One Muhurta is 30 Kalas or 48 minutes.

As per Brahmanas, Muhurta is a division of time, which is either one-thirtieth of a day or 48 minutes.

In Manusmiriti, one Kastha refers to as 18 Nimisas. Nimisas means blinking of the eyes.

The seventh sign from the ascendant sign at the time of sunrise is known as Godhuli lagna.

It is considered to be auspicious as all the defects are neglected in this lagna.
In this lagna the nakshatra, tithi, karana, day, navamsha, muhurat, yogas, planets in the eighth house, jamitra dosh etc are not taken into consideration while calculating Godhuli Lagna.
In, this lagna the Moon is situated in the second, third and eleventh house.
All these situations are considered auspicious as well.
Moon and Mars should not be present in the lagna of Godhuli Muhurat.
Moon in the sixth house and Mars in the seventh house should also be sacrificed.
The eighth house from this lagna should also be empty.
Defects of Godhuli Muhrat

It is recommended to sacrifice these defects when calculating godhuli muhurat.
- Sunday should be considered in this muhurat.
- Kulik muhurat period, kranti time, lagna of godhuli muhurat, Moon in the sixth and eighth house should be sacrificed.
- Position of malefic planet in its own lagna nakshatra is not considered auspicious.
- Moon in the first, sixth and eighth house from Godhuli lagna is not considered auspicious for girls.
- Mars in the first, seventh or eighth house from the lagna is not considered auspicious for boys.
- Godhuli muhurat before sunset on Thursday is considered to be inauspicious. However, the time after the sunset can be considered.
- Godhuli muhurat before sunset on Saturday is considered to be auspicious. However, the time after the sunset is not auspicious.
Inauspisious Time In Muhurat
There are many time periods that are always sacrificed due to their negative influence. This period comes between any two different periods such as nakshatra, date, day etc. For instance:
The inauspicious period between nakshatra and date lies between the time of end of the nakshatra and beginning of the date.
This time period is not more than 1 hour 36 minutes.
Nakshatra Inauspicious Period
Nakshatra tajya or inauspicious period is given below:
It is 30 ghati for kritika, punarvasu, magha, and revati.
40 gatti for Rohini.
30 gatti for Ashlesha.
20 gatti after the beginning of purvaphalguni, chitra, uttradha and pushya.
21 gatti after the beginning of ardra and hasta.
50 gatti after Ashwini.
10 gatti after the beginning of uttaraphalguni and shatabhisha.
24 gatti after the beginning of purvashada and bharani.
14 gatti after the beginning of vishakha, swati, mrigashira and jyestha.
16 gatti after the beginning of purvabhadrapad.
10 gatti after the beginning of anuradha, dhanishtha and shravana.
56 gatti after the beginning of mool nakshatra.
This inauspicious period is of 4 gatti and lasts for 1 hour 36 minutes in total.
Date Inauspicious Time
There are some dates that are sacrificed in this muhurat.
The calculation of dates is done from pratipada to chaturdashi/ amavasya to purnima.
These dates are: 15,5,8,7,7,5,4,1,10,3,13,14,7,8, followed by next 4 gatti.
Day Inauspicious Time
Similar to dates and nakshatras there are some days as well that are sacrificed in this muhurat.
The calculation procedure begins from Sunday to Saturday.
These days are: 20, 2,12,10,7,5, 25, followed by next 4 gatti.
There are instances in which these doshas dissolve.
These doshas dissolve when the Moon in situated in the lagna or trikon house and the lord of the ascendant is in its own house, Kendra, trikon, or aspected by any friendly planet.
The situation remains same when Moon is in Mrigshira nakshatra.

Rahu Kaal
According to Vedic astrology, Rahu is an inauspicious planet.

Eight segments of the day are calculated by taking the total time between sunrise and sunset at a given place and then dividing this time duration by eight.
Rahu Kaal timings and duration are not the same for any two locations due to differences in local timings of sunrise and sunset.
Even for one location Rahu Kaal timing and duration are not the same for all days as sunrise and sunset timings keep changing throughout the year.
Hence Rahu Kaal should be looked at each day.
The first period after the sunrise (out of eight divisions of time between sunrise and sunset) which approximately lasts for one and a half hours is always auspicious as this duration of the day is always free from the malefic effects of Rahu.
On Monday Rahu Kaal falls on the 2nd period,
Saturday on the 3rd period,
Friday on the 4th period,
Wednesday on the 5th period,
Thursday on the 6th period,
Tuesday on the 7th period and
Sunday on the 8th period.
Few people consider Rahu Kaal for night duration also which is less popular as the most important and auspicious work is started during day time.
However, Rahu Kaal during the night can also be calculated by dividing the duration between sunset and the next day’s sunrise by eight.
According to some Rahu Kaal Tuesday, Friday and Sunday have more malefic effects than those other weekdays.
What is Muhurta? – Meaning, Significance of Muhura, Types of Muhurta
Since ancient times, Hindus have followed the tradition of choosing an auspicious day and time to perform important functions or events, like marriages, Grihapravesam/housewarming, starting a new business, naming ceremony, Annaprashna, Upanayanam, etc.
This is called Muhurta/Muhurat.
Vedic Astrology claims that it is very important to select a day and time that is suitable for a specific event and is also suitable for the person who performs the event.
This supposedly ensures the success of the event.
The Hindu Panchang has daily Muhurtas to conduct one’s daily activities, as well as Muhurtas for major events.
Rahu Kaal, Abhijit Muhurat, Varjyam, Yamaganda, Durmuhurat, and Amrit Kaal.
are the daily Muhurats that most Hindus still follow.
Muhurta is essentially a Vedic unit of measurement for time.
A 24-hour day+night comprises 30 muhurtas. Each Muhurta lasts for 48 minutes.
Each Muhurta is again divided into 30 Kala ≈ 48 minutes.
The Rig Veda defines Muhurta as “muhu” (moment/immediate) + “ṛta” (order).
Hence, it is the moment that occurs in an order daily.
Mythology also says that Muhurta is one of the 10 wives of Dharma and one of the sixty daughters (shatyamsa) of Daksha Prajapati and Asikni.
Why Are Muhurtas Important?
In the Ramayana, one can come across some references to Muhurtas and their importance.
In the Yuddha Kanda, 4th Sarga, there is a scene in which Rama chooses an auspicious Muhurta to go to Lanka with the Vanara army to rescue Sita.
Ravana was a great astrologer himself and wrote books like Ravana Samhita; still, he did not give importance to Muhurta and paid a heavy price for it.
The 15 Muhurtas of a day are different from the Muhurtas of the night.

