“God’s light is within you, It never leaves you.”

The Story of Mangala or Mars

A cycle of creation coincides with the day of Brahma, the Creator. When the Lord sleeps, there is a phase of Annihilation and total inactivity. Another cycle begins as the Lord wakes and engages Himself in the process of creation. Countless such cycles go on incessantly extending beyond beginning and end.

There was naught else but water before the beginning of the new cycle of Creation. When Lord Brahma got up at the end of His night, He found all existence non-existent. There was no light, no wind and no motion, only a limitless body of water which was the body of Lord Himself. The Lord had engulfed even the Mother-Earth, the support for all life-forms, into His abdomen at the beginning of His slumber. He thought of creating the Universe once again.

From His own body, Brahma the Creator produced Swayambhuva Manu and his consort Shatarupa. He then bade Manu to beget progeny through the sexual process. Lord Brahma had earlier produced His children through mental activity but they could not effectively populate the earth. Manu agreed to do his father’s bidding but needed some land to settle on. He thus requested Brahma, his father, to retrieve the Mother-Earth from the bosom of the immense Ocean.

Lord Brahma concentrated on the import of His son’s request.

“Even while I am engaged in the process of Creation,” He pondered, “Vasundhara, the Mother-Earth, lies somewhere at the bottom of this Ocean. Some means there must be to retrieve Her. What should I do about it?”

Even as Lord Brahma was immersed in deep thought, a tiny youngone of a boar, not larger than the distal phalanx of His thumb, emerged from His nostrils and in no time acquired the size of an elephant, dangling in the empty space. Manu as well as the rishis gathered there were astonished and offered prayers to this manifestation which they considered as a blessing from the Almighty Lord. Soon this Boar attained the dimensions of a huge mountain and started roaring with great force. This was the ‘Varaaha’ or the ‘Boar’ incarnation which the Lord had acquired in order to retrieve the Earth from the bottom of the Ocean.

The mighty Varaaha smelt for the Earth with His snout in all directions. Then, with a heavy thud, He jumped into the water, as if tearing through the very abdomen of the Ocean, creating a terrible sound. He pierced through the endless body of water and found the all-sustaining Earth resting at the bottom of the Ocean. On His jaws He lifted the Earth, even as an elephant adorns his head with a bunch of flowers, and brought Her to the surface.

There He placed her on the surface of water to float like a lotus-leaf. It is said that the serpent-king Shesha-naga supports the Earth from below lest it should tumble over. Lord Varaaha then planted various mountains as well as other geographical features here and there on the surface of the Earth in order to enable Her to sustain life.

The demon-king Hiranyaksha was very powerful. He had attained immense powers through austerities. Intoxicated by his physical might, he tormented the gods who ran helter-skelter in front of him. Looking for a worthy match, he jumped into the Ocean and confronted Varuna, the sea-god. Varuna, however, declined to fight him suggesting that he face Lord Varaaha for an appropriate combat. Hiranyaksha liked the idea and proceeded towards the bottom of the Ocean where Lord Varaaha was engaged in retrieving the Mother-Earth. The demon mocked at the Lord.

“Hey, wild animal, where have you come from?” he roared on seeing Lord Varaaha. “You pig of a godling,” he continued, “you cannot proceed without fighting me.”

Lord Varaaha, however, ignored the demon and brought the Earth to the surface. Having stabilised her on the surface, He engaged the demon in battle and after playfully fighting him He finally killed him with His bare hands.

The Earth, having been established in her orbit, felt relieved and comfortable. In Her immensely beautiful natural form, She approached Lord Varaaha, now in a highly attractive appearance, and sought His physical association. The two together spent one divine year, away from the eyes of the world. They lost all sense of day and night during this period. At the end of one year, Lord Varaaha offered obeisance to Her and parted. By this time, the Earth was pregnant. She gave birth to Mangala and brought the child up with great love. Later, Mangala was given the status of a ‘graha’ or planet by Lord Shiva. Mangala or Mars being the son of the Mother-Earth, is a significator of land, houses, home, soil, earthenware, and even endometrium (the ‘soil’ where the ‘seed’ is sown and progeny results).

Long long ago, Daksha Prajapati, a progenitor of the human race, gave his daughter, Sati, in marriage to Lord Shiva. He, however, soon developed a dislike for his Son-in-law. Once Daksha undertook a grand yajna or sacrifice. Lords Brahma and Vishnu, as well as several exalted rishis, renunciants, gods and celestial beings were invited to the yajna and offered due obeisances and respects. Such a courtesy, however, was not extended to Lord Shiva, who was not even informed about, let alone invited to, the yajna.

