They could not do anything, but Shanidev told them that he might help them to get freedom.
Raavan was believed to be a great astrologer. Raavan placed all the planets in the 11th House after the birth of his eldest son Meghnath so that he could also be invincible and immortal like him. But Shanidev stretched his leg a little bit from Raavan’s clutches towards his 12th House to jeopardize his plan.
When Raavan came to knew about this that it will cause Meghnath’s death, he imprisoned Shani in a dark room so that nobody could see Saturn’s face again.
After some time, when Hanumanji reached Lanka in search of Goddess Sita, He heard Shani’s cries from a faraway place. When Hanumanji looked here and there, he found Shani imprisoned in a dark room.
Lord Hanuman freed Him upon His request, but Hanumanji became the victim of Shani’s gaze towards Him.

Shanivar Vrat Katha
The Shanivar Vrat Katha pertains to a small story from Ramayana. As we all are aware, the demon king Ravana had pleased Tridev and received a book from Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to be immortal. Thus, Ravana had gained control over the entire solar system with the nine planets. He placed these 9 planets under the staircase of his main hall in which his mighty throne was situated. He used to feel proud while climbing up the stairs to his throne. Ravana had imprisoned all the Devatas, Gandharvas, Nagas and Lokpal.
All of them were deeply worried when Shanidev offered to help them. Ravana was said to be an amazing astrologer. He used his wisdom in astrology and placed all the nine planets in the 11th house post the birth of his eldest son Meghnath so that he too could be immortal and invincible like Ravana. At that time Shanidev played a trick and stretched his leg a bit towards the 12th house to fail Ravana’s plan. Thus, Ravana’s plan failed and Meghnath’s death was ascertained due to the trick played by Shanidev. When Ravana came to know about this, he got furious and imprisoned Lord Shani in a completely dark room so that no one could see his face ever again.
After a while, when Lord Hanuman reached Lanka searching for Mata Sita, he heard the faint cries of Lord Shani from a distance. He searched here and there out of curiosity and found Shanidev imprisoned in the dark room. He freed deity Shani upon his request but Shanidev looked at Hanuman, thus making him a victim of Shani’s gaze. However, to reduce the pain of Lord Hanuman, Shanidev promised him that devotees who would pray to Hanuman on Saturday would get rid of the malefic effects of planet Saturn. Therefore, the Hindu devotees worship Lord Hanuman along with Lord Shani on Saturdays during the Shanivar Vrat to seek his divine blessings and get rid of all problems and obstacles in life.

Once a debate occurred between all the Gods in the heaven about the greatest of them all. But, they were unable to decide and the debate turned into a war like situation. All of them then went to Indra and asked him to adjudicate the matter. Indra was in great dilemma and after thinking for some times he said about his inability to judge the matter and suggested them to go to the court of king Vikramaditya of Ujjayani who is known to be a great justice.
On his suggestion, all the gods went on earth and visited Ujjayani. When Vikramaditya came to know about the visit of Gods, he himself welcomed them. After coming to his court, the Gods asked him to solve the matter. Vikramaditya too got in great dilemma as he knew that all the gods were powerful in their own ways and telling anyone small or big may bring him his ire.
After thinking for some times, the king got an idea. He ordered for nine chairs made of different metals: Gold, Silver, Bismuth, Copper, Lead, Galena, Zinc, Mica and iron respectively and got it kept in a row one after the other. He then requested the gods to sit on their respective seats. When the Gods sat, he said that you all have yourself judged the greatest of you all. The God sitting on the first seat is the most powerful. Shani Dev was sitting on the last seat. On listening the judgement, he felt humiliated and got angry.
He said “you do not realise my power. I will destroy you. Sun stays in a zodiac for one month; Moon for two and quarter days; Mars for 1 and ½ months; Mercury and Venus for 1 month; Jupiter for 13 Months but I can stay in a sign for 7 and ½ years. Even big Gods had suffered my ire.
Ram had to stay in the forest due to Sadesati and even and Ravana died and his family got destroyed in the war due to Sadesati. Now its your turn to face my ire. All the Gods then went away.
After few days Shani Deva visited Ujjayani in disguise of a horse trader. He brought many attractive horses along with him. When Vikramaditya came to know about this, he sent his stable-lad (Ashwapaal) to buy some horses but was perplexed on knowing the prices as they were too expensive. He went back and informed the king about the same. Then the king himself went to the trader and selected a beautiful and healthy horse for himself.
When the king sat on the horse to take a ride, it took of with the speed of a light and took the king to a far away forest and dropped him there and disappeared. The King loitered in the forest in hunger and thirst to locate and reach his kingdom but of no avail. After some time he met a cow-herd and asked him for some water. After soothing his thirst, the king gave him his ring. The king then asked him the way and reached to a city nearby.
The king rested on a shop of a businessman and told him that he is from Ujjayani. While the king was on his shop, the businessman earned high profits and the businessman took him to be a lucky visitor for him and took Vikramaditya to his home for meal. The king saw a necklace hanging on the peg and to his surprise he saw the peg swallowing the necklace. When the businessman saw that the necklace is not there, he took the king to be a thief. He ordered his servants to tie Vikramaditya with a rope and take him to the king of that city.
Though Vikramaditya explained him the real story, the king did not believed him and ordered to slit his hands and legs. His hands and legs were cut and then he was left on the city streets. Few days later a Teli(Oil-man) felt pity and took him to his house. The Teli taught him to ride bullocks and handed him this work.
Time passed and the period of Sadesati was over and spring season came. One night the king was singing Megh Malhar Raga. At that time, the princess of the town, Mohini, was passing from nearby and was attracted by the song. She sent her attendant to call the singer. When the attendant returned, she told the story of the king to the princess.
The princess was attracted towards the singer and even after knowing about his paralysis, the princess decided to marry him. Initially her parents resisted the decision but the princess protested and said that she will marry that person only or else she will remain unmarried. Finally the king agreed to marry the Princess to Vikramaditya.
After marriage, Vikramaditya and the princess started living in the house of the Teli. One night, Shani Dev came in his dreams and said “you ranked me lowest among the Gods but now you have seen my power”. Then Vikramaditya apologised to him. Shani Dev accepted his prayers and disappeared. In the morning, Vikramaditya and his wife was surprised to see his body back to its previous shape. The king then thanked Shani Dev and told the princess about his real identity and about the Sadesati of Shani Dev.
The father of the princess became very happy on knowing about thee king Vikramaditya and the businessman who blamed of stealing his necklace came running to him. He fell down on his legs and apologised from Vikramaditya. The businessman invited Vikramaditya to his house for dinner. Suddenly to every bodies surprise, the necklace reappeared. Even the businessman then married his daughter to king Vikramaditya. and then sent them to his kingdom along with many gold jewelleries and other gifts.
