Everything You Need to Know About the Root Chakra

The chakras are the seven centers of energy that move through your subtle body, starting at the crown of your head and traveling down to the base of your spine.

When spinning properly, each chakra allows energy to flow through the body.

However, if one of these wheels is blocked, your well-being can suffer.

The first chakra, muladhara, or “root chakra,” acts as the root of the body.

If your root chakra is out of alignment, you may feel depressed, anxious, or even constipated (sorry).

The natural element of the root chakra: earth

The first chakra, called muladhara, is located at the base of the spine. “Muladhara” means root, and is associated with the earth element, linked to your ability to dig in and feel firmly rooted in your life. Its associated color is red, hence its links to the earth.

This energy center is associated with your sense of security, familial relationships and your feeling of home, says Stephanie Snyder, a yoga teacher based in San Francisco. When energy is flowing through the first chakra, you feel firmly grounded in yourself and the world around you.

Signs of blocked muladhara energy

Physical signs

When your first chakra is out of alignment, you may experience pain in your intestines and lower body.

This misalignment can manifest in the physical body in a number of ways.

Mental signs

When working with the root chakra, think about your relationship to yourself and the world around you.

Where do you feel grounded?

When do you feel calm and stable?

  • Increased distractibility
  • Rushing from one task to another
  • Feeling exhausted or lethargic
  • Increased feelings of anxiety, stress or depression
  • Feeling stuck
  • Inability to take action

Reasons to align your root chakra

You’ll feel grounded and comfortably situated in your body and the world around you.

Stress about your sense of place and belonging will dissipate.

Root Chakra Healing: Techniques to Activate, Unblock, and Balance

When you hear the word “root” you might picture a plant with a sturdy stalk that tethers it to the Earth below.

Some traditions claim that, like plants, humans also have a force that grounds us: the root chakra.

This wheel-like energy center in the human body is believed by some to be the foundation on which the entire chakra system is based.

Some energy healers even say that to balance the other chakras in the body, you must heal the root chakra first.

So what is the root chakra, what can it do, and does it even exist? Read on to find out.

What is the root chakra?

First, let’s start with the chakras themselves.

The chakras are one small part of a complex and nuanced spiritual and religious tradition that originates in India.

These energy centers were first mentioned in ancient spiritual texts known as the Vedas dating back as far as 1500 to 100 BC.

They’re believed to be wheel-like vortices that play an important role in the balance of energy in the body, affecting health, self-expression, and even how you perceive reality.

Still, it’s worth noting that there’s no scientific evidence to support their existence.

So, how does the root chakra fit in?

“The root chakra is the driving force that gives us the energy to live our daily lives and accomplish physical achievements,” says Dirish Shaktidas, a yoga teacher and chakra healer who blends Eastern philosophy with esoteric practices. “I liken it to the long, deep, roots of a tree hidden under the Earth.”

Known as muladhara in Sanskrit, it’s the first chakra in the human body.

“The root chakra is where everything begins,” says Cristi Christensen, author of “Chakra Rituals: Awakening the Wild Woman Within.”

“It’s the root from which true health, well-being, and empowerment grows.

It’s the foundation on which our physical and energetic body and every chakra is built upon.”

The root chakra is believed to be found between the perineum and the lower spine.

Due to its location, it’s sometimes linked to the adrenal glands and the anus.

Its characteristics include:

  • represented by the color red
  • linked to the Earth element
  • situated at the base of the spine
  • linked to feelings of security, safety, and survival

A balanced root chakra is linked to:

  • focus and presence
  • feeling stable and secure
  • a healthy survival instinct
  • dependability, reliability, and responsibility
  • a sense of belonging
  • feeling grounded and connected to self and others
  • the ability to care for yourself
  • the drive to live

What does root chakra imbalance look like?

When the chakras become blocked or imbalanced, the flow of energy is said to be impeded. When it comes to the root chakra, you might experience fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and a sense that you’re not at home in your own skin.