Sati, the divine consort of Lord Shiva, saw the Moon-god with his consort Rohini proceeding in a hurry. Through a friend of hers, she came to know that they were going to attend the yajna of Daksha Prajapati. Sati was perplexed.

“My father is conducting a yajna and we have not been informed about it,” she thought. “Even my mother seems to have forgotten me. I should ask Lord Shankara the cause of it.”

She went to Lord Shiva and enquired why He was not inclined to attend the sacrifice being conducted by her father.

The Lord replied in a sweet tone, “Blessed one! Those whom your father considers worthy of respect are already attending the yajna. Dear one!” He continued, “Those who intrude anywhere uninvited suffer humiliation worse
than death.”

Sati was not completely satisfied. She also wanted to find out why her father had not invited her husband, Lord Shiva, the Lord of the gods and the Essence of all yajnas.

“Lord of the three worlds,” she said, “please permit me to go and attend the yajna.”

Lord Shiva was aware of the inevitable future. He permitted Sati to go to her father’s house. When Sati met her father, she enquired why her husband, the Lord of the three worlds, was not invited to the yajna. This infuriated Daksha who spoke thus to Her :

“Dear daughter, you are not really needed here. You may stay here or go away as you please. You have not been invited. Your husband, the so- called Shiva, is an emblem of Amangala (inauspiciousness). He is unclean, unkempt and the lord of the inauspicious spirits. He does not deserve to be invited to a yajna of this stature.”

Sati was deeply hurt at the venom her father had spewed against her beloved husband. Unable to tolerate this humiliation, she jumped into the sacrificial fire and died.

When Shankara got the news of His wife’s death in the sacrificial fire, His wrath knew no bounds. He decided to destroy both Daksha and his yajna. From the forehead of the infuriated Lord trickled a drop of perspiration which immediately transformed into a strange man-like form with innumerable faces and eyes, and with thousands of hands and feet. This dazzling being was Virabhadra, the frightful destroyer of the yajna as well as all that was related to the yajna. Lord Shiva thus spake to him:

“Valiant Virabhadra! Go immediately and destroy the yajna of Daksha.”

Virabhadra proceeded fast to the yajna. A great battle ensued between Virabhadra and his followers on the one hand, and the several gods on the other. Daksha tried to seek the assistance of Lord Vishnu who declined to help saying, “The only way out is to placate Lord Shiva and seek His forgiveness.”

The gods suffered defeat at the hands of Virabhadra. The yajna was destroyed. Daksha himself was beheaded by Virabhadra and his head burnt in the yajna-fire.

Virabhadra finished off all that stood in his way. He pierced through the nether-world and dried off the oceans. Then he readied himself to burn into ashes all the three worlds. At this, Lord Shiva stopped him saying:

“Virabhadra! You have already destroyed the yajna of Daksha Prajapati. Control your urge to destroy the rest of the creation. Bathe now and be a source of peace to all grahas. You will acquire the name Angaraka (‘burning charcoal; an incendiary spark’)”.

Virabhadra immediately became pacified. Soon he took birth as Mangala from the Mother-Earth and, with the blessings of Lord Shiva, acquired the status of a graha.

The word ‘Mangala’ literally means ‘auspicious’. Mars, however, also represents the fury of Virabhadra. The disposition of Mars in a horoscope is an important factor to be considered while matching horoscopes for matrimonial purposes. ¦

Lord Mangal Dev

Once when Lord Shiva was engrossed in ‘deep meditation’ upon his abode Mount Kailash, three drops of perspiration originated from his forehead fell down on the earth. From those drops manifested a very beautiful infant, who was of reddish complexion and who had four arms.

The child was handed over to the earth goddess, Bhumi for upbringing by Lord Shiva. The child was named Bhaum as he was nurtured and brought up by Bhumi.

When Bhaum grew up, he went to Kashi and did a tremendous penance to please lord Shiva. Lord Shiva blessed him by granting him ‘Mangala loka’, which was superior even to the ‘Shukra loka’.

Kuja (Mars/Mangala)
At some point or other in our life, we all have heard about Kuja or Mars or Mangal. It is the most prominently heard Vedic astrology word, especially while talking about bride and groom. So basically what does this mean? The word which is mentioned the most in astrology, do you know everything about it?