When Vikramaditya reached Ujjayani along with the princess Mohini and the daughter of the businessman, they were received with full warmth and the peoples burnt candles and celebrated Diwali in this happiness. Next day the king made an announcement that Shani Dev is most powerful of all the Gods and all the men and women should observe his fast and listen his Katha. This announcement made Shani Dev very happy and from that day onwards the wishes of all the people observing this fast started getting fulfilled with his compassion.

Many keep a fast on Saturdays but are you keeping it the right way with the right customs? Here is a low down or checklist on how the fast is supposed to be kept.

Mythology Behind Saturday Fasting
As per mythology, the story behind the fast kept on Saturdays is rather interesting. There was once a debate between the nine planets as to which one is the most powerful. The matter was escalated to Vikramaditya, who was the king of Ujjain for adjudication. The latter made nine thrones out of metals bronze, silver, gold, copper, brass, zinc, mica, tin, and iron. He then asked each of the planetary Gods to sit on them.
Besides Shani, all the other Gods rushed to take a seat. Shani was left to occupy the iron throne. Shani felt aggrieved as came in last and had to take the seat. He decided to give serious trouble to the king and then it all began.
Just a few days later, Vikramaditya had gone hunting but lost his way. He starved for food, and accidentally entered some other territory. He was caught and called thief. His hands and feet were cut off as a punishment. But he still managed to get a job as an oil seed crusher. He still kept moving on, did not lose heart and this earned him the mercy of Shani. So the curse was withdrawn, Vikaramaditya regained his limbs, and married the princess of that land. He returned to his kingdom and thus realised the power of Lord Shani. He then began worshipping him and observed the Shanivar Vrat.

When Lord Hanuman went to Lanka for Sita, he picked up a fight with the demons then set fire to Lanka. Just before he was on his way back, he found Shani in Ravana’s captivity. There arose a debate once, among the nine planets, as to who was the most powerful among them. They started fighting among themselves as a result they couldn’t arrive to any conclusion. So they took the issue to Lord Indra, king of Gods but even he was unable to solve the issue. Hence, he directed them to Vikramaditya, the wise king of Ujjain who was known for his fair judgements. Vikramaditya made nine thrones out of metals like gold, silver, bronze, copper, brass, tin, zinc, mica and iron and requested each of the planetary Gods to occupy one of them. While other planets rushed and occupied the thrones made of superior metals, Shani was left to occupy the unoccupied throne of iron. Then, the king gave the verdict that the power of the planet is in line with the standard of the throne he has occupied. Forced to occupy the throne of iron, the most ordinary of metals, Shani felt aggrieved at the decision of the king and decided to return the compliment to him. And serious troubles began for the king.
Just a few days later, Vikramaditya who went for hunting in the forest lost his way, was starved for food, strayed into some other territory, was caught and charged by the people as a thief, and had his hands and feet cut off, as a punishment. Still he managed to get a job as an oil seed crusher and was carrying on with his life stoically, with prayers and firm faith in God. This earned for him the mercy of Shani, who withdrew his curse. With the ending of the bad patch, Vikramaditya regained his limbs, married the princess of that land and returned to his kingdom to an emotional welcome by the people. Realizing the importance and power of Lord Shani, because of whose curse he had to suffer terribly for seven and half years, Vikramaditya began worshipping Shani and observing the Shanivar Vrat.

shanivar vrat
Brajkishor Sharma “Brajvaasi”
shanivar vrat shanivar vrat kisi bhi shanivar se praranbh kiya ja sakta hai. manav apne kalyan ke lie samay ka chintan n kar shubhta v mangal hetu vrat ka palan karen. shanivar ka vrat shani, rahu aur ketu grahon ki kop-shanti ke lie kiya jata hai. maharshi yagyavaklya ne in tinon grahon ke svarupon ka varnan karte hue aisi sammati pradan ki hai. shani vrat ka palan karne vale vyapar vriddhi, dhan, sukh-shanti samriddhi ko to prapt hote hi hain, apitu unke jivan men shani dev ki kripa se man pratishtha, aishvarya evan dharm, arth, kam, moksh rupi purusharth bhi sahjta se siddh ho jate hain. shanivar ka vrat am jivan men visheshtah shani ki sarhesati, shani ki dhaiyya, shani ki mahadsha-antardasha, pratyantardasha se grasit jatak hi karte hain, parantu aisa bahut vidvanon ka manna hai ki shani vrat sabhi ko karna chahie. shri shani dev apne vishisht gunon ke karan navagrahon men sarvadhik charchit hai. puranon ke anusar shani bhagvan surya ke putra hain.
chaya (savarna) inki mata hain. bhartiya jyotish men shani ko krur grah mana gaya hai. inki drishti men jo krurta hai, vah inki patni ke shap ke karan hai. is sandarbh men brahmavaivartapuran men katha is prakar hai, ‘bachpn’ se hi shanidev atyant dharmik hone ke karan sansarik vishyon se sada dur rahte the. vyask hone par inki ichcha n hone par bhi inka vivah kar diya gaya. patni param sundri, pativrata evan tejasvini thi. parantu shanidev unki or kabhi ankh uthakar bhi nahin dekhte the. ek rat jab patni shringar karke unke nikat putra-prapti ki abhilasha se ai tab bhi shanidev ne unki or dhyan nahin diya tatha vah ishvar ke chintan men nimagn rahe. apni upeksha se kruddh hokar sadhvi ne pati shanidev ko shap de diya- ‘ap jis par bhi drishti daloge vah nasht ho jaega’ sati ka shap amogh hota hai.
uske pratikar ki shakti kisi men bhi nahin hai. isi se shani ki drishti sanharak ban gai. shastriya vichardhara se ‘shani’ ke adhidevta unke bhai ‘yamraj’ tatha pratyadhidevta ‘prajapti’ hain. lekin jyotish ke suprasiddh granth ‘lal kitab’ ne bhairav ji ko shani ka devta mana hai. kaliyug ke niyantrak grah hone ke karan aj shanidev ka svatantra rup se pujan prachlit ho gaya hai. shani-mandiron ka nirantar nirman hone se unhonne navagrahon ki sima langhakar janastha men sanpurn devatva grahan kar liya hai. adhyatmik jyotish men shani ko purvajanm ke sanchit karmon ka adhishthata bataya gaya hai.
shani ki sarhesati, dhaiyya athva shani ki dasha men hamen pichle dushkarmon ka hi dand prapt hota hai. jis prakar ag men tap kar sona kundan ho jata hai usi prakar shani balpurvak prayashchit karva ke jivatma ko shuddh kar deta hai. bhautik drishti men shani bhale hi atikrur dikhai pare parantu sachche arthon men vah hamari agni-pariksha lekar hamen ishvar ke samip le jate hain. sahi maynon men shani ishvariya shasan ke ‘dandadhikari’ hain.
nitya pratah dhyanpurvak shani stotra ka path karne se shani ki sarhesati ya dhaiyya men shanikrit pira shant ho jati hai. shanivar ke din pipal ke per ki jar ko sinchakar uske niche dip-dan karne ke bad vriksh ki sat parikrama karne se bhi shani ki badha dur hoti hai. kale ghore ki nal athva nav ki kil se bane challe ko dahine hath ki madhyama men dharan karna hitkari siddh hota hai.
