The lady always had the divine grace of the Sun God and didn’t have any problems in her life. She used to bring cow dung from her neighbourhood since she had no cow.

Her neighbour was really jealous of the lady’s serene and happy life. So, she took the cow inside her house so that the old lady would no longer be able to collect cow dung. Since the lady couldn’t plaster her house that day, she didn’t prepare food, nor did she offer food to the deity. Therefore, she didn’t eat anything and remained on a fast for the entire day. The old lady took her cow inside her house and was pleasantly surprised to see the cow producing dung of gold. She quickly understood the trick played by her neighbour.

Then the neighbour crossed all limits of selfishness when she visited the king of that place and told him about this divine cow in her neighbourhood. Then the King immediately sent his soldiers to get hold of the cow and bring it to his place. The poor old lady begged in front of the soldiers and cried a lot but all in vain. The lady missed her meals and kept a fast. She kept praying to the Lord to return the cow. Then she fell ill. Then, finally, Suryadev appeared in the dream of the king and asked him to return the cow back to the lady immediately. He also threatened the king that if he doesn’t do so, he will face a mountain of plagues.

The King got terribly afraid and immediately ordered his soldiers to return the cow and the calf to the lady. The next morning the old lady was happy to find his cow back. The King offered a lot of money and food items to the lady and asked her to forgive him. He also punished her neighbour for her wickedness. Ravivar Pradosh Vrat Katha (Bhaanu Pradosh Katha)

Ravivar Pradosh Vrat Katha (Bhaanu Pradosh Vrat Katha) is from the time when a huge group of Rishis accumulated on the banks of river Bhagirathi. Suddenly, the greatest devotee of Ved Vyas, Puraanvetta Ji came down to this Sabha.

Seeing him, 88000 Rishis and Munis of the Shaunakadi stood up and flattened themselves on the ground. After he took a seat, all the other Rishis and Munis took a seat around him.

One of the Shaunakadi Rishi asked Puran Vetta Ji the importance and the cause behind observation of the Mangalprada Vrat. He sat quietly for some time before recounting the tale. The tale that goes here is,

There was a Brahmin who lived in a village with his much devoted wife, who used to perform the Ravi Pradosh Vrat every Sunday. They had a son. One day, this Son went for a Ganga Snan. The thieves caught him on the way unfortunately, and told him that they would not kill him, if he told them about the place where his father used to store the secret treasures in their home.

Now, the son was quite baffled and with a lot of humility, bowed down and told them that they were very poor and that there was no way that they had so much money.

Now, there was a small bag on his back, so the thieves demanded to know what he had in that bag.

Without even thinking twice, he replied that his mother had packed him some food for the way.

So, now the thieves were convinced that this boy was really poor and they decided that they would loot another person and let him go.

Now, from there the boy walked a long distance only to reach a city. There was a Vat tree near the city and the kid slept off under the shade of the Vat Vriksh (tree). Just at that time, the entire clan of soldiers guarding that very city reached the Vat tree searching for the thieves.

Now, when they got no one, they took the boy under their custody considering him to be the thief. The King did not listen to his pleas either and asked them to lock him in the prison.

When the son did not return in the stipulated period of time, the mother and the father became very worried. Next day, there was Ravi Pradosh Vrat and the lady as usual kept the Vrat. She prayed to Lord Shiva for the safety of her son and also asked him to take care of him. Lord Shiva heard her and in the dreams told the King that this boy was not the thief. Lord Shiva warned the King that if the next morning, the King did not advise his soldiers to release him, the whole Kingdom would be destroyed and all the riches of the kingdom would be looted.

Next day, the King released the kid from the prison and the kid told the King his whole story. The soldiers came with the kid and dropped him home, the very next day and also told the entire story to the parents. Initially they were scared seeing the soldiers alongside their son, but when the soldiers confirmed and retold the entire story to the mother and the father, they were relieved completely.

A few days later the King gave the family five villages as a gift. The Brahman and the Brahmani were very happy and lived a life of peace and happiness thereafter.

So, whoever keeps the Vrat would live a happy, healthy and blemish free life with the blessing of Lord Shiva.

(Surya Dev ki Katha)

By observing such a fast, his house was full of wealth and happiness. After a few days passed like this, her neighbor started thinking that this old lady always takes my cow dung. So she started tying her cow inside the house. Due to the non-availability of cow dung to the old lady, she could not leave her house on Sunday. That’s why he neither cooked food nor offered God bhog and he himself did not eat food. Thus he observed a fasting fast.

It was night and she went to bed hungry. In the night, God appeared to him in a dream and asked him the reason for not preparing food and not offering food. The old lady said, today I did not get cow dung to cover the house, due to which our house was not clean, due to which I could not even cook food or offer it to you.