Kuja/Mars
Kuja Mangal
The Sun is the ruling planet and is for the fathers. Similarly, the Moon is for the mothers. Mars is a fiery red planet which is the ruling planet for brothers. Kuja is the giver of good, power, strength, and courage which determines our ability to violent actions in life. Mars also gives confidence, independence, and energy needed to implement plans in life. Without Mars/Kuja we would be lost in our passions without the ability to achieve them. It brings determination in life.

About Lord Kuja
Kuja means ‘burning coal’ or a ‘fair person’. Lord Kuja is actually identified as Lord Kartikeya – the God of War, the son of Shiva. He is believed to have been born from the sweat of Shiva. Lord Kuja is dressed in red, has a red body with four hands born of Earth, carries a Trident, a Mace and a Spear in his hands, and his crown is adorned with precious coral.

As the mythological story goes, Lord Kartikeya was born with 6 heads. He released the Devas from the oppression of the invincible demon Taraka which depicts the qualities of power, strength, and courage of Kuja. Because of this reason, Kuja is also known as the protector of Dharma and the purpose of life.

There is also another notion which defines Kuja as the son of Earth. Ku means Earth and Jha stands for birth. Thus, the ‘son of the Earth’. Also, Lord Kuja is brought up by 6 Kritika stars and is fed by 6-star mothers which result in the 6 heads or faces of Lord Kuja. Because of this reason he is also called ‘Shanmuka’.

The story of Kuja
Kuja – Mars
Kuja – Mars
As per the mythology, it is a story of an old woman who used to observe fast every Tuesday. She had a son named Mangaliya. The Mangal deity assumed the disguise of a Brahmin and came to the old lady’s house. He said to the old lady that he is hungry and shall prepare his own food but the ground needs to be plastered with cow-dung. The woman replied that since it was Tuesday she cannot plaster the ground with cow dung. But she offered to sprinkle the water so that the Brahmin can cook food on that.

The Brahmin refused, saying that he can only prepare food on the cow-dung plastered surface. While the woman said that she can anything else except that. on that, the Brahmin said to the old woman that she calls her son and make him lie upside down so that he can cook on her son’s back. After some thought, the old woman agreed to this and called her son. The Brahmin then lit the furnace on the boy’s back and cooked the food. Once he was done he asked the old lady to call her son to taste the auspicious food. The woman in grief told the Brahmin to cut with his jokes when he knows that the son must be dead by now. The Brahmin still insisted to call her son. When the old woman called her son, he came running. After that, the Brahmin told the old woman that her fast was successful. Her mind was so full of devotion that she may be happy ever. Then the Brahmin disappeared.

Religious beliefs towards Kuja/Mars

Mars- Kuja
Planet Mars is worshipped in many forms in India. In South India, the Mars planet is worshipped as ‘Muruga’ or ‘Murugan’. Principally, Lord Murugan is shown carrying a spear and Vel in his hands and is considered to be very generous in granting boons while protecting his devotees with fierce dedication. Murugan is also identified as the Skanda or the 6 headed son of Lord Shiva. The constellation of 6 nursing mother stars is called Krittika in Sanskrit, so Murugan is widely known as Kartikeya.

In Bengal, people worship Mars as Kartikeya, the brother of Lord Ganesha. All over India, the deity has many other names like ‘Kumaraswamy’, ‘Subramanya’, ‘Velayudham’, or ‘Vadievel’. The peacock is the favorite mount of Lord Skanda or Kartikeya.

In the Hindu language, planet Mars is known as the ‘Mangal Grah’. According to Hindu belief, the ‘Mangal Grah Yantra’ brings peace and happiness in the house and drives away fear. So majority Hindu houses have a ‘Mangal Grah Yantra’ in their puja ghar.

Kuja Dosh in Natal Horoscope
In Hindu society, Kuja Dosh or Mangal is the biggest fear when it comes to marriage. When Kuja is placed in the 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the natal chart, it is said to have Kuja dosh in the natal horoscope. It is more related to perception than actual fear as this combination is applicable to half the population.

In other words, Kuja Dosh is just an unnecessary scare.

Worship
Kuja Mangal
A prayer to planet Mars frees one from poverty, illness, and debts. Visiting the temple of Lord Hanuman or Subramanya or Narasimha every Tuesday is believed to be beneficial.

Manglik (Mangal Dosha/ Kuja Dosha)
Another one of the dreaded blemish in a horoscope which is overtly emphasized by the astrological press, especially in India – Mangal dosha or Kuja Dosha.

Mangal = Kuja = Mars

Dosha = blemish or negative combination

The phobia behind Manglik?