shani ki upasna-shani mantra ke jap se shani ki pratikul sthiti men prakop ka shaman hone ke sath-sath sukh samriddhi ki prapti hoti hai atah shani ki prasannata ke lie unke nimn mantra ka jap karna shighra faldayak siddh hoga -kk ain hrin shrin shanaishcharay namah . kaliyug se purva matra 23000 jap karne se mantra siddh ho jata tha parantu kaliyug men pap ka bal dharm se char guna adhik hone ke karan uparyukt sankhya ke char guna 92000 jap karne ke uprant hi mantra ka shastrokt fal prapt hoga. jap ke bad dashansh havan – dashansh tarpan – dashansh marjan evan dashansh brahman bhojan bhi avashya karayen. jap rudraksh ki mala par karna uchit rahega.
havan shami ke samidha se karen. shani ki shanti hetu nilam, loha, tel, urad, kala kapra, kulthi, kali gay, bhains, kharaun (charnpaduka), kala til, surma nile rang ke pushp, kasturi aur svarn adi ke dan ka shastriya vidhan hai. ap apni samarthya evan suvidha ke anusar vastuon ka dan shanivar ko kar sakte hain. jyeshth mas ki bhishan garmi men kisi nirdhan ke nange pairon men chappal athva juta pahnana bahut achcha fal dega. shani ke pratinidhi sevak (naukr) ka dhyan rakhen. shani ke vahan kaue ko nitya bhojan se purva gras dene se bari rahat milti hai.
shanivar ko karve tel se bhare lohe ke patra men apni pratibinb dekhakar uska dan dene se shanikrit arisht ka nivaran hota hai. shanivar ko lohe ka tava aur chimta dan karne se bhi shani ke karan ho raha kasht kam ho jata hai. shani se pirit vyakti sharab bilkul n pie, anyatha koi bhi upay falibhut nahin hoga. shani vayu tatva ka svami hai. iski viprit sthiti se ahankar udit ho jata hai jo ki bad men vinash ka karan ban jata hai. pratikul shani krodhavesh ke karan kalh-kalesh utpann karta hai, atah vyakti ko dhairya, sanyam aur vivek se kam lena chahie. shani ke ashubh hone par jaldabaji men kie gae faisle galat sabit hote hain. islie uttejna men nirnay lene se bachen.
jokhim lene par labh ke sthan par hani hi hath lagti hai. vastutah shani hamare dushkarmon ke lie hi dandit karte hain. shani ki sarhesati, dhaiyya adi pratikul dasha men apne sanchit karmon ka fal avashya bhogna parta hai. ve nishpaksh nyayadhish ki tarah hamen galat kamon ke lie hi saja dete hain. is prakar shani praniyon ko satkarm karne hetu prerit karte hain. unki adalat men sadaiv insaf hota hai. jis shanivar se vrat praranbh karna ho, us din dainik krityon ko purn kar shastrokt vidhi se shani vrat ke palan hetu sankalp avashya karen. sankalp hi siddhiyon ka mul hai.
shanidev ke pujan se purva ganesh gauryadi dev pujnoprant shani dev ka pujan karne se uttam labh ki prapti hoti hai. isdin shani ke stotra, shani charitra evan katha adi ka shravan karen. vratktha : ek samay surya, chandrama, mangal, budh, brihaspati, shukra, shani, rahu evan ketu adi grahon men paraspar vivad ho gaya- ki ham sab men bara kaun hai? sabhi grah apne apko bara kahne lage. devraj indra grahon ka yah prashn sunakar bhaybhit ho gae tatha kahne lage ki mujhmen itni samarthya nahin ki main kisi ko chota batla sakun. is samay prithvi par raja vikramaditya hain, ve sabki samasyaon ka samadhan atyant buddhimani se karte hain.
kahan rajkumari aur kahan ek chaurangiya. raja ne kaha- ye sab bhagya ka khel hai. tum jakar vivah ki taiyariyan karo. raja ne shubh muhurt dekhakar rajkumari ka vivah chaurangiya ke sath kar diya. rat ko jab vikramaditya mahal men so rahe the to shanidev ne vikramaditya ko svapn men darshan die aur kaha- he raja ! mujhe chota batlakar tumne kitne kasht uthae. raja ne shanidev se kaha prabhu mere apradh ke lie mujhe kshama kar do. shanidev raja se prasann ho gae tatha unhonne raja ko kshama kar diya aur raja ko uske hath -pair vapis kar die. tab raja ne hath jorakar shanidev se vinay ki – he shanidev ! meri apse vinti hai
ki apne jaise kasht mujhe die aise kisi ko kabhi nahin dena. shanidev ne prasann hokar kaha- rajan! tumhari vinti mujhe svikar hai. jo vyakti nitya prati mera dhyan karega. meri katha sunega, kahega use meri dasha men kabhi koi dukh nahin hoga tatha jo bhi manushya pratidin mera dhyan kar chitiyon ko ata dalega uske sabhi manorath purn honge. yah kahakar shanidev antardhyan ho gae. pratahkal jab rajkumari manbhavni ki ankh khuli to usne chaurangiya ko hath-pair sahit dekha to uske ashcharya ki sima n rahi. usne vikramaditya ko jagaya aur iska karan pucha. tab raja ne sara vritant rajkumari ko kah sunaya. yah sunakar rajkumari ati prasann hui. pratah kal manbhavni ki sakhiyon ne pichli ratri ka hal-chal pucha to usne ratri ki ghatna ka tatha uske hath-pair sahi ho jane ka sara vritant kah sunaya. jab us seth ko yah ghatna pata chali to vah vikramaditya ke pas aya aur usne raja se kshama mangi aur kaha- he maharaj ! mainne ap par chori ka jhutha arop lagaya. mujhe kshama kar dijiye.
raja ne kaha-yah sab mere bhagya tatha shanidev ji ke kop ke karan hua, ismen tumhara koi dosh nahin tha. tab seth ne kaha- he maharaj ! yadi apne vastav men mujhe kshama kar diya hai to fir mere ghar chalakar bhojan grahan karen, tabhi mujhe shanti prapt hogi. raja ne kaha-jaisa ap uchit samjhen. vyanjan banvae aur jab raja vikramaditya ko amantrit kiya. jab raja tatha rajkumari bhojan kar rahe the, to sabne ek bari ashcharyajanak ghatna dekhi. jo khunti pahle har nigal chuki thi vahi khunti har ugal rahi thi. bhojan ki samapti par seth ne hath jorakar raja se kaha-maharaj meri shrikanvri nam ki ek kanya hai.