Imbalance is believed by some to impact health and well-being in several ways, including:

Physical issues

  • difficulty sleeping
  • constipation and bowel issues
  • weight gain or loss
  • weakened immunity
  • fatigue
  • issues in the lower body, including the lower back, legs, feet, knees, and the base of the spine

Emotional issues

  • feeling unsafe, unstable, anxious, and fearful
  • feeling ungrounded or even dissociated
  • erratic behavior
  • depression and lack of motivation
  • living in “survival mode”
  • negativity and cynicism

Spiritual issues

  • inability to trust in the Earth to support and nourish you
  • doubt about your place in the universe
  • existential crisis or crisis of faith
  • loss of will

“When the root chakra is functioning on a low expression, we can feel ungrounded, unreliable, unable to be practical, and be in avoidance of getting things done,” says Shaktidas.

Without the grounding energy of a balanced root chakra, Shaktidas says you may lack a sense of belonging and may lose interest in being a part of the world.

“When our survival and well-being are threatened, cortisol floods the body to prepare for fight or flight,” says Christensen.

If we’re constantly faced with high levels of stress or trauma, it’s possible.  to become imbalanced.”

There are several ways to activate, balance, and unblock the root chakra, according to tradition.

These include:

  • movement
  • sound
  • meditation
  • ritual
  • affirmations
  • breathwork
  • touch

Root Chakra – Muladhara

The root chakra is the first chakra and is located at the base of the spine.

It is the root of your being and establishes the deepest connections with your physical body, your environment and with the Earth.

Muladhara is the most instinctual of all chakras – it is your survival center. Your fight and flight response is initiated from this chakra.

This is your primal, animal nature.

The energy of Muladhara allows us to harness courage, resourcefulness and the will to live during trying times.

It connects us with spiritual energies of our ancestors, their challenges and their triumphs.

Since base chakra carries our ancestral memories, basically everyone experiences challenges or blockages within muladhara.

War, famine, natural disasters, and any events that threaten our basic survival, are all recorded within energies of the first chakra.

These memories are imprinted in the subtle body and are passed down from generation to generation creating unconscious generational patterns.

It is our work to take responsibility for our own lives and bring to light that which is unconscious.

All of the seven chakras are important and interconnected with each other. Usually, balancing one chakra will create change in another chakra.

It is important though to balance the root chakra first, before we proceed to others, or we will lack the stability and rootedness necessary for true transformation and personal growth.

We cannot grow and change unless we feel safe and secure.

What is Root Chakra?

The root chakra is the first of 7 chakras present at the base of the spine in our subtle body.

Being the first and base chakra, the energy of this chakra works like the foundation for all the above chakras.

In Sanskrit, the root chakra is known as Muladhara.

The term Muladhara comes from the prefix mula, meaning “root,” and adhara, meaning “support” or “base.”

It’s called Muladhara because the development of this chakra begins at the conception date and it provides a supportive foundation to develop the spine and other body organs.

When you feel a sense of instability for the basic survival needs like food and shelter or you don’t trust anyone other than yourself only, it indicates the problem in your root chakra.

The root chakra is an instinctual energy center.

It means everything we need to survive and evolve on this earth like a sense of safety and security (fight-flight, or freeze response), our basic needs, and emotional needs are initiated from the root chakra.

When these instinctual needs are met, root chakra happens in its balanced form and you feel grounded and safe.

Where exactly is root chakra located?

The root chakra is located in the pelvic floor, exactly at the tailbone, where 3 vertebrae fuse to produce a triangular shape area.

In the subtle body, your root chakra present at the center of this small area.

Physically you can be aware of root chakra location by placing your hands (finger pointing downwards) at the tailbone.

The point where your downward-pointing little finger touches the pelvic floor is the location of your root chakra.

In females, the location of the root chakra consists in the center of the anus and vagina.

It lies posterior to the genital organ i.e. cervix.

While in males, this chakra occupies the area above the perineum or lies inside it.

What is the color of root chakra?

The color of energy that radiates from the root chakra is red.

It’s because this chakra has the closest vicinity to the earth element and the red color shows a reflection of the earth’s inner surface and core.

The reason for the red color of the root chakra is that red is the color of energy and determination that stimulates the limbic system of the brain.

The limbic system governs behavior we need for survival: feeding, reproduction, and fight or flight response.

Moreover, the red color also denotes how much we are connected to the earth. Being connected to earth means how well you are aware of yourself.

The more you aware of yourself, the more you would come to know how less your basic needs are and this is what the work of a balanced root chakra is.

What does root chakra symbol shows?

