure, and fame, among other blessings. On this day, one who worships the Lord by remaining awake at night can atone for their sins and achieve moksha.

For the Vaishnava sects, ekadashis are particularly revered. Varuthini Ekadashi, according to the Vaishnava calendar, occurs on the Krishna Paksha of the Madhusudana month. Similar to the Purnimant calendar, the Vaishnava calendar begins a month on the day following a full moon and runs through the following full moon. The Baruthini Ekadashi is another name for the Vaishnava Varuthini Ekadashi. On this day, Lord Vamana is revered.

Vamana was Lord Vishnu’s fifth and first human incarnation. He is occasionally referred to as the dwarf Avatar. Given that their mothers were the same, Indra, the ruler of the Devas, and Vamana are siblings. Vamana defeated the powerful Emperor Bali by begging for charity rather than using any weapons. The moral of the Vaman and Bali narrative is that you are given complete safety after you renounce yourself and your ego at the feet of Lord Vishnu, the supreme lord. The idea behind observing Varuthini Ekadashi is similar to this. Varuthini Ekadashi Rituals

Certain rules are prescribed for observing Varuthini Ekadashi. One should observe a fast with an all-night vigil, praying and singing hymns. The Varuthini Ekadashi vrat may start on Dashami (10th lunar day), the day before the Ekadashi. On the day of Varuthini Ekadashi, the devotees should wake up early, take a holy bath and worship Lord Vishnu. It is an occasion meant for spiritual attainment, and so, the day should be spent chanting prayers or singing bhajans.

Full fasting without consuming any food or water is recommended for Varuthini Ekadashi vrat. Those who can’t afford this can observe a partial vrat by consuming fruits, nuts and water. The Varuthini Ekadashi vrat must only be broken the next day after offering prayers to Lord Vishnu.

The worship of Lord Vishnu or his avatar Vamana is an important Varuthini Ekadashi ritual. One can do this at home using lamps, incense sticks, Tulsi leaves, flowers, sandal paste etc. If possible, those who observe vrat must visit the temples of Lord Vishnu and stay awake, reciting mantras and reading scriptures. One may choose to read Satyanarayana katha, Vishnu Sahasranama or Bhagavad Gita chapters.

Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat

It is advised that followers of the Varuthini Ekadashi vrat fast from dawn on Ekadashi to dawn on Dwadashi. Although a full fast is advised, one can begin fasting at sunset the day before to make sure that no undigested food is still present in the stomach. Varuthini Ekadashi vrat involves more than merely giving up food. Gambling, lying, criticising others, violence, athletics, and sexual activity are all forbidden. The devout person on vrat shouldn’t give in to sleep, rage, or greed. Consequently, vrat purifies the mind, body, and soul by overcoming temptations and sensations. Varuthini Ekadashi also forbids certain practices like shaving and applying oil on one’s body.

The next day (Dwadashi), after sunrise, is appropriate to perform parana, or breaking the fast. In the event that Dwadashi does not end before sunrise, Parana must be performed the following day. Also, it is advised to avoid doing Parana in the first Dwadashi tithi quarter, which is the Hari Vasara time. While it is not advised to break the fast in Madhyahna, Pratahkal is thought to be the most fortunate moment to do so. A person should perform Parana after Madhyahna if they were unable to do it in Pratahkal.

Two types of Ekadashi Vrats are recommended; one for Smarthas, those with family, and the other for Sanyasis and Moksha seekers. While a one-day fast is recommended for Smarthas or normal devotees, alternate fasting or a two-day fast is suggested for Sanyasis and Moksha seekers.

Fasting

Although complete fasting on Varuthini Ekadashi is advised, people who are unable to do so owing to health reasons can observe a partial fast by only eating once, at midday or in the evening. In that situation, a devotee should refrain from eating or drinking anything that is not vegetarian, including meat, fish, eggs, grains, onions, peas, beans, black gram, spinach, betel nuts, paan, red lentils, honey, sesame seeds, mustard, asafoetida, cloves, fennel, cardamom, nutmeg, tulsi, tamarind, custard, salt, baking soda and baking powder.

Eating in bell metal utensils and eating from other houses are also prohibited. The devotee can choose to eat the Havishyanna food offered to Yajna on the previous day. It is said that even those who are not observing the vrat should avoid consuming grains, pulses, and non-vegetarian foods on Ekadashi.