ap use patni ke rup men varan karen. raja vikramaditya ne seth ki bat svikar kar li aur seth ne apni kanya ka vivah raja se kar diya aur bahut si bhent raja ko di, is prakar anandpurvak kuch samay tak seth ke rajya men rahne ke pashchat raja vikramaditya ne apne shvasur raja se kaha ki ab meri ujjain jane ki ichcha hai. kuch din bad vida lekar rajkumari manbhavni, seth ki kanya shrikanvri tatha donon jagah se dahej men prapt anek das-dasi, rath aur palkiyon sahit raja vikramaditya ujjain ki taraf chal pare. jab ve shahar ke nikat pahunche aur ujjainvasiyon ne raja ke ane ka samachar suna to ujjain ki praja agvani ke lie ai. prasannata se raja apne mahal men padhare. sare nagar men bhari utsav manaya gaya aur ratri ko dipmala ki gai. dusre din raja ne apne pure rajya men ghoshna karvai ki shani devta sab grahon men sarvopri hain.
mainne inko chota batlaya isi se mujhko yah dukh prapt hua. is prakar sare rajya men sada shanidev ki puja aur katha hone lagi. raja aur praja anek prakar ke sukh bhogti rahi. jo koi shanidev ki is katha ko parhta ya sunta hai, shanidev ki kripa se uske sab dukh dur ho jate hain. vrat karne vale ko shanidev ki katha ko avashya parhna chahie.
Saturday Fast – Rituals, Method, and Benefits
Shani Maharaj is the lord of Saturday. He gives fruits to the person according to his karma, hence he is called the god of justice. The people having Mahadasha of Shani should observe a fast on Saturday because if Shani Dev will be pleased with your worship, then there will be an end of sorrows in your life. Shani Dev likes black things very much, so black sesame seeds, black clothes, oil, and urad are very dear.
Saturday Fasting Method
A person observing a Saturday fast should wake up before sunrise in the morning on the day of the fast. In the morning, after completing his daily work, he should purify the house by sprinkling Ganga water or any other holy water in the house. After bathing, wear blue or black clothes and worship Shani Dev. Worshiping the idol of Shanidev made of iron kept in an iron vessel containing sesame oil is auspicious. Along with the material of worship, especially black flowers of Kagmachi or Kalagraha, two black clothes, black sesame seeds, and boiled rice should be gifted to Shani Dev. One should worship the Lord with Shani Chalisa, Stotra, Mantra, and Aarti. Shani Vrat Katha should be recited. Also, one should visit the Shani temple in the morning and evening to see Shani Dev. Offer prasad of sesame oil, black urad dal, black items, black sesame, and food made of oil in the temple of Shani Dev. The story should be listened to while worshiping. Food should be eaten only after 2 hours of sunset. Food items made from urad dal should be given to the beggar first and then eaten. Donations should be given to poor people according to the capacity of the individual. Donations can include a black blanket, umbrella, sesame seeds, shoes, etc. If possible, chant the mantra of the Shani planet as many times as possible.
Saturday Fasting Rituals
Shani Dev rituals should be done on the last Saturday after fasting on the 17th, 27th, 37th, and 57th, or as many fasts as you had resolved to do. After completing the resolution of the fast, wake up on the next Saturday morning, after retiring from daily activities, take a bath by pouring Ganga water and black sesame in the bath water and chant the mantra. After this, chant the Beej Mantra of Shani Dev at least 108 times or more times according to your reverence, or by offering Shani Stotra by King Dasharatha to the sacrificial fire by offering Shami wood and material in the Yagya. After the completion of the havan, donate the shadow pot and the materials related to Shani Dev to the poor.
Saturday Fasting Benefits
Worship of Shani Dev increases hard work, discipline, and ability to make decisions. Worship of Shani Dev leads to disease-free life and an increase in life. By observing a fast on Saturday, the defects of the planet Shani end, and the wrath of Shani Dev can also be avoided. By observing Saturday fast and worship one gets freedom from the effect of Sade Sati. People’s work gets done. Worship on Saturday brings success in job and business. By fasting and worshiping Saturday, happiness-prosperity, honor-respect and wealth-fame are attained. By observing fast on Saturday, happiness and peace remain in the house.
Fasting and its Significance
‘Fasting’ refers to abstaining from food or certain kind of food items as a prayer or tribute to the divine. Fasting can offer you both spiritual and physical benefits and gives you an opportunity to connect with your favorite deity. It purifies both your external and internal impurities. Also called as Upavas or Vrat, it can also help cleanse your system and improve your body metabolism.
Importance of the 7 Week Days
Each of the 7 week days represents a planet and is named only after them, as per the Hindu system. Thus, Monday represents the Moon; Tuesday, Mars; Wednesday, Mercury; Thursday, Jupiter; Friday, Venus; Saturday, Saturn; and Sunday, the Sun. The days of the week are also dedicated to specific deities. Offering your sincere prayers to that particular deity and the planetary god on his or her special weekday is believed to please the deity and help receive their blessings in abundance.
Saturday and Planet Saturn
Saturn remains perhaps the most feared divine entity in the Hindu pantheon. While people generally pray to Gods seeking relief from other troubles, they worship Shani to reduce the intensity of his negative effects. Planet Saturn is called Shani, and Saturday, the day of Saturn, is known as Shanivar. While this slow moving planet represents austerity, longevity, concentration and meditation, discipline, and restrictions, it particularly signifies old age, disease, suffering and even death. It also has the power to obstruct and destroy. This is the reason he is given the epithet Eshwara, from the supreme Lord Shiva himself and is called as Shaneeshwara. The presiding deities of planet Saturn are Lord Shiva and his incarnation, Hanuman and Saturdays are dedicated for their worship.
Mythology Behind Saturday Fasting
Saturday Fasting
There arose a debate once, among the nine planets , as to who was the most powerful among them. The issue went to Vikramaditya, the wise king of Ujjain for adjudication.
With the ending of the bad patch, Vikaramaditya regained his limbs, married the princess of that land and returned to his kingdom to an emotional welcome by the people. Realizing the importance and power of Lord Shani, because of whose curse he had to suffer terribly for seven and half years, Vikramaditya began worshipping Shani and observing the Shanivar Vrat.
Another interesting mythology associates Shani with Hanuman . Once Shani got cursed by Lord Brahma that he would undergo confinement and be ultimately be freed by an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Later, Hanuman went to Lanka in search of Sita, found her there, then picked up a fight with the demons there, troubled them and then set fire to Lanka. Just before returning, he found Shani in Ravana’s captivity. An aspect of Shiva that he is, Hanuman released the planetary God and carried him on his shoulders to freedom. Extremely delighted, Lord Shani granted a boon to Hanuman that his devotees would not suffer due to the ill effects of Shani.

