Mitra is also the guardian of the world along with Varuna. Together they look after the world and uphold the order. They make all the things happen in this world- from the river flowing to the rain falling. Mitra is associated with the morning light while Varuna is associated with the night sky.

In the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedic texts, Mitra is mostly indistinguishable from Varuna, together with whom Mitra forms a dvandva pair Mitra-Varuna, and in which Mitra-Varuna has essentially the same characteristics as Varuna alone. Varuna is not only the greater of the two, but also — according to RV 2.12 — the second-greatest of the RigVedic gods after Indra.

Mitra – Vedic God in Hindu Tradition
Mitra is a Vedic God mentioned in the Vedas but he is rarely worshipped today in Hinduism. He is one among the Adityas and is associated with friendship and solidarity. The name Mitra means a ‘devoted friend’ or ‘friendship.’ He is the son of Aditi. He represents the relationship between the living beings. Legend has it that Sage Vasishta and Agastya were born to Mitra and Varuna in Urvasi. Legend has it that Mitra and Varuna placed their semen in an urn before Urvasi. From the semen was born Sage Vasishta and Agastya – the men who defined code of behavior in ancient society.
According to Bhagavad Purana, Mitra also had sons in Revathi, who represents prosperity. The three sons were Utsarga, Arishta, and Pippala.

In Vedic literature, Mitra and Varuna are two dieties (Devas) who are portrayed as icons of intimate friendship between males.
Mitra-Varuna are referred to in the ancient Indian scripture of the Rigveda.They are both considered Ādityas, or deities connected with the Sun; and they are protectors who preside over the universal waters. They are depicted riding a shark or crocodile together. Sometimes they are portrayed seated side-by-side on a golden chariot drawn by seven swans.

Ancient Brahmana texts associate Mitra and Varuna with the two lunar phases and same-sex relations:
(Shatapatha Brahmana 2.4.4.19)

“Mitra and Varuna are the two half-moons: the waxing one is Varuna and the waning one is Mitra. During the new-moon night these two meet and when they are thus together, everyone is pleased.

On that same night, Mitra implants his seed in Varuna and when the moon later wanes, that waning is produced from his seed. ( Varuna is similarly said to implant his seed in Mitra on the full-moon night for the purpose of securing its future waxing. In Hinduism, the new- and full-moon nights are discouraged times for procreation and consequently often associated with citrarata or unusual types of intercourse.

Bhagavata Purana (6.18.3) lists Varuna and Mitra as having children through non-vaginal sex. Varuna fathered the sage Valmiki when his semen fell upon a termite mound, and Agastya and Vasistha were born from water pots after Mitra and Varuna discharged their semen in the presence of Urvasi. This account is similar to Gay couples having children through surrogate mothers in modern days.

Mitra was an early Hindu god. He represented the sun, and had many similarities to other contemporary gods in nearby civilizations. Mitra was also notably the god of the oath, along with his associate, Varuna. Mitra, along with Varuna, was generally classed as an asura early on in Hinduism. Asuras are often referred to as demons, but it is important to note that the asuras were not necessarily evil, they were just formed in opposition to the gods known as devas. Perhaps the best comparison is found within the Greek pantheon, where gods such as Zeus and Dionysus were placed in opposition to titans such as Prometheus, not all of whom were necessarily evil.

There was an ancient deity, from the Proto-Indo-Iranian cultures, also named Mitra, who was a god of oaths. This god gave rise to the Mithra god of Zoroastrianism, as well as Mithras from the Greco-Roman period. He also became the Hindu Mitra in early Hinduism.

Mitra is one of the oldest extant gods of Hinduism, and a record of him appears as far back as the 15th century BCE, when he was invoked as a watcher over a pact made between the Hittites and the Hurrians. As time went on, however, Mitra’s role diminished and Varuna became the more important god.

Mitra remained a popular god, however, and is sometimes invoked when signing a contract. Mitra is also the god of friendship, as it is the integrity of truth and oaths that keeps a friendship strong. In many myths Mitra is viewed as a sort of go-between for man with the gods, helping to negotiate with them.

One of the most important prayers in the Rig Veda is written in gratitude to Mitra, and acknowledging the seeking of perfection. The prayer, the upasthaana, is addressed to the god-head in praise of the sun. The upasthaana reads roughly: Oh God! In search of you we leave behind the eternal physical realm, to meditate on an even greater entity, our soul. We attain to the most blissful, luminous light, the illuminator of all things, even of the shining glory of the sun, who is the greatest of all. All the things of this world act as signals to lead us to the god-head, the knower of all things, the possessor of all destructive and sustaining powers. Surely that is the correct path to understanding this universe.