The rumor goes that a Manglik person will be devoid of marital happiness in life. Either the marriage/ partnership ends due to a tragedy/ accident/ injury involving the native himself/ herself or involving the spouse or both.

Also the marriage is full of fighting, misunderstanding and lack of happiness till it lasts. Divorce/ separation (temporary or permanent) result

Accordingly, a very negative dosha to have in a horoscope and it limits the marital bliss a person might enjoy in their life unless they marry another Manglik, in which case the blemish gets neutralized to a large extent.

Definition of a ‘Manglik’-

When Mars resides in house – 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th in a horoscope, Mangal dosha exists. An individual with a Mangal dosha is called a Manglik.

One might also consider the position of Mars from the Moon and the above locations from Moon rashi will indicate a Manglik dosha as well.

Please Note – Some schools of thoughts interchange 1st and 2nd. Meaning they consider a Manglik dosha for 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th house placements of Mars.

Putting some Rationality into the ‘Dosha’ and its implications

Mars will exist in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th houses of a horoscope for 5/12 people on earth. This means just a little below half of the people, or 42% to be precise, are Manglik. This is just when considering from the Lagna. If you consider from the Moon independently, then many of the 58% who are not Manglik from the Lagna can now be Manglik from the Moon and hence more than half of people on earth will be Manglik in that regards.

Take a pause and a deep breath and think rationally. Is it possible that half or more people on earth suffer from an astrological blemish that ruins their marriage in one way or another?

Unlikely isnt it? Hence rationality itself dictates that such a generalized Yoga can never be responsible for damaging fully or in part the marital bliss of any couple.

So Is it completely a made up fable with no reality to it?

Kuja dosha being completely useless in predictive astrology would also be a sweeping and incorrect statement. The idea behind Mangal dosha is due to the following factors-

a) Mars is a generic malefic planet which is fierce, aggressive, energetic, full of anger and ego and is impatient by nature

b) Mars also signifies violence, anger, injury, battles/ wars, litigation etc. in its negative context

c) a & b above go completely contradictory to partnerships or marriages which are based on compromise, patience and sacrifice

d) Mars has a full (100%) aspect in houses 4th, 7th and 8th from itself

e) Since the 7th house represents marriage, spouse and partnerships, when Mars affects the 7th house, negative events related to the 7th house can be anticipated due to its impatient, violent and egoistic characteristics affecting the house of compromise, sacrifice and long term commitments

f) When Mars is in 1st, 4th, 7th or 12th, it aspects the 7th house with a 100% aspect. As for the 8th house, being 2nd to 7th, it signifies the family of the spouse and the longevity of the spouse. Hence Mars in 8th is detrimental for the health and longevity of the spouse

Having defined the meaning and logic behind this ‘blemish’ lets recall that no Yoga – good or bad, exists in isolation and the other planets and their aspects will change this scenario to a large extent. Further if Mars itself is in good dignity, the blemish will not exist in the first place.

Important pointers for Manglik dosha

1) When Mars occupies the signs of – Aries, Scorpio, Cancer or Capricorn and in a Kendra house ( 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) it loses most of its venom and becomes a benefic

2) In the above situation no manglik dosha exists even when Mars is in the 1st, 4th or 7th house

3) When Mars is conjunct or closely aspected by Jupiter, Manglik dosha does not exist

4) Mars in its own signs or exalted in D-9 (navamsa) also defuncts a potential Manglik dosha in the main rashi chart

5) Most important to understand is the complete aspects on the 7th bhaav (please refer to the Bhaav aspects – a complete picture for details). The more beneficial aspect the 7th house has, the better will be results related to marriage/ partnerships and spouse

6) By the same token as #5 above, the dignity and placement of the 7th lord is vital. Even if malefics reside in 7th house, if the lord of 7th is strong in dignity and has good aspects, it will be able to protect the significations of its house and in such a case the 7th house significations will not suffer as much

7) Generally when 2 or more of the ‘generic’ malefics affect the 7th house – Rahu, ketu, saturn, mars & Sun, then the gravity of the negative situation is intensified more than any one planet alone affecting the 7th bhav. Again any of the above planets when in good dignity (example own sign or exalted sign) will not damage the significations of the 7th bhaav

8) Another important point is distance from Bhaav madhya or most effective point of the 7th bhaav. As an example say ascendant is 23 degrees rising. Hence 23 degrees in each bhaav becomes more sensitive to any planet or aspects. Now if Mars sits exact on 23 degrees in the 7th bhaav, it is affecting the 7th house very strongly (good or bad as per dignity of mars and other aspects on it). However, in such a case, if Mars is at say 3 degrees in the 7th sign. Technically now this Mars has gone into the 6th bhaav and not affecting the 7th bhaav in any sifnificant manner. Thus degree wise ‘residential strength’ of planets is very vital to observe for accurate analysis