The symbol of root chakra contains 4 simple components; downward-pointing triangle, square, lotus petals and text lam at the center.

  • Downward-pointing triangle – It points towards the earth and home of kundalini shakti present in this chakra. Also, the downward arrow reminds us to be grounded and connected to the earth.
  • Square inscribed in a circle – Square shown in the root chakra symbol is the representation of a firm foundation to support everything. Earth being the element of root chakra provides us that firm foundation.
  • Lotus flower 4 petals – 4 lotus petals represents the connection between Nadis and chakras. It indicates the merging of 4 nerves (Nadis) at the root chakra. These 4 Nadis in the symbol represented with 4 Sanskrit syllables वं (vaṃ), शं (śaṃ), षं (ṣaṃ), and सं (saṃ).
  • Text लं on the center – “Lam” is the ‘Bija Mantra’ (seed mantra) of the root chakra. Its sound has the power to stimulate the earth element and so the root chakra.

Some textual reference shows the symbol of root chakra with an elephant picture within the square. The elephant is a representation of mother earth bearing the weight and hence symbolizes the inner strength associated with this chakra.

The number of external agencies can influence it but simultaneously some little efforts are enough to balance it.

You can follow the following practices if you are facing any problems associated with the root chakra.

1. Do Meditation with Mantras and Mudras

One of the common causes of the disturbed root chakra is when you are not grounded, in both senses physically and psychologically.

Meditation, besides, introducing you to your inner dimension, also helps you to connect with the ground.

Although many meditation practices are available to bring your root energy in balance but a focused seated asana with mantra chant and mudras for meditation is the easiest one.

Choose a silent place and follow this small meditation practice to balance your root chakra.

  • Sit in padmasana (lotus pose). Make Gyan mudra or Earth mudra with your hands.
  • Bring your awareness down at the physical location of the root chakra and imagine a connection establishing between the pelvic floor and earth.
  • To make the connection more effective, chant the seed mantra ‘Lam‘ vocally or subvocally. Vibrations induced out of mantra chanting stimulates root energy and thus balancing becomes easier.
  • As the nose is the sense of organ of the root chakra, you can also meditate on the nose tip in seated asana to balance root energy.

2. Ground yourself with yoga poses

Physical exercise is another simplest approach you can opt to bring your root energy in balance.

In yoga, asana balances ease and effort and thus, a better alternate of physical exercises.

A few yoga poses which focus on energy associated with the root chakra are Pavanamuktasana (wind-relieving pose), padmasana (lotus pose), malasana (garland pose), tadasana (mountain pose), and virabhadrasana 2 (warrior pose 2).

You can practice yoga poses on green grass to feel more connected to the ground.

It balances root chakra energy by strengthening lower legs, thighs, enhances hips mobility, and relieves back pain.

3. Harness the energy of stones

Some stones and crystals have the vibrating frequency to restore the balance of your Root Chakra. The root chakra vibrates at the lowest frequency of 396Hz.

Since the Muladhara Chakra is linked with Red Colour, Red-colored stones are resonant with Root Chakra.

These are Red Jasper, Bloodstone, and Red Carnelian. With each stone possessing different characteristics, their symbolic significance on the Root Chakra is also different.

  • You can wear Red Carnelian for Root Chakra which represents strength & courage and is used to cleanse & activate the Chakra.

  • Bloodstone for Root Chakra is suitable for you if you have shrunk your self-esteem and are working towards pushing the negative vibes out of you.

4. Nourish yourself with green veggies

Since the deficiency in Root Chakra is caused due to less interaction with the earth, whether directly or indirectly. It is time you tasted some earthly delights to balance your first wheel.

You can add green and root vegetables to your diet plan to start over a restoration chapter. Some of the vegetables are Beets, onion, Garlic, Tomatoes, Potatoes, carrots, radishes, and beetroots.

This state can only be achieved through Meditation, Correct Mudras, wearing suitable Stones, and following earthly red foods.

ot Chakra Healing For Complete Beginners

The root chakra is one of the most blocked and constricted energy fields within our bodies.

Everyone, at some point in their lives, has struggled with a root chakra deficiency. If you were raised in a dangerous neighborhood, experienced the divorce of your parents, had parents who struggled to pay the rent, lived in relative poverty, and/or were smacked or abused as a child, you likely have an impaired root chakra.