Then God said- ‘Mother! We give you such a cow from which all your desires are fulfilled. Because you always eat your own food on Sundays after making food from cow’s dung at home and offering it to me. Being happy with this, I give this boon to you and give salvation in the last time. By giving such a boon in the dream, the Lord became intrigued and when the old woman opened her eyes, she saw that a beautiful cow and a calf were tied in the courtyard. She was very pleased to see the cow and the calf and tied them outside the house. She put the food there.

When her neighbor saw a beautiful cow and a calf outside the old lady’s house, her heart lit up because of malice and when she saw that the cow had done gold dung, she took that cow’s dung and took her cow’s dung. was put in its place. She kept doing this regularly and did not let the simple old lady know about it. Then the omnipresent God thought that the old lady was being cheated by the deed of a cunning neighbor. In the evening, the Lord caused a great storm with his illusion. Fearing darkness, the old lady tied her cow inside the house. Waking up in the morning, when the old woman saw that the cow had given dung of gold, her surprise knew no bounds and she started tying the cow inside the house every day.

On the other hand, the neighbor saw that the old lady had started tying the cow inside the house and when her stake did not work to pick up the gold dung, she got jealous and did not see any way, she went to the meeting of the king of that country and said- ‘Sir! An old lady in my neighborhood has a cow which is only worthy of kings like you. She gives golden dung everyday. You follow the people with that gold. What will that old woman do with so much gold?’ Hearing this, the king ordered his messengers to bring the cow from the old woman’s house. The old lady was about to go to get the food offered to God in the morning when the king’s servants took away the cow. The old lady cried a lot, but what would anyone say in front of the employees? On that day the old woman could not eat food due to the separation of the cow and kept crying throughout the night and praying to God to get the cow back.

There the king was very pleased to see the cow. But as soon as he got up in the morning, the whole palace looked full of dung. The king was horrified seeing this. God said in a dream to the king in the night- ‘King! It is good for you to return the old cow. Pleased with his Sunday fast, I gave him a cow. As soon as the morning dawned, the king called the old lady and returned the cow and calf with respect along with a lot of money. His neighbor was called and given the appropriate punishment. After doing this the dirt was removed from the king’s palace.

From that day onwards, the king ordered the residents of the city to observe a fast on Sundays for the fulfillment of all their wishes for the kingdom. By observing the fast, the people of the city started leading a happy life. There was no disease or wrath of nature on that city. All the people started living happily.

Fasting and its Significance

‘Fasting’ refers to abstaining from food or certain kind of food items as a prayer or tribute to the divine. Fasting has both spiritual and physical benefits for the observer. It offers you an opportunity to connect with your favorite deity and purifies your impurities, both external and internal. Also called as Upavas or Vrat, fasting can help cleanse your system and improve your body metabolism.

Importance of the 7 Week Days

Each of the 7 week days actually represents a planet and is named only after them, as per the Hindu system. Thus, Monday represents the Moon; Tuesday, Mars; Wednesday, Mercury; Thursday, Jupiter; Friday, Venus; Saturday, Saturn; and Sunday, the Sun. Apart from this, the weekdays are also dedicated to different specific deities. It is strongly believed that offering prayers to that particular deity and the planetary god on his or her special weekday would please the deity and help receive their blessings in abundance.

Sunday and the Planet Sun

Sun is the center of the solar system, which all the other planets revolve around. He is self luminary and remains the primary source of all energy in the world. Though astrology counts the Sun as the prime among the planets, astronomically Sun is not a planet, but is a star, and can be thus be termed as the ‘superstar’ among the planets. Sun is called Surya and is also known by many names, one of which is Ravi and Sunday, the day of the Sun, is known as Ravivar. While this celestial entity represents a host of qualities like conscience, intelligence, individuality, courage, devotion to God, immunity, self-reliance, liberal attitude, honor, trustworthiness, royalty, leadership and fame, he primarily signifies power and authority. The Sun God himself, who is also referred to as Surya Narayana, is worshipped as the presiding deity on Sunday.

Mythology Behind Sunday Fasting

fasting-on-sunday

There lived a poor woman who was very pious. She used to clean her house and apply cow dung all over the surface daily, as cow dung is regarded sacred and applying it remains an age old practice. The woman used to offer prayers and take food only after this daily exercise. She was too poor to own a cow and used to collect the dung from the cow of her neighbor. Gradually, the neighbor grew jealous of this woman, tied her cow inside her own house one day and thus denied the poor lady, access to its dung. Unable to get the dung for applying in her house, the woman felt miserable, abstained from food the whole day and fell asleep in the evening, starving. That day happened to be a Sunday, the favorite day of the Sun God. Pleased with her fasting on that day, Surya Dev showered his blessings on her so that she could get a beautiful cow on her own, which gave her gold along with the regular dung. The woman was overjoyed at the planetary God’s mercy and began worshipping him fervently.