Muhurta is only one of the four elements that play a role in the success of an event. The other three are Tithi, Nakshatra, and Karaṇa.

Interestingly, a work called Muhurtamuktavali even suggests an ‘auspicious’ time for stealing!
At the same time, some sages have said that if one’s mind is pure, all the planets will become favorable, and it is not necessary to find an auspicious time to do something.
A Mythological Story about Muhurta
Once, Indra, the king of the Devas/Gods, approached Brihaspati, who was his Guru, to find an auspicious time for planting a forest.
Brihaspati then consulted the Horas and advised Indra about the right Muhurta.
Indra began the forest plantation, and soon enough, the plants grew into a lush forest.
Unfortunately, a summer fire destroyed the entire forest.
A disappointed Indra asked Brihaspati the reason for this, as he had planted the forest at an auspicious time.
Brihaspati’s reply was that anybody could make a mistake and that Brahma alone knew the reason.
Sukracharya, the Guru of the demons, then arrived and chided Indra for his failure.
He added that he had chosen an inauspicious Muhurtha.
He also explained the principles for selecting the Muhurta.
According to Sukracharya, the fundamental difference between Hora (Hour – 60 minutes) and Muhurta (24 minutes) is that Hora is used in personal charts, while Muhurta is used for finding an auspicious time for specific activities.
Sukracharya explained that the time was good for Indra to take up the work as this would not harm him personally.
However, the Muhurta he had chosen was not favorable for planting trees, and hence, the forest was destroyed.
The traditional wisdom of the two great sages can be summarized as follows: –
Brihaspati believed that Guru is the Kavacha/protector of the self and that the first step in Muhurta is to ensure that the time chosen for an activity would not harm the person doing it in any way.
The time should also not lead to further bad Karma for the person.
Sukracharya believed that the time chosen should lead to the fructification of the objective.
Even if there are huge obstacles, they should be overcome.

A Shubh Muhurta helps to concentrate the planetary energies and other astrological factors in an auspicious way so that the evil influences are nullified and the work performed becomes fruitful.

Parts of Muhurat
Astrology says while judging a muhurat it is important to consider the combinations of a weekday with Ascendant and nakshatra.
Muhurat of auspicious and placid nakshatra is apt for carrying out a good job.
To get a desired muhurat, purification of Ascendant is also required.
So, while judging muhurat fair attention must be given to the status of the Ascendants.
A person receives double benefits if his navamsha is also auspicious.
To get a good muhurat it should be noticed that a person’s kundli does not have any planet in the eighth house and the Ascendant is with an auspicious planet.
If there is no such placement then position of auspicious planet in the Trikha and Kendra house will prove good or placement of s malefic planet in the third, sixth and eleventh house will work wonder.
While judging a best muhurat it is required that the Ascendant is not placed along with the Moon and the Paap Kartari dosha is not formed.
The the Ascendant should not fall in the second house to the Moon and there should be no malefic planet in the twelfth house from Moon.
Some precautions in muhurat
There are some special precautions in muhurat which should be followed to get benefits out of it.
New business work should not be done in Rikta tithi or in the fourth, ninth and fourteenth days of the lunar month.
New moon days are also considered inauspicious for holy or good works.
Agreements should not be made on Sundays, Tuesdays and Saturdays.
New project should not be started in the Nanda tithi and during pratipada, sixth and eleventh days of a lunar day.
New business plans should not be finalized during three days before and after a planet is combust and rising.
When the lord of the birth sign and birth nakshatra combusts, debilitate or falls between enemy planets then professional and personal facts of your life should not be executed.
In muhurat the avoidance of khshay tithi is also necessary.
To avoid failure, a person should not start a new task in the fourth, eighth and twelfth sign of a Moon from his birth sign.
A child’s admission in school should be avoided in Devshayan (when Gods are sleeping) period.