I’ll explore with you how to undergo root chakra healing in this article.

(You can also check out our Grounding & Cleansing Chakra Bundle if you’d like to work with the root chakra more deeply after reading this guide.)

What is the Root Chakra?

The root chakra, or Muladhara, is our body’s most primal and fundamental energy center, being located at the base of our spine, or groin area. Being associated with the color red, the root chakra regulates the energy associated with instinct, survival, and safety.

When the root chakra is imbalanced due to trauma, psychological issues such as chronic fear, and psychosomatic suppression and repression, we experience a disruption in the flow of life. Often our blocked energy centers lead to constant personal, existential and relationship issues.

What is Root Chakra Healing?

Root Chakra healing is the practice of opening, clearing, cleansing, supporting and strengthening the root chakra within our bodies. Root Chakra healing involves using certain foods, sounds, smells, affirmations, yoga practices, healing crystals, and other holistic remedies to reestablish harmony within the body-mind organism.

15 Signs of an Unhealthy Root Chakra

The best way to tell whether you need to undergo root chakra healing is to pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, actions and physical sensations within your body.

Here are some signs to look out for:

  • You tend to obsess about money, e.g. you worry that you don’t have enough, you have catastrophic thoughts that surround going poor and becoming homeless, you over-work to soothe your anxiety surrounding finances, you become triggered whenever someone in your family spends too much, YOU must be in absolute control of the money in your family, etc.
  • You have a general mistrust of others (trust issues)
  • You believe that the only person you can rely on is yourself, and you avoid asking favors from others (even when you really need them)
  • You’re a workaholic who tends to burn out easily
  • You have a dysfunctional relationship with your family
  • You feel like there’s “never enough” to go around and you need to fight for what you want
  • You’re terrified of a loss of control
  • You are hyper vigilant to any perceived signs of threat from others or your surroundings
  • You feel dizzy, anxious, spacey, and ungrounded for most of the day
  • You find it difficult and scary to be your authentic self around others
  • You feel disconnected from other people and nature
  • You are a hoarder who likes to “collect” a lot of things making your living space constricted and cluttered
  • You binge-eat or stop eating completely when you get depressed or anxious
  • You have leg and feet problems, such as swelling, infection, cramps, poor circulation
  • You tend to gain weight around the bottom half of your body (e.g. love handles, thick thighs)

How many of these signs can you identify with, in this list?

Do You Have a Deficient or Excessive Root Chakra?

When most people talk about unhealthy root chakras, they’re referring to “blocked” or deficient chakras that restrict energy flow.

But did you know that your chakras can also be excessive — or overactive?

So what is the difference between a deficient and excessive root chakra? Essentially, a deficient root chakra can be defined as passive, whereas an excessive root chakra can be defined as aggressive.

Here’s a breakdown:

Deficient = lifeless, sluggish, passive, blocked, inwards (not enough energy flows in)

Excessive = lively, agitated, reactive, aggressive, outwards (too much energy flows in)

Therefore, if you have a deficient root chakra, you will be more prone to issues such as anxiety, suspicion, and withdrawing. On the other hand, if you have an excessive root chakra you will be prone to hoarding, workaholism, greed, and anger.

Deficiency protects, whereas excessiveness overcompensates.

So the question is, which do you have?

It’s also possible to fall somewhere in the middle.

17 Root Chakra Healing Practices

So what does a healthy and balanced root chakra look and feel like?

When you have a clear, strong and harmonious root chakra, you will firstly feel grounded and calm. You will no longer have fears surrounded money or loss of control, but will come to trust the divine intelligence of life. Not only will you trust yourself more, but you will also feel connected to others and nature more deeply. When your root chakra is healthy, you will find it simple to be your authentic self finding the inner peace that is always here in the present moment easier to connect to. You will give up the need to fight, protect and defend, and will instead come into alignment with ebb and flow of life.

Here are some of the best root chakra healing practices out there that I have personally experimented with:

1. Listen to grounding music

I recommend the sound of thunder, Mongolian throat singing or the didgeridoo (an indigenous Australian instrument).

