MASIK KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI

SIGNIFICANCE

The story behind the observance of this day lies in Lord Krishna’s birth.

The Hindu scriptures mention that Lord Krishna is the eighth son of Vasudev and Devaki.

He was blessed by all the gods on the Asthami date of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.

The festival is significant because it reminds us of the cruelty of Kans and the struggle of Devaki and Vasudev.

This reflects the victory of good over evil.

MASIK KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI : RITUALS

Devotees fast on this day to get the blessings of Lord Krishna.

They keep a strict fast on this day.

It is believed that observing this day will fulfill the desires of the devotees.

Masik Krishna Janmashtami

Masik Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated every month on the Ashtami date of the Krishna Paksha.

This is special because Lord Krishan’s incarnation took place on the Ashtami date of the Krishna Paksha.

On this day, along with Lord Krishna, his birth parents Vasudev and Devaki, his foster parents Nand Baba and mother Yashoda, Lord Krishna’s brother Balram, his sister Subhadra are worshipped.

By worshipping God and keeping a fast on this day, devotees celebrate Janmashtami on this date in the month of Bhadrapada as well as monthly Janmashtami on this date in all other months.

Mythology

On the Ashtami date of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhadrapada, Lord Krishna incarnated from the womb of Devaki in the prison of Kansa in Rohini Nakshatra.

It is believed that after this, the locks of the prison opened and the guards fell asleep.

After this, Vasudev reached Nand village, crossing the swollen Yamuna with Krishna, and handed over Nand Baba to Yashoda.

Later, Krishna freed the people from his atrocities by killing Kansa.

Significance

It is believed that fasting on monthly Krishna Janmashtami destroys sins and fulfills all wishes.

The month of Lord Krishna’s birth is Shravan as per Amanta calendar and Bhadrapad in Purnimantha calendar.

This corresponding to August – September months on English calendar and the exact date depends on the lunar cycle.

Masik Krishna Janmashtami

Masik Krishna Janmashtami refers to the monthly celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the Hindu calendar month.

“Masik” means monthly, and “Krishna Janmashtami” signifies the birth of Lord Krishna.

In Hinduism, Janmashtami is one of the most significant festivals celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion across India and by Hindus around the world.

It marks the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, who is considered the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

His birth is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and joy.

While the major Janmashtami celebration, known as “Sri Krishna Janmashtami,” occurs once a year, the term “Masik Krishna Janmashtami” refers to the observance of Krishna’s birth every month on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the lunar month.

Devotees often fast, perform special prayers, sing bhajans (devotional songs), and enact dramas depicting scenes from Lord Krishna’s life during these celebrations.

However, the level of observance and festivities may vary regionally or based on individual traditions, with the annual Janmashtami celebration being the most widely recognized and celebrated.
