What is a chakra?

Aside from the physical body, we also have a subtle, energetic body.

Within it are pathways that flow with prana or life-force, and these converge at powerful energy centers, known as chakras.

The seven primary chakras flow from the root (base of the spine) up to the crown chakra (top of the head).

Each chakra, or nerve center, is associated with particular qualities and emotions which transpire in different ways.

For the sixth chakra, these are awareness, alertness, and anger.

When the energy in your chakra system is moving upwards (from the base chakra up to the crown chakra) you experience the positive qualities of the chakras.

Conversely, when the energy is moving downwards (from the crown to the base) you will experience the inverse, the negative qualities of that chakra. 

There is a lot of talk about blocked chakras and chakra healing without mentioning this flow of energy within your energy body.

Instead, many focus on specific yoga postures, mantras, expensive crystals, or essential oils to facilitate the healing process.

But it is not all that complicated.

In this article, we will explore some simple ways to bring harmony and balance.

When the energy is flowing in an upward direction, i.e. the chakra is in balance, you are more mindful, aware, and alert.

When your third eye chakra is working well you feel full of alertness, clarity, and intuition.

Time for some yoga! Yoga poses are great for healing your third eye and awakening your spiritual awareness.

A holistic yoga practice, that is one including skillfully sequenced asana, pranayama, and meditation, will help to get your energy flowing upwards through your third-eye chakra (and every other chakra too!).

The second of the three spiritual chakras is the third eye chakra, the indigo energy center that governs your intuition.

Unlike a belief, which is learned, your intuition is a deep knowing beyond what you can physically see or touch.

It’s the ability to know something without analytic reasoning.

Amanda Baker, founder of the wellness brand Rum & Quartz, explains it perfectly: “

I was leaving an interview once and I wasn’t sure if it had gone well.

Then I saw the number 222 walking out of the building and I knew that meant everything was in alignment.

“When you meditate, it’s like tuning a radio. Now you can hear the important messages, instead of all the noise.”

By focusing your awareness on the breath and sensations in your body, you actually build trust with your body and harmony between your mind, body, and spirit.

When you’re in touch with how you feel in a neutral state, it’s easier to identify when your spirit is experiencing positive or negative sensations as a gut feeling.

2. Start noticing all that you can with your five senses.

Your senses allow you to experience and engage with the world.

Take in as much information as you can with them.

Be observant.

Listen closely.

Follow your nose. Savor the flavor.

And feel deeply.

Tuning into your five senses can raise your sensitivity to your sixth sense.

3. Pay attention to your dreams.

“Dreams are magical,” Baker says. “If you really take the time to focus and not disregard them, they can reveal very helpful information.

Dream interpretation can lead to clearer understanding of what’s happening inside of you, your goals, and even your fears.”

 For example, water in dreams represents emotions, so diving into the ocean has a different meaning than throwing a cup of water at a friend.

If you can remember your dream when you wake up, try scribbling it down and interpreting what it might mean.

There may be a hidden message in there for you.

4. Test your hunches.

If you have a feeling that something is true or something is going to happen, write it down and see if you’re right.

If you’re wrong, you can unpack why you came to that conclusion (for example, if you thought it would rain but it doesn’t, maybe that’s a sign that you feel gloomy).

If you are right, evaluate what factors and feelings helped you come to that decision.

5. Escape from your daily routine.

“I love my routine, but I also know how good it is to switch things up,” Baker shares. “Trying something new unlocks parts of yourself you didn’t know existed.”

When you’re overly busy or stuck in a routine, it can be hard to hear the quiet voice of your intuition.

Take some time to relax and see if your intuition pops up.

You’ll know because a thought will sound like talking in your brain, whereas your intuition will show up as a feeling in your chest or stomach, or a flash between the eyebrows.

6. Spend time in nature.

Being in the natural world and away from technology and the hustle and bustle of everyday life can help you tap into your intuition.

You can use your senses to get in touch with your surroundings, follow what feels good  like choosing the sunny path over a bushy trail  and open up to the intuition that our ancestors relied on to find food and escape predators.

7. Learn from the past.

Think back to a time when something bad happened to you.

Before this thing happened, did you get any feelings that urged you to steer clear?

Were there a series of negative experiences leading up to this moment?

Did a negative feeling come to you in a dream?

 Try to remember how you felt and recall as many details as possible.

This will help you listen to your intuition the next time these feelings come up.

8. Feel more, think less.

Baker will admit, she struggles with this: “As an overthinker, this has been the hardest task for me.

I ask myself how I’m feeling very often and that reminds me that I am feeling and experiencing so many amazing things.

I am not my thoughts.”

Put yourself in situations where you’re forced to feel more, like taking a dance class, watching a funny movie, or getting on a water ride.

By connecting more deeply to your feelings, you’ll be able to strengthen your spirit and give your mind a rest.

9. Align with your values.

Your mind may direct you away from your integrity, but your intuition never will.

Learn what it feels like when your behavior aligns with your values and you’ll be able to sense when you’re in alignment with your highest good.

When you’re betraying your values, you’ll feel it in your spirit, and you’ll know to stay away from that feeling  and those decisions.

10. Release your resistance.

“I tell myself all the time: ‘Don’t resist, just flow,’” Baker says.

“When you stop resisting, you’re able to manifest faster and remain open to abundance and opportunities.”

The universe can’t operate through you if you’re blocking yourself from feeling.

 If you have a plan for how you want your life to go, resonate with why and be open to what that can look like.

Chances are the universe will surprise you in a more fulfilling way.