The Ultimate Guide to Root Chakra Healing For Complete Beginners

2. Chant “LAM” to yourself.

This sound matches the vibration of the root chakra. Try drawing out the letters into sounds, such as “lllllllaaaaaaammmmm.” You might also like to listen to binaural beats (a form of music healing therapy) which helps to activate and clear all the chakras through alternating sound waves. Try these chakra healing songs.

Final Advice

What to do now with all this information?

As someone who has struggled with a severely imbalanced root chakra before, I found that bringing more mindfulness into my days helped immediately and immensely.

Try slowing yourself down, taking more breaks, and connecting with your breath — these are simple and easy first steps you can take.

Afterward, you can implement the other healing practices described above.

We even learned about crystalsessential oils, and foods that can be used to heal the root chakra.

Additional methods of root chakra healing would be Yoga! From Tadasana to Lotus, there are a wide array of asanas that are specifically tied to grounding and rooting back down to the Earth.

The Auric Body associated with the root chakra:

  • The auric body that is directly linked with the root chakra is the Etheric body.
  • The adrenals are also connected to the root chakra.
  • When the body is in fight-or-flight mode it can affect our hormones and cause our root chakra to become blocked.
  • Fight-or-flight mode can be triggered by multiple reasons like fear of change, or not feeling secure.
  • This causes our hormones to not function properly.

Affirmations of the root chakra:

  • “I am a divine being of light.”
  • “I am peaceful, protected, and secure.”
  • “I am always safe.”
  • “I am financially secure.”
  • “The Universe will always provide for me.”

The Root Chakra and Its Red Color Meaning

When you first start learning about chakras, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

After all, the whole idea of chakras and energy healing can seem a little far out there, especially for some people who have never dealt with the subject before.

While it is very real, it takes a bit of time for some individuals to connect.

Rest assured, there is nothing wrong with that.

In order to better understand your root chakra and the color associated with it, you have to first understand what it is and what it’s capable of doing for you.

Only then will you truly be able to start noticing when that particular chakra is opening up for you.

Read on to learn about the first chakra, which is the root chakra, and discover why it’s associated with the color red.

What Is the Root Chakra?

Just as the name implies, the root chakra is the very root of all the other chakras in your body.

As such, it has a direct impact on virtually everything that happens in your body, not to mention the way that you feel on a daily basis.

It can affect how you feel both physically and emotionally.

The root chakra is typically associated with your most basic needs, such as the need to feel safe, the need to be wanted and the desire to have your most basic needs of shelter, food and safety met.

Of course, it also plays a very important role in your spiritual development because it helps you become more balanced.

Once your basic needs for survival are met, the root chakra opens up even further, thereby allowing you to meet your needs on a deeper level.

Where Is It Located?

You can find your root chakra at the base of your spine. It’s in the same area as your tailbone.

When you think about it, it makes sense that the very chakra that you use to stay grounded to the rest of the world would also be located at the base of your spine. You can think of your root chakra as the entryway for your body’s energy.

Everything that comes into your body and everything that goes out of it goes through this gateway.

How Do You Know if Your Root Chakra Is Blocked?

Since the root chakra dictates energy associated with basic needs like survival, you are likely to notice that you have an abundance of fear if this particular chakra becomes blocked.

You might even start to notice that you are having panic attacks when you haven’t had a history of them in the past or that you have a number of deep-seated fears running through your mind that aren’t typical for you.

On the other hand, you might feel a general sense of anxiety or fear about the future.

You may begin to fear for your safety or your well-being as it relates to those basic needs that are associated with the root chakra.

Signs and Symptoms to Look Out For

There are a number of psychological and physical symptoms associated with a root chakra that isn’t open and operating as it should be.

On the psychological side of things, you may tend to lose trust in other people.

A lot of individuals who have a root chakra that isn’t operating properly find that they are always worried about not having enough.

It doesn’t matter if the subject in question is money, food or something else, there is a fear of not having enough of the things that matter most.

This can cause a number of problems in various interpersonal relationships.

It also manifests in a physical sense. Many people with a blocked root chakra either overeat or don’t eat enough.

They may experience significant weight gain, even if they’re not eating more than usual.

If your root chakra is blocked, you might also feel dizzy, have a lot of headaches and find it difficult to focus.

What Color Is Associated With the Root Chakra and Why?

Red is the color that is always associated with the root chakra.

If you stop and think about it, it is easy to understand why.