9) Mars when strong in Vimsopaka bala and/ or Vaiseshikamsa will give beneficial results as opposed to bad (please refer to the Vimsopaka bala and Vaiseshikamsa articles in the advanced topics section if you are unaware about the same)

10) Likewise when BAV bindus of Mars in ashtakvarga scheme is 5 or more in any sign, its results will tend to be very positive there. If Mars is situated in the 7th bhav but with 6 BAV score, it can never hamper marriage or the spouse generally as it receives support from most planets in that sign

11) Even when Mars is negative in a horoscope, at age 28 Mars matures in a horoscope. Thus, after age 28 the negative effects of Mars start to come down (in the logical sense a person tends to become more patient and compromising) and hence Manglik dosha loses is potency after the 28th age of a native’s life

12) A good idea is always to check the dignity of the karaka of a life’s aspect as well. In this case, since marriage and marital bliss are being analyzed, Venus as a karaka (significator) is also to be checked. A strong and well placed Venus will tend to counteract many a negative aspects on the 7th house caused by Mars or other planets in the horoscope.

13) When Mars owns a trine (1,5 or 9) house, then it is a functionally benefic planet for the horoscope and as such, will tend to cause less harm than otherwise

Conclusion – Analyze the horoscope as a whole, like always, before predicting anything related to marriage or spouse of an individual. Manglik dosha exists by basic definition, but as per the rest of the horoscope and the dignity of mars itself, dignity of 7th house and 7th house lord from lagna and Moon will dictate the eventual outcome of a horoscope and one should not read too much into the mere existence of Manglik dosha in a horoscope.

The legend that depicts the influence of the worship of MANGAL goes as follows, and is narrated whenever a worship or offering is made to the deity:

An old woman used to observe fast on every Tuesday and chanted Mangal Mantras to appease the Lord Mangal. Her son was named Mangaliya. Lord Mangal desired to test the piety of this old woman. He arrived at her home in the disguise of a Brahmin. He asked her “I am hungry and I shall prepare my own food but you must plaster the ground with cow-dung.” The woman then explained to him that since it was a Tuesday; she does not plaster cow-dung on that day. Instead she offered to sprinkle water so the Brahmin could prepare his food. The Brahmin insisted on only cooking on a cow-dung plastered surface. The woman refused and said that she could do anything else except cow-dung plaster. The Brahmin said, “Let your son lie upside down, I shall cook on his back.”

After some thought, the woman agreed to this bound by her Dharma and called her son. The disguised Brahmin lit the furnace on his back and cooked his food. After cooking, the Brahmin asked the woman to call her son so that he could take the auspicious food. The woman, in grief, told him to not make such cruel jokes and since after cooking on his back, he would not have survived. The Brahmin explained and insisted that she call the son. When the woman called, the son came running. The Brahmin said, “Old woman, your fast is successful. With kindness, your mind is also full of devotion and faith. May you be ever happy.” The deity (Mangal) in disguise disappeared. This story explains the benefits of Mangal worship and chanting.

Mangal (Mars)

Mars, also known as Mangal is the second smallest planet in the solar system. Mars is renowned for being the most aggressive, violent, and hottest planet in Jyotish (Vedic astrology). Mars is Fire and Blood. Even modern astronomers refer to it as the red planet due to its appearance, which signifies heat, violence, and aggression. The Sanskrit term “Mangal” has two meanings – “auspicious” and “pale or dull colored.” Despite being a malefic planet, Mangal is considered both auspicious and essential for survival and cherishing life. Its importance is emphasized in Vedic traditions, such as the use of the “Mangal sutra,” a sacred thread worn in Indian marriages that symbolizes the rule/formula of Mars.

The kumkum applied by Hindus on their forehead represents protection and strength, and is associated with Mars.

Hindu Deity
Lord Mangal on a Goat
Lord Mangal
Lord Mangal, the creator deity of the planet Mars, is considered both protective and violent. His actions are swift and decisive. According to Purana, Lord Mangal is the son of Bhumi Devi, also known as Bhu Devi, the goddess of the Earth. Bhumi Devi is characterized as beautiful, benevolent, kind, protective, and opportunistic, with a committed and dutiful nature. She takes care of the earth and all its inhabitants, with the help of the other grahas. The different qualities of Bhumi Devi can be observed all over the Earth.