Varuthini Ekadashi Fasting Procedure

  • A complete fast is recommended. So, a devotee can start fasting from the previous day’s sunset to avoid any undigested food remaining in the stomach.
  • On Ekadashi day, the devotee should wake up before sunrise, take a bath and worship Lord Vishnu.
  • Visiting a Vishnu temple, chanting prayers, and reciting Vishnu Sahasranama or Bhagavad Gita will intensify the spiritual drive.
  • Breaking the fast or Parana should be done on the next day (Dwadasi) after taking a bath and worshipping Lord Vishnu. It should be done in the Parana time, which varies with each Dwadasi.
  • Parana or breaking the fast shouldn’t be done during Hari Vasara Period, the first quarter of Dwadashi.
  • The most auspicious time for Parana is Pratahkal. If the devotee couldn’t do it during Pratahkal, then he/she should do it after Madhyahna.

The legend associated with Varuthini Ekadashi

There is a story associated with Varuthini Ekadashi vrat told by Lord Krishna to Arjun. It’s the story of King Mandhata who ruled the banks of river Narmada. He was a generous and priestly king. Once on an occasion, when the King was meditating in the forest, a bear attacked him. It bit his feet and dragged him. The King, following the sacred rules of TapasyaDharm, didn’t respond and endured that ordeal, praying to Lord Vishnu. Eventually, Lord came to his rescue, but by then, the bear had chewed the King’s leg. The Lord advised the king to get back to Mathura, worship his Varaha Avatar and observe the Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat. The king who followed this advice devotedly became free from his past sins and got his injured leg back to normal.

What is the significance of Varuthini Ekadashi?

The significance of Varuthini Ekadashi is narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishtira in the Bhavishya Purana. He says that this Ekadashi can turn the unfortunate into the fortunate and release a soul from the cycle of birth and death. Observing this Ekadashi has helped the Ikshvaku King Dhundhumara to become free from the curse of Shiva and King Mandata to get enlightened. Also, according to various Hindu legends, observing fast on Varuthini Ekadashi is equivalent to one hundred Kanyadaans or donating gold at Kurukshetra on the day of a solar eclipse.

Thus, Varuthini Ekadashi is an important observance for Hindus, offering countless benefits. It is believed that one who observes Varuthini Ekadashi vrat will be protected from all the evils and bestowed with blessings from Lord Vamana. Also, it is supposed to bestow cures for illnesses and sufferings, fame, happiness, prosperity, material pleasure etc.

The ultimate power of Varuthini Ekadashi is granting of Moksha, freedom from the cycle of life and death. According to Hindu astrology, one who observes the vrat on this day will be freed from all sins and liberated from the cycle of re-birth.

About Varuthini Ekadashi

Varuthini Ekadashi is also popular as Baruthani Ekadashi. On the day of Varuthini Ekadashi, devotees worship and offer prayers to Lord Vamana who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. In the literal sense, Varuthini means ‘protected’ and thus there is a belief that the devotees get protected from various negativities and evils by observing Viruthini Ekadashi.

When is Varuthini Ekadashi?

As per the Hindu calendar, Varuthini Ekadashi takes places in Vishakha month during Krishna Paksha on Ekadashi (eleventh day). According to the Gregorian calendar, the day falls in the month of April or May.

What is the Significance of Varuthini Ekadashi?

The significance of observing Varuthini Ekadashi is mentioned in several Puranas and has also been narrated by Lord Krishna. It is believed that the devotees can change their bad luck and attain salvation by observing this Ekadashi with complete rituals and fast. The devotees also attain prosperity, abundance and good luck in their lives by keeping a fast of Varuthini Ekadashi. By performing various acts of donations and charities on this particular day, the devotees get blessed with the divine blessings of their ancestors and the deities.

  • The Vrat lasts for a period of 24 hours i.e. till the sunrise of the following Ekadashi day.
  • The fast concludes after donating food, clothes and other essentials to a Brahmin.
  • Devotees chant sacred mantras and recite songs in honor of the deity.
  • People also read ‘Vishnu Sahastranaam’ to get bestowed with the divine blessings of Lord Vishnu.
  • The devotees are required to listen to the Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat Story to accomplish their fast.

What is the Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat Katha (Story)?

According to Hindu mythology, the legend of the Varuthini Ekadashi states that once Lord Shiva was furious and he beheaded Lord Brahma’s fifth head. Subsequently, he was cursed but Lord Shiva got free from the curse and the sin after observing the fast and rituals of Varuthini Ekadashi. It is believed that the devotees get equivalent fruits by observing Varuthini Ekadashi as similar to a thousand years of penance.

Ekadashi Fasting Days

Apart from Varuthini Ekadashi, there are 23 Ekadashi Vrat in a year that fall on Krishna and Shukla Paksha of Hindu Calendar. All these Ekadashi tithi are very significant in Hindu traditions and are popular with various Ekadashi names. Here is the list of Ekadashi Vrat observed throughout the year.

Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Varuthini Ekadashi falls in the month of Vaisakh (April-May). It is also known as ‘Vaishakh Krishna Ekadashi.’ It is believed that whosoever observes a complete fast on this sacred day has his sins completely removed, obtains continuous happiness, and achieves all good fortune. Giving the daughter away as a daan on her wedding (kanyadaan) is termed as the most absolute daan a person can give to anyone in this world. However this varuthini ekadashi vrat gives a person similar fruits to a hundred kanyadaan.

Katha:

Once King Yudhisthira asked Shree Krishna – “Oh Madhusudan, Please describe to me the Ekadashi of the krishna paksha of the month of Vaisakha (April-May), including its name, specific merits and influence.”

Lord Shree Krishna replied, “Oh King, in this world and the next, the most auspicious and magnanimous Ekadashi is Varuthini Ekadashi, which occurs during the dark fortnight of the month of Vaisakha. Whosoever observes a complete fast on this sacred day has his sins completely removed, obtains continuous happiness, and achieves all good fortune”.

Fasting on Varuthini Ekadashi makes even an unfortunate woman fortunate. Upon anyone who observes it, this Ekadashi bestows material enjoyment in this life and liberation after the death of this present body. It destroys the sins of all and saves people from the miseries of repeated rebirth.

“By observing this Ekadashi properly, King Mandhata was liberated.” Whatever merit one obtains by performing austerities and penances for ten thousand years is achieved by a person who observes Varuthini Ekadashi.”

The merit one achieves by donating a great amount of gold during a solar eclipse at Kurukshetra is gained by one who observes this one Ekadashi with love and devotion, and certainly attains his goals in this life and the next. In short, this Ekadashi is pure and very enlivening and the destroyer of all sins.

“Better than giving horses in charity is giving elephants, and better than giving elephants is giving land. But better still than giving land is the giving of sesame seeds, and better than that is giving of gold. Still better than giving gold is giving food grains – for all the forefathers, demigods (devtas), and human beings become satisfied by eating grains. Thus there is no better gift of charity than this in the past, present or future.”

“Yet learned scholars have declared that giving away a young maiden in marriage to a worthy person is equal to giving away food grains in charity. Moreover, giving cows in charity is equal to giving food grains. Still better than all these charities is teaching spiritual knowledge to the ignorant. Yet all the merits one can attain by performing all these acts of charity are attained by one who fasts on the Varuthini Ekadashi.”

One who lives off the wealth of his daughters suffers a hellish condition until the inundation of the entire universe, therefore one should be especially careful not to use the wealth of his daughter. Oh best of kings, any householder who takes his daughter’s wealth out of greed, who tries to sell his daughter, or who takes money from the man to whom he has given his daughter in marriage, such a householder becomes a lowly cat in his next life. Therefore it is said that whoever, as a sacred act of charity, gives away in marriage a maiden i.e. does kanyadaan. That very same merit, however, can be easily achieved by one who fasts on the Varuthini Ekadashi.

The following things should be given up on the Dashami, (the tenth phase of the Moon), the day before the Ekadashi:

  1. eating on bell-metal plates,
  2.  eating any kind of urid-dahl,
  3. eating red-lentils,
  4. eating chick-peas,
  5. eating kondo (a grain that is primarily eaten by poor people and that resembles poppy seeds or agarpanthas seeds),
  6. eating honey,
  7. eating in another person’s house/home,
  8. eating more than once,
  9. eating Channa and
  10. participating in sex of any kind.

On the Ekadashi itself one should give up the following: gambling, sports, sleeping during the daytime, betal nuts and its leaf, brushing one’s teeth, spreading rumours, faultfinding, talking to the spiritually fallen, anger, and lying.

On the Dwadashi the day after Ekadashi (the twelfth phase of the Moon), one should give up the following: eating on bell-metal plates, eating urad-daal, red-lentils, or honey, lying, strenuous exercise or labor, eating more than once, any sexual activity, shaving the body, face or head, smearing oils on one’s body, and eating in another’s home.

Lord Sri Krishna continued, “Whoever observes the Varuthini Ekadashi in this way becomes free from all sinful reactions and returns to the eternal, spiritual abode. One who worships Lord Madhusudan (Krishna) on this Ekadashi by staying awake throughout the entire night, also becomes free from all his previous sins and attains to the spiritual abode. Therefore, Oh king, he who is frightened of his accumulated sins and their attendant reactions, and thus of death itself, must observe Varuthini Ekadashi by fasting very strictly.”

“Finally, he who hears or reads this glorification of the sacred Varuthini Ekadashi obtains the merit earned by donating one thousand cows in charity, and at last attains heaven.”

Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat Katha