Varth kath – I
Once there was a Brahman. He used to guard against evil spirits at the king’s main gate palace. One day he heard a strange voice and was frightened. He heard this voice for a number of days. He never talked about that mysterious voice to his wife. One day his wife said, “I try to provide you best nutritious meals, still you are losing your health. What is wrong with you?” For some time, he kept mum. His wife insisted that he should reveal his internal feelings to get rid of any * unnecessary strain. The Brahman said, “I hear a strange voice every Saturday. It says that it wants to afflict the king. The duration of affliction will be either seven-and-a-half years or two-and-a-half years or two-and-a-half months or two-and-a-half days or at least for two-and-a-half prahar i.e. seven-and-a-half hours. The king can opt for any period but the affliction is a must.”
The Brahman’s wife smiled and said, “Why didn’t you tell it earlier? The king must be saved even at our cost. You accept two-and-a-half ‘prahars’ affliction for you. The spirit again visited the palace and repeated the same message. The Brahman said, “I offer to take King’s affliction upon myself. You can be upon me for two-and-a-half prahars.” The spirit was pleased at Brahman’s offer. The Brahman went to a riverbank. He wanted to spent that time in meditation. He noticed two water-melons floating on the surface of water. He caught them by their tops and placed them under his thigh.
The king’s princes had been out for hunting for the last two days. They had not returned. The king was in great agony. He sent his messengers in various directions for searching out the princes. Incidentally, a messenger came to the Brahman. To his great surprise, he saw that the Brahman was hiding the heads of the princes under his thigh. He reported the matter to the king. The king was enraged. He ordered that the Brahman be impaled or hanged. The king asked the Brahman what his last desire was. The Brahman said, “Please do not kill me for two-and-a-half prahars.”
The king agreed. As the stipulated time was over arrangements for Brahman’s end were made ready. The Brahman was to be beheaded with a red hot iron spear. As the slaughter man attacked the Brahman, the hot spear got broken into pieces. The slaughter man now took a red hot silver spear. That spear too was broken into pieces before it touched the Brahman’s neck. The slaughter man took out a red hot golden spear and tried to behead the Brahman. The third spear also did have a different fate.
The onlookers were surprised at the sight of such a miracle. Suddenly, the princes too, appeared at the scene. The king embraced the princes and felt sorry for he Brahman. The king said, “O, Brahman! What is this puzzle?” Reveal this mystery to one and all.” The Brahman said, “The Saturn wanted to afflict you. I took your affliction upon me to save you and the kingdom. The Saturn made the water melons appear as human heads. Now could I have killed the princes? I have always been a saviour of this kingdom.” The king said, “1 don’t believe your utterings. I want to see the Saturn myself. If you do not show me, all the members of your family will be crushed in the grinder.” The Brahman began to tremble. He begged for a week’s time. He went to his house. His wife said, “You look pale and horrified. What is the matter?” The Brahman said, “The Saturn wrought the affliction on me. I was saved because I acted according to your advice. Now, if I do not show Saturn to the king, all of us will be crushed under the grinder wheels.”
The Brahman’s wife said, “Have patience. You staked your life for a better cause. God will help us.” The Brahman had a sigh of relief. His wife said, “Ask the king to get up early in the morning on the coming Saturday. Saturn will be riding a black horse under the black mountain. He will be covered with a black blanket, all soaked in oil. The king can have his glimpse.” The Brahman took the king to the black mountain the next Saturday. A black shadow was riding a black horse. The king said, “Who are you?” The Saturn said, “I am Saturn. I afflict the poor as well as the kings alike.”
The king said, “How can we avoid your affliction?” The Saturn said, “The rich should donate a black horse or one-and-a-quarter maunds of gold on Saturday. The middle-income group can donate iron and black blankets. The poor can give oil-touched loaf to a black dog. The still poorer can water a peepal tree, place some gur there and wrap the tree with a piece of kuchcha thread.” The Brahman said, “Do not afflict our king. Your affliction on the king will affect our town. I can stand your afflictions on myself in the future also.”
The Saturn suddenly disappeared alongwith his black horse and the king returned to his palace. He was pleased with the Brahman. The Brahman’s wife felt happy when the husband reported the whole happening to her.

Once a dispute erupted between the 9 planets residing in the heavens, who is the largest and most powerful planet. When the controversy increased more and life was affected due to the dispute between the Navagrahas. Then Devraj Indra called him to the court and heard his problem, But they failed to find an answer for this either. He told the Navagrahas that you simply people should move to King Vikramaditya in Bhooloka, and you may answer it. Reaching the Navagraha king, he questioned which planet is that the largest and therefore the strongest. Vikramaditya was a little nervous initially, so he thought that if he gives any answer, then they’ll be hated among themselves, in order that they take an answer with their understanding. He made gold-silver and iron thrones for every planet and said that whosoever is holding the seat, whose throne is first, gold is that the biggest, the one behind which is the smallest. Now the iron throne was left behind which was for Shanidev. Seeing the iron throne at the rear, Shanidev got angry. He told Vikramaditya that hey fool, Sun, Mercury, Venus board one zodiac one month and Mars 1.5 months and Moon 2 months and Jupiter 13 months, but I 2 in one zodiac. you’ve insulted me which isn’t right. Saying this, Shanidev disappeared. Now the day has also come when Vikramaditya got the condition of Saturn and a half. Now Shanidev reached the town of Vikramaditya as a dealer. Vikramaditya liked Ghouta and rode on that.
As soon as the horse was riding, the horse got wings and he took Rajan to a foreign forest and slammed there and became invisible. Vikramaditya lost his way within the dense forest and forgot the way to return to the kingdom. Then a shepherd appeared and gave him his ring and drank water and asked him the way to the nearby town. While walking, Raja got tired and sat down at a Seth shop. Suddenly the amount of visitors to the shop started increasing as they sat. Seth thought this person was very lucky, So Seth stopped the king and requested him to take food. Seth went out for a long time, leaving the king with food. Now, while eating, Vikramaditya saw that Khunti was swallowing the necklace hanging on the peg. When Seth returned, seeing the necklace missing, he suspected the king. He called the soldiers of the town and handed over Vikramaditya to them. The king of the town ordered Vikramaditya to stop his hands and feet. Now the king’s condition has become very bad. At this time, Teli glided by and he felt compassionate Vikramaditya. He made him sit on his crusher and gave the bullock employment. This led to Vikramaditya getting the bread of Doojun. Gradually, the king’s bad times began to pass and Saturn’s condition ended.

But the princess decided to marry Vikramaditya and at last Vikramaditya and Manabhavani got married. After marriage, King Vikramaditya and Princess began living in Teli’s house. That night, Shanidev appeared within the dream to the king and he said that you just have seen my wrath, king. I’ve punished you for your insults. Vikramaditya remembered all the items and apologized to Shani Dev and said that Shani Dev has a decent knowledge of your powers and begs you to not do it with anyone as I’ve got done to me. Then Shanidev said that okay I accept your prayer, Will worship me and hear the fasting story, he will be free from all troubles and all his desires will be fulfilled. Saying this, Shanidev became invisible. When the king aroused from sleep in the morning, his arms and legs were healed and also the princess wasn’t happy to determine this. Then Vikramaditya told Manabhavani the complete tragedy. Later, the king expressed his desire to return back to his kingdom. Shanivar ki Kahani
This story is related to Saturday fast. The devotees worship Saturn idol made of iron. Black flowers, black sesame seeds (til), horse bean (urada) and black clothes are used for worshipping. Black articles and oil are given in donation. Black sesame and horse bean are consumed as food. Wives do not perform journey to their paternal home town. The Saturday fast keeps away all the hurdles and misfortunes. Saturn sits in a mirror chariot, yoked with eight black horses. Once there was a Brahman who used to guard against evil spirits at the king’s main gate palace. One day, he heard a strange voice and got frightened. He heard this voice for a couple of days.