As the son of Bhumi Devi, Mangal inherited some of her qualities. This implies that the planet Mars was created out of the Earth, although science has not yet proven this claim. However, it is clear that the planet Mars shares many similar conditions with Earth, which is why the possibility of life on Mars is a topic of great interest to modern scientists.

Adi Devata (Presiding Deity)
Mangal is associated with Lord Kartikeya, aka Murugan, who is a protective warrior God wielding a spear. Purana says that, Lord Shiva created Kartikeya to vanquish the asuras and restore righteousness (dharma) on Earth. Mangal embodies similar qualities as its presiding deity.

Significations (karakas)
Mars’ main signification is land and real estate. It is also associated with the inner fire that drives us to achieve our goals. It symbolizes masculinity and has a strong influence on younger siblings (especially males), male friends, protectors, defense forces (police and military), engineers, technicians, and sportsmen. Physically, Mars is associated with energy, male sex drive, intense passion, patriotism, competitiveness, tradition, blood, bone marrow, muscles, kumkum (sindoor), sharp objects, surgery, cuts and bruises, machinery, physics, electrical and electronic systems, technology, anger, hatred, physical education, and physical actions.

Interpretations
Individuals with a strong influence of Mars in their chart tend to be protective and territorial of their surroundings. They tend to be physically and mentally active, but their actions speak louder than their words. Their perspective is often technical in nature and may be quite different from that of Jupiter. They thrive on challenges and competition, much like a young adult. Mars is the warrior, the planet of young blood. Mars is all about the present situations, similar to the qualities of Mercury.

Portfolio
Mars is a masculine planet and it reaches maturity around the age of 28. This is when individuals with a strong Mars influence learn to channel their energy and aggression more effectively. In numerology, the numbers 9 and 21 are significant for Mars.

Exaltation and Debilitation of Mangal
Mangal attains exaltation in Capricorn, the battleground where Mars is powerful. To better understand this phenomena lets imagine Mars in Capricorn and analyze it as the 1st house.

Mars is always physically charged, no matter the time of day. He finds fulfillment through regular physical activities. He craves new challenges and objectives, completing them with great fervor before moving on to the next. His determination is unwavering, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. He particularly enjoys physical challenges and competitions with great passion. He is a fast learner, especially when it comes to acquiring physical skills such as tool-making, machine repair, bodybuilding, and martial arts. The latest weapons, tools, and technological advancements fascinate him. Mars is also fiercely patriotic and territorial, and he has a knack for fixing things. He is an independent, strong individual who also values partnership. If Mars is committed to something, he will give his life to protect and nurture it.

The qualities of Mars that were mentioned earlier point towards Capricorn being its most powerful domain. Capricorn governs the knee, the most powerful body part, and it allows Mars to be fully active. Mars can master various skills from here, which is evident from its 3rd house Pisces since Pisces represents the universe. The independent and strong nature of Mars is reflected in the 4th house Aries. Additionally, his eagerness towards challenges and competition (6th house Gemini) indicates his boldness. Lastly, Mars’s willingness to sacrifice his life for his committed one can be seen in the 10th house Libra.

On the other hand, Mars is debilitated in the sign of Cancer, which slows down his natural energy and makes him feel frustrated. It’s like trying to make a fast-paced action hero like James Bond sit and listen to his enemy, which never works. In this position, Mars can only master limited skills (3rd house Virgo), and is forced to give importance to others’ opinions (4th house Libra). He is forced to fight against law and order (6th house Sagittarius), which is against his nature.

Mars finds it difficult to express his natural qualities and impulses in the sign of Cancer, which can make him feel frustrated and limited in his abilities.

Note: The concept of exaltation and debilitation presented here is the result of extensive observational research and contemplation over the years.

About Mangal Dosha
North Indian astrologers don’t consider second house while evaluating Mangal Dosha while South Indian astrologers don’t consider first house while evaluating Mangal Dosha in a birth horoscope. However, there is consensus that both houses should be considered while evaluating Mangal Dosha and Drik Panchang considers first as well as second house while evaluating Mangal Dosha.

Many Kundalis have Mangal Dosha but in most of them Dosha is cancelled due to various combinations of Mars and other planets including state and house position of Mars and other planets in the horoscope.

If Mangal Dosha is present then all combinations which nullify it should be looked into. There are many rules which cancel Mangal Dosha. Drik Panchang considers the most widely accepted rules which cancel Mangal Dosha.