In almost every culture, red is a symbol of vitality. After all, it is the same color as the very blood that runs through your veins as it gives you life.

Red can also represent love and an innate passion for doing something.

In a less direct sense, it may also represent a sense of protectiveness.

You might have heard the phrase, “when someone gets angry, they see red.”

Obviously, they don’t truly see a red color that just pops up in front of them, at least not in a physical sense.

However, the color red is sometimes associated with anger, even rage.

If you tone that down a little and temper it with love (also represented by the color red), it becomes easier to understand how this color can represent a sense of protectiveness for the people that you love.

When you consider the fact that the root chakra is the very base of all of your needs that must be met in order for you to grow physically, spiritually and emotionally, it only makes sense that red would be the color associated with it.

Your root chakra gives you a sense of protection when it is operating properly.

By the same token, it also allows you to grow emotionally and spiritually so that you can feel love and passion, provided that your basic needs have been met.

As such, the root chakra represents many things.

When you consider the fact that red can symbolize love, protectiveness, passion, life and even rage, it only makes sense that these two would go hand-in-hand.

How Do You Keep Your Root Chakra Balanced?

Fortunately, there are many things that you can do to keep your root chakra balanced.

A good portion of it all involves learning how to better connect with nature.

Of course, you can do that in the way that best suits your needs.

For example, you might decide to plant flowers or go for a hike.

By the same token, it’s just as effective to spend time sitting on your deck with a cup of coffee as you enjoy the sunset.

While much of keeping your root chakra balanced involves being out and about in nature, it doesn’t end there.

You can also open up your root chakra or keep it balanced by listening to music, meditating, and taking time for yourself each day.

If there is a particular activity that makes you feel especially grounded, then it’s a good idea to participate in that activity.

In the end, it’s all about learning to stay grounded as much as possible.

This in turn allows you to make sure that your basic needs are being met and that you are subsequently becoming more adept at meeting your needs on an emotional and spiritual level.

What if You’re Still Struggling?

If you are doing all of the things mentioned in the above paragraph, yet you still feel like your root chakra isn’t fully open, it may be time to try measures that are a bit more involved.

For example, you might decide to keep a journal that focuses specifically on helping you discover what you feel afraid of and why those fears are essentially dominating your life.

If you can put it in writing, it often becomes far more clear.

That gives you an opportunity to truly examine the cause of those fears and then find ways to work through them.

If you’re not sure why you feel afraid, it’s very difficult to address the problem because you don’t know where it’s coming from in the first place.

Last but certainly not least, you might try visualizing yourself without those fears.

Visualization works when it comes to almost every chakra in your body, and the root chakra is no different.

By simply visualizing what your life might be like without experiencing the fears that hold you back, you can go a long way toward beginning to identify and eliminate those fears.

Should You Expect to Completely Rid Yourself of Your Fears?

While you can certainly expect to dramatically reduce the amount of fear that you feel or even the frequency with which these feelings occur, you really shouldn’t expect to completely and permanently rid yourself of anything that makes you uncomfortable.

The truth is, fear isn’t always a bad thing.

It’s really more about the way that you deal with it. When you are in a situation that makes you somewhat fearful, such as when you’re

trying something new that takes you outside of your comfort zone, it helps you grow.

You end up being a stronger person for having accomplished it when it is all said and done.

Sitting around and allowing your mind to race with one fear after another, without any basis in reality is another thing entirely.

These are the types of fears that you need to eliminate because they serve no purpose other than to make your life miserable.

By opening up your root chakra and ensuring that you keep it balanced, you can make these types of fears a thing of the past.

By the way, it will also help you better handle the type of fear that comes with being outside of your comfort zone when you decide to break from your routine.

How Will You Know When Your Root Chakra Starts Opening?

Remember, you have a tendency to feel more fear when your root chakra is blocked. Therefore, it only makes sense that you would also feel the exact opposite when it starts to open.

As a result, you are likely to feel an overwhelming sense of courage.

You might even start to feel bold enough to do things that you wouldn’t have likely done in the past.

It’s also common for you to feel more secure as far as your safety and basic needs are concerned.

Therefore, you might start to look for enlightenment on a higher level by pursuing things that help you grow emotionally and spiritually as opposed to worrying about the most basic of things on a daily basis.