He never talked about that mysterious voice to his wife. One day his wife said, “I try to provide you the best nutritious meals, still you are losing your health. What is wrong with you?” For some time, he kept mum. His wife insisted that he should reveal his internal feelings to get rid of any unnecessary strains. The Brahman said, “I hear a strange voice every Saturday. It says that it wants to afflict the king. The duration of affliction will be either seven-and-a-half years or two-and-a-half years or two-and-a-half months or two-and-a-half days or at least for two-and-a-half prahar i.e., seven-and-a-half hours.
The Brahman said, “I offer to take the king’s affliction upon myself. You can be upon me for two-and-a-half prahars.” The spirit was pleased at Brahman’s offer. The Brahman went to a riverbank. He wanted to spend that time in meditation.
The Brahman said, “Please do not kill me for two-and-a-half prahars.” The king agreed. As the stipulated time was over, arrangements for Brahman’s end were made ready.
The third spear, too, did not have a different fate. The onlookers were surprised at the sight of such a miracle. Suddenly, the princes too, appeared at the scene. The king embraced the princes and felt sorry for the Brahman. The king said, “O, Brahman! What is this puzzle?” Reveal this mystery to one and all.”
The Brahman said, “The Saturn wanted to afflict you. I took your affliction upon me to save you and the kingdom. The Saturn made the water melons appear as human heads. Now could I have killed the princes? I have always been a savior of this kingdom.” The king said, “I don’t believe your uttering.
I afflict the poor as well as the kings alike.” The king said, “How can we avoid your affliction?”
The Saturn said, “The rich should donate a black horse or one-and-a-quarter maunds of gold on Saturday. I can stand your afflictions on myself in the future also.” The Saturn suddenly disappeared along with his black horse and the king returned to his palace. He was pleased with the Brahman. The Brahman’s wife felt happy when the husband reported the whole happening to her.
Shanivar ki Kahani – II
This story is also related to Saturday fast. People eat parched grams on this day to keep off the influence of Saturn. They massage their bodies with mustard oil and also give oil in donation. Once, the seven gods, the lords of the seven days of the week, were having an exchange of wit for their amusement. Rahu and Ketu also joined the company. Rahu and Ketu posed a question, “Who is the most powerful God among us all?” They could not decide this issue by themselves. They went to Lord Indra for his adjudication. Lord Indra equally found himself in a fix. He thought if he gave the judgment in favor of one, others would be displeased with him.
He said, “Respected gods, I am just one among equals. How can I decide this complicated issue? I cannot give an impartial judgment. Better go to planet Earth. Vir Vikramaditya rules over there. He is very logical, judicious and righteous”. Accordingly, they went to King Vikramaditya. King Vikramaditya gave due respect to them and begged for any service. They told him about their mission. Though it was a difficult task, Vikramaditya being a dutiful king, accepted it gracefully. Vikramaditya decided that he would not pronounce his verdict directly. He, therefore, arranged seven beautiful thrones.
These thrones were made of gold, silver, bronze, brass, tin, zinc, mica and iron respectively. The gold throne was placed at number one and the iron one at the end. Vikramaditya requested the seven gods to grace the throne of their own choice. Sun was in the gold chair while Saturn occupied the iron chair.
When the seven gods were in the chairs of their own choice, king Vikramaditya said, “You may please decide your own rank now according to the order to your throne. I have not thrust my judgment upon you”. Saturn could see now through the clever judgment of Vikramaditya. He stood up and said, “King Vikramaditya, you have ranked me the lowest among the seven gods. You do not realize my power. Sun can stay on a zodiac or ‘Rashi’ for one month and two and a quarter part of a day, Mars for one and a half months and Jupiter for thirteen months. Mercury and Venus can reign a zodiac for one month only. The Rahu and Ketu move in opposite directions and pass through a zodiac in eighteen months only”.
“It is only I who can reign a zodiac from two and a half years to seven and a half years. Even powerful gods tremble at my sight. When I was angry with Rama, he got exile instead of a throne. Ravana’s family was destroyed by me when I ruled over his zodiac. Now be prepared. It is your turn”. After a short time, an inauspicious period of seven and a half years was occupied by Saturn on king Vikramaditya’s zodiac. He visited Vikramaditya’s capital as a horse trader. He had very attractive black horses with him. When the king came to know about the strange horses, he sent for the Ashavapaal (groom) to buy the best horse for him. The groom selected one horse.
The king was so pleased to see the horse that he could not resist himself from riding it and giving it a kick. He had hardly gone on the horse for a few seconds when it disappeared in the air with a great speed. In no time, the king found himself all alone in a deep and thick forest. He loitered here and there, but of no avail. He then met a cowboy. The cowboy arranged some water for the king and helped him quench his thirst. The king gave him his golden ring. The king ultimately reached a nearby city and met a respectable businessman. The businessman felt pity on him and arranged food for him. He earned high profits by the grace of Saturn and took ‘king’ as a lucky visitor and kept him as a head cashier.
Next day, the businessman took him to his house. The ‘king’ saw a precious necklace hanging by a peg. To his great surprise, he saw the peg swallowing the necklace. He could not explain it to the businessman. The businessman took him for a thief and presented him before the court. The court ordered that the king’s hands and feet be cut with one stroke of a sword. An executor carried out these orders. The ‘king’ was now without hands and feet. A ‘Teli’ (oil seed crusher) felt pity on him and brought him to his house. He dressed the ‘king’s’ wounds and made him capable of driving the bullocks around the grinding machine with loud voice.
Time passed on. The inauspicious period of seven and a half years was about to be over. The ‘king’ thought of singing the Malhar Raga on a rainy day. His powerful voice broke the silence of the night. The princess was thrilled to hear the song in her bedroom. She got fascinated towards the singer. The princess sent her personal attendant to know about the singer. The attendant was told that the singer was a help to the Teli and without hands and feet. Even then she decided that she would marry that man or would remain unmarried throughout her life. She conveyed her decision to her parents. The parents resented the decision.
To register her protest, she put on ordinary clothes and moved to a special chamber or Kopa Bhawan and lay down on an ordinary carpet. The king and the queen ultimately bowed before the princess’s decision and said, “If such is your fate, we are reconciled to it”. The king sent for the Teli and said, “Arrange for the marriage of this handicapped help of yours with the princess”. The Teli did not believe his ears and took it as a joke. The king resented his behavior and said, “Do not take it as a joke. This is our final decision”. On an auspicious day, the princess’s marriage with that handicapped person was solemnized. That was the last inauspicious day of the king.