Is It Possible to Heal Your Root Chakra?

As a matter of fact, it is possible to heal your root chakra and every other chakra in your body. It doesn’t typically happen in a single day, nor is it always easy.

It requires effort and dedication on your part.

If your root chakra isn’t open, it can cause a lot of discord in your life that manifests itself in different ways.

Therefore, it’s vitally important to make sure that your root chakra is open and that you keep it that way.

When your root chakra is open, you might feel a great deal of energy in the area near your tailbone.

It’s also worth noting that you might feel this same sense of tingling or heat in your feet whenever your root chakra is opening.

When you consider the fact that this is the chakra that keeps you grounded, it only makes sense that this would occur.

Don’t be surprised if it tingles or if you experience a feeling of gentle heat in the area.

That experience, coupled with newfound security and courage, is usually a good indication that your root chakra is finally open.

Rest assured, if it closes in the future, it is possible to heal it and open it back up.

You can refer back to the techniques that have already been discussed in order to accomplish that goal.

Choosing the Right Color Matters

If you need to heal your root chakra, you might try incorporating its color in conjunction with the techniques that have already been discussed in order to speed things along.

As a result, it may be a good idea to wear a piece of jewelry that is red in color.

You can also choose red clothing or place something red in a room.

When you are visualizing yourself without your fears, you can even visualize the color red coming to sweep all of those fears away and make you strong enough and powerful enough to handle whatever life throws at you.

It’s an effective technique because it allows you to visualize yourself in the environment you want to be in.

Eventually, you create a muscle memory that changes the way that you think.

This in turn changes the energy that you send out into the universe, thereby changing the type of energy that you’re also receiving.

Can an Open Root Chakra Give You More Self-Confidence?

There is no doubt that an open root chakra can help you feel more self-confidence and a greater sense of self-esteem. Unfortunately, people that don’t have a great deal of self-esteem usually find that their root chakra is blocked.

The same is true of someone who suffers from a diminished sense of self-worth.

This person may struggle to get along with others because they walk into a room immediately assuming that they won’t fit in to begin with.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, work on the techniques that have been discussed herein.

Doing so can help you open your root chakra.

As previously mentioned, it’s also a good idea to wear something that is red in color or surround yourself with something red, as this can empower you to better connect with your root chakra.

This in turn makes it easier to heal it and keep it open.

Final Thoughts on the Root Chakra

At the end of the day, it is important to remember that everyone experiences certain challenges when it comes to keeping all of their chakras open, including the root chakra. Even the most grounded individual is likely to experience times when it simply isn’t as open as it is at other times.

By the same token, stressful situations that you have absolutely no control over can also affect your root chakra.

If you’ve been through something that is extremely stressful, you might not be feeling as sure of yourself as you were before.

This is especially true if the event you had no control over was life-changing.

Even if you have always prided yourself on keeping your root chakra open, this is a time when it would be a good idea to practice exercises specifically designed to heal it and ensure that it is completely open.

Otherwise, you could end up finding that it closes off a little more each day until you have to put in additional time and effort in order to get things back on track.

Regardless of the situation, incorporating the color red into your routine can help keep things balanced.

 What does Root Chakra mean?

The root chakra is said in yoga to be a wheel of energy located at the base of the spine. It is the first and lowest of the seven primary chakras.

It is believed to include in its circle of prana, or life force energy, the bottom three vertebrae of the spine, as well as the bladder and colon.

Its activation point is on the perineum.

The Sanskrit name for root chakra is muladhara.

Explains Root Chakra

The root chakra is associated with the color red and is responsible for one’s feeling of basic trust.

The root chakra corresponds to the energy of survival and existence; hence, yogic teaching emphasizes the importance of balancing this chakra.

If the root chakra is in balance, it is believed to promote good digestion and masculine sexual function.

If it is out of balance, it is thought to cause problems such as lower back pain, depression, fatigue and anemia. Lack of balance in this chakra can also be associated with digestive issues such as constipation.

The bija mantra associated with the nabhi chakra is Lam, and chanting Lam is thought to be one way of bringing the root chakra back into balance.

There are also certain postures in yoga believed to help activate and balance the root chakra.

These include mountain pose and savasana.

Physical exercise and deep sleep are also said to stimulate the root chakra.