It was a honeymoon night. At mid-night, the king had a small nap. Saturn visited the king in his dream and said, “You ranked me the lowest among the gods. You have undergone enough sufferings for your misjudgment”. The king begged his pardon and said “Please do not inflict such sufferings in future on anyone as you have inflicted upon me”. The Saturn accepted the king’s request and disappeared. The king opened his eyes and, to his great surprise, found his hands and feet in proper shape. The princess’s joy knew no bounds when she saw her husband in perfect shape. Next day, the king also felt as happier.
And when the king came to know that his son-in-law was no one else but king Vikramaditya himself, he was overwhelmed with joy and praised his stars. The businessman got this news and felt guilty over his behavior towards Vikramaditya. He invited him for dinner. King Vikramaditya said, “I shall dine in the same room where the peg swallowed your precious necklace.” The businessman agreed and arranged the dinner in that room. When the invitees were dining, they saw to their great surprise that the precious necklace was slowly emerging from the same peg.
The businessman was so much overwhelmed at this sight that he, too, decided to marry off his daughter to Vikramaditya. King Vikramaditya returned to his kingdom. He and his two queens were received with full warmth by the subjects. The king asked his courtiers to make a proclamation by the beat of drum that Saturn is not less powerful than any other god and that they should keep fast on Saturday as a mark of honor of Saturn. Also, they should feed the ants, both in the morning and evening.
Shanivar ki Kahani – III
Once there were two sisters, Lakshmi and Daridra. Lakshmi was the goddess of wealth while Daridra was the goddess of poverty. Though they were real sisters, their behavior towards others and temperament was totally different. Lakshmi got up early in the morning. She took her bath regularly. She remembered God regularly. She took keen interest in her day-to-day work with a smiling face. She befriended everybody and worked till late at night. On the other hand, Daridra was very lazy. She got up very late. She did not take her bath. Washing clothes was a rare occasion for her. She was very discourteous. She was as much a flirt and unthoughtful. Cruelty and awe were natural to her. She generally told lies and befooled others. She was always hated by men in the street.
Goddess Lakshmi was very much liked by Lord Krishna and he married her happily. Daridra remained alone. She became sad. One day Lakshmi said to Lord Krishna, “My dear husband, Daridra is my real sister. She is alone. Now she is quite grown up. Please arrange for her marriage. The life of an unmarried woman is difficult in our society”. Lord Krishna said, “My love, your worry is justified. But who will accept her in marriage? Her way of living is hated by one and all. She wears shabby clothes and loiters away her time. Even an ordinary man will not take her hand”.
Lakshmi said, “Arrange her marriage with a Rishi. He would not expect much from her because most of his time he would be busy performing religious rites”. Lord Krishna agreed. He searched for a suitable match for Daridra. A Rishi agreed to marry her. Most of the Rishi’s disciples were away. He needed someone’s help in performing the ‘Yajna’. Goddess Lakshmi was happy that a Rishi had accepted her sister’s hand. After performing her marriage, they returned to their kingdom. Daridra could not accept Rishi’s way of life. She would get up late. She would not take her bath.
She would not care for the cleanliness of the Ashram. The Rishi was fed up with her indolence. He gave her up. Daridra was badly disappointed. She went to Lakshmi again. She looked very shabby and disorderly. Lakshmi felt pity for her. She said to Krishna, “Please arrange a suitable abode for her. A woman’s life without a suitable abode is difficult. I knew that habits die hard but she has a right to live in this world”. Lord Krishna accepted Lakshmi’s request. All the three came down to earth together. Krishna spotted out a Peepal tree in a lonely corner. They went to that tree.
Lord Krishna said to Daridra, “You can reside under this tree. This is a lonely place suited to your temperament. You need not clean this place daily. None would visit this place either. You may live as you please”. Daridra said, “I will be fed up with lonely life. Lonely place is an abode of ghosts. Please do visit me frequently with my sister, Lakshmi”. Lord Krishna agreed. He gave a word to her that he would visit and stay at the Peepal tree on every Saturday along with Lakshmi. From that day onwards, people visit Peepal tree on every Saturday. They water it and offer their prayers, knowing well that Lord Krishna and Lakshmi reside in the tree on Saturdays.

Shanivar Vrat Ki Vidhi (शनिवार व्रत)
Shanivar Vrat Ki Vidhi (शनिवार व्रत की विधि): This lent is observed to remove the bad influence of Sadhe Sati dosha time and Critical Time of life.
Shanivar Vrat Puja Vidhi:
This day Lord Saturn(Shani) is worshiped. Lord Saturn is fond of black sesame, black dress, iron, oil and black lentil (Moong). After reading the spell of Lord Shani above materials are to be donated to the Brahmins.
Legend of Shanivar Vrat:
Rukmini(Shanivar Vrat Ki Vidhi) was the wife of Lord Krishna. She had a younger sister who was not only harsh but also having ill attitude. Hence no prince was ready to marry her. One day Rukmini requested lord Krishna to arrange a bridegroom for her younger sister Kulakshmi .
Lord Krishna got her married to a hermit. The hermit was a great soul. He was always busy with his pray and worship and so he could not give much of time to Kulakshmi. So Kulakshmi could not get any opportunity to create mess. But during the evening time when her husband after completing the worship used to blow the conch, she used to cry to loudly with profusely flowing the tears. This activity made her husband unhappy (Shanivar Vrat Ki Vidhi).
Ultimately one day the hermit asked Kulakshmi, “Lady, What thing pleases you? The thing on which you are comfortable with, please tell me, I will arrange for that.”
Kulakshmi replied, “My lord, I hate all of your activities and performances. Worship, pray, sacrifices all are useless to me. I like round the time problems of the people. I feel happy when I see people are in distress. They are tortured and facing many problems.” Hearing the wife’s wish the hermit said,” Well come with me. I will take you to that place where you will be comfortable.”
Kulakshmi went happily with her husband(Shanivar Vrat Ki Vidhi). The hermit took her to a dense forest. He searched a tall peepal tree and on the top of the branch he made her sit over there and left her alone and returned to his hermitage .
At mid-night Kulakshmi started crying. At the same time Rukmini was offering dinner to her husband. She heard the weeping sound of her sister Kulakashmi(Shanivar Vrat Ki Vidhi). She told her husband tauntingly that you have well arranged a bridegroom for my sister. The hermit left her in the forest. Listen how pathetically she is weeping .
Hearing Rukmini’s accusitation, Lord Krishna said,” My dear lady, your sister is a devil. She used to put obstacles on her husband’s worship and pray. He might have left with no other alternative than to leave her in the forest. In this world good people are accompanied by all but no one goes with bad people.” Saturday Fast.
Then Rukmini again prayed to Lord and told, “How will she spend her days? Make some arrangements for her.”
Hearing her, Lord Krishna went to the place wherein Kulakshmi was crying by sitting on the topmost branch of the peepal tree(Shanivar Vrat Vidhan). He asked her that why she was weeping. Kulakshmi told him that the hermit had left her there. She was scared of loneliness. So she was crying. Hearing this Lord Krishna said, “She might have created problems for him and putting hurdles in his worship etc. and for that reason only he might have left her. He cannot pressurize the hermit now to take you back. But if you are ready to take vow that you will not disturb him in future, I can think something for you.
Hearing this Kulakshmi told,” I am agreeable to all your conditions, but I am bound to my nature.
On this Lord Krishna told, “For this type of quarrelsome person living in solitude is the only way. So my order is that you live in this Peepal tree forever. Peepal tree is the abode of all god and goddesses. My wife Lakshmi also lives in the Peepal tree(Shanivar Vrat Ki Vidhi). On Saturdays who will worship Peepal tree(Shanivar Vrat Ki Vidhi) before sunset it will reach Lakshmi but who will worship after sunset, it will reach to you. Saying this Lord Krishna returned.
Shanivar Vrat Vidhan

Saturday Fast Benefits, Importance, Procedure
Observing a Fast and Its Meaning
Fasting is the practice of refraining from eating a certain type of food as a form of worship or prayer. You can benefit spiritually and physically from fasting, and it allows you to communicate with your favourite deity. Your internal and exterior pollutants are cleansed. Additionally known as Upavas or Vrat, it can aid in system cleansing and boost metabolic function.
The Value of the Seven Week Days
each of the seven workdays is named after a planet and represents that planet. Thus, the Moon is represented by Monday, Mars by Tuesday, Mercury by Wednesday, Jupiter by Thursday, Venus by Friday, Saturn by Saturday, and the Sun by Sunday. Additionally, particular deities are honoured on certain days of the week. It is thought that making earnest prayers to that particular deity and the planetary god on his or her special weekday will delight the deity and assist in receiving their abundant gifts.
Saturday and Planet Saturn
The Hindu pantheon’s Saturn continues to be one of its most dreaded deities. People worship Shani to lessen the severity of his bad impacts, as opposed to praying to Gods to get respite from other problems. Shani is the name of the planet Saturn, and Shanivar is the name of Saturn’s birthday on Saturday. This sluggish planet is associated with austerity, longevity, mindfulness and meditation, discipline, and limitations, but it also particularly connotes old age, illness, misery, and even death. It also possesses the ability to hinder and destroy. He receives the name Shaneeshwara and the epithet Eshwara from the almighty Lord Shiva himself because of this. Lord Shiva and his incarnation, Hanuman, are the planet Saturn’s governing deities, and Saturdays are set aside for their adoration.
The Myth of Saturday Fasting
The question of which of the nine planets was the most powerful once came up. Vikramaditya, the intelligent monarch of Ujjain, was asked to decide the dispute. In order to accommodate all of the planetary Gods, Vikramaditya crafted nine thrones out of various metals, including gold, silver, bronze, copper, brass, tin, zinc, mica, and iron. Shani was left to hold the vacant iron throne while other planets rushed to claim the thrones constructed of higher metals. The king then declared that the planet’s power matched the standard of the throne he had just assumed. Because he was made to sit on the throne made of iron, the most common metal, Shani felt betrayed by the king’s choice and resolved to pay him back. And the king’s problems got really bad.
A few days later, Vikramaditya, who had gone hunting in the forest, got lost, ran out of food, wandered into another area, was apprehended and accused of stealing by the locals, and as a punishment, had his hands and feet amputated. Nevertheless, he was able to land a work as an oil seed crusher, and he was living his life stoically, with prayers and a strong belief in God. Because of this, Shani showed him forgiveness and lifted his curse. After the rough period was over, Vikramaditya was able to restore his limbs, marry the princess of that country, and return to his realm to a heartfelt reception from the populace. Knowing the significance and authority of Lord Shani, because of whose curse he had to suffer terribly for seven and half years, Vikramaditya began worshipping Shani and observing the Shanivar Vrat.
Another intriguing mythology links Hanuman and Shani. After being cursed by Lord Brahma, Shani was imprisoned before being finally set free by a Lord Shiva avatar. Later, Hanuman went in pursuit of Sita in Lanka, discovered her there, engaged in combat with the local demons, tormented them, and finally set fire to Lanka. He discovered Shani being held captive by Ravana just before leaving. Hanuman, a manifestation of Shiva, rescued the planetary God and carried him to freedom on his shoulders. To Hanuman’s great joy, Lord Shani bestowed the blessing that his followers would not endure any of Shani’s negative effects.
Process for fasting on Saturday
Saturday fasting, known as Shanivar Vrat, is performed from morning until dusk. After breaking their fast and praying to Shani, devotees eat one meal. Black is the colour associated with Saturn and Saturday, hence foodstuffs are frequently made of black gramme, sesame (til), or other similar dark-coloured ingredients. On this day, salt is typically avoided. Lord Shiva, Hanuman, and Shaneeshwara are prayed to while reciting mantras and studying holy books. They also go to Shani-related temples or shrines. When offerings of black gramme, til oil, and sesame seeds are made, special worship is conducted. Some people donate black clothing and umbrellas to charities. Beginning the fast on the first Saturday of the Shukla Paksha, or the waxing moon fortnight, in the Shravan month (July–August), which corresponds to the Tamil month Aadi, is said to be auspicious. There are also enthusiasts who keep up this fasting without stopping for 11 or even 51 Saturdays.
Benefits of Saturday fasting
Shanivar Vrats have a great chance of reducing or eliminating Saturn’s unfavourable impacts.
Worshipping Lord Shiva, who is revered as Shani’s Guru, helps lessen suffering and ill fortune
Praying to Hanuman can help one get rid of the negative energy brought on by the Saturn impact because Shani is still grateful to him for his amazing assistance.
Observing this Vrat during the seven-and-a-half-year Saturn cycle, which is also a trying time for Sade Sati, would bring about a lot of relief.
A birth chart with a weak Saturn, Saturn Dasa Bhukti, or a debilitated Saturn can also be lessened by observing the Shanivar fast.

(Shani Dev Vrat Katha)
(Shanivar Vrat Vidhi)
Shani Dev Vrat Story
Shani Dev plays an important role in the life of every person, if Shani is in the best position in the horoscope, then it gives great success to the person in a very short time. Therefore, Shani should be pleased by making every effort.
Once upon a time, all the Navagrahas Sun, Moon, Mars, Buddha, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu got into a dispute. Who is the most powerful among them? Everyone started fighting among themselves, and when there was no conclusion, they all reached to Devraj Indra to make a solution. Indra was frightened by this, and expressed his inability to deliver this decision. He said that at present there is King Vikramaditya on earth, who is very just. Only they can decide it. All the planets together reached King Vikramaditya, and told their dispute. Also asked for the decision.