But her mean neighbor got wind of the turn of events, tipped off the greedy king about the gold producing bovine, who sent his men immediately and took away the cow forcibly from the lady. The pious woman rued her fate, prayed to God and went without food that day too, which also happened to be a Sunday. The Sun God intervened again, this time chastising the king for his crime, through a dream. The king woke up with a start and found that instead of the yellow metal that he longed for; all he got from the cow was its dung. Realizing his mistake, he returned the animal immediately to the lady along with enough wealth with which she can support herself comfortably. He also punished the jealous neighbor suitably. People realized the greatness of Surya and began observing the Sunday fasting in his honor throughout the kingdom.

Sunday Fasting Procedure

Devotees start the Ravivar Vrat or Sunday Fasting on Sunday morning with the offering of water to the Sun God and performing the Pooja. As red is his color, his idol is dressed in red, and is decorated with flowers like red lotus. The worship is also done by offering incense, sandalwood paste, wheat grain and specially prepared dishes. Then the fast begins with the reading of Ravivar Vrat Katha (story of the Sunday fasting) and continues till the sighting of the Sun next morning, when it is concluded with the offering of water to the deity. People can eat one meal during fasting, and if so, it should be taken before sunset and also, without salt, oil and fried items. Many give alms also to the poor. It is considered auspicious to begin the fasting on the first Sunday in the Shukla Paksha, the waxing moon fortnight, in Ashwin month (Sept-October) that corresponds to the Tamil month Purattasi. The fast can be continued for the next 12 or even 30 consecutive Sundays.

There are famous temples dedicated exclusively to Sun God like Suryanar Koil in Tamil Nadu, which also contains shrines for all the planets. People in large numbers visit the temple and offer prayers to Surya Dev and other planetary Gods.

This story…

The Markandeya Purana describes the birth of Sun God. The beautiful Aditi was born as daughter of Daksha. Kasyapa beget on her the divine Sun. He is identical with Trinity. Surya was married to ‘Saugna Devi’, the daughter of ‘Viswakarma’, the divine architect. She bore Surya three “children -‘Vaivaswata Manu, Yama and Yamuna’. It came to pass that she could no longer bear the brilliance of her husband’s presence. She fled leaving behind ‘Chaya’, her shadow for years, Surya did not notice this change. ‘Chaya’ bore him three children ‘Savarni Manu Sani and Tapati’.

One day in a fit of anger, ‘Chaya’ cursed ‘Yama’, the son of ‘Saugna’. The curse took effect and Surya was stunned. He knew that no mother’s curse could ever effect her offspring. He questioned ‘Chaya’ who blurted out the truth. He searched for his beloved every-where. At last he spotted her frolicking in the forest in the form of a mare. In order to win her back he changes himself into a horse a horse approached her gently and befriended her. In this form she bore Surya twins called ‘Aswini-Kumaras’. Who later became celestial physician and surgeons. Surya and Saugna turned back into their original forms. In order to keep her by his side, Surya allowed his father-in-law to put him lathe and to share away an eighth of his brightness.

Thereafter, the couple lived together in great bliss. The brightness shorn out of the Sun God was put to good use. Out of it were produced ‘Sudarsana Chakra’ for Lord Vishnu, Trisul for Siva, the lance to Kartikeya’, ‘Vajrayudha’ for Devendra, sword and arrows for Goddess Durga and so on. There is another story in ‘Sarva Puranasara’, Once the Lord of Heaven visited Siva-Parvati on Mahasivarathri day. After darshan he revealed to Siva that he desired to install a replica of Eswara at a holy place where Siva ordered-Shiva told him that instead of the said proposal, it would be more appropriate to install Surya at Arasavalli, because He represents Trinity. Further Shiva accorded a boon that he would be attends there as Kshetra Palaka. Indra was so pleased with folded hands. Then and there he ordered Viswakarma to construct a huge and beautiful temple for Surya.

The Vedas declare, that the colours embeded in the Sun rays cure all diseases.

These Seven rays, viz. 1. Red 2. Orange 3. Yellow 4. Green 5. Blue 6. Indigo 7. Violet, are the seven horses of Surya. We also see the same colours in the Rainbow.

The system of curing the diseases with the different colours of cosmic rays and its benefits are detailed.

This system of “Chromopathy” is the method of systematic application of the Seven colours present in Sun.

In this the health advantages and its procedures are stated. By this treatment certain specific diseases and other common ailments are cured.

This means that leucoderma, heart diseases when attacked exposure to the red rays of Sun health will be resorted.

In this treatment the application of blue colour cures fever, dysentry, diabetics, blood motions. Bronchitis, head ache, urinary disorders, small pox, filarial Elephantasis.

In the line of colours the last one orange, the ultra violet ray are hiddenly secure in its rays. When these rays radiate on our body the ‘D’ Vitamin in the middle of the Skin will be produced.

This ‘D’ Vitamin manufacture the substances ‘Calcium’ and phosphorous essential for our body. Due to these substances teeth get improved and help the actions of the body perfectly.

Due to chromopathy hernia will be cured. The medicine used for cure is kept in coloured bottles and allow the Sun ray pass through there and made a mixture from two to three bottles each time and used each time for three months. Improvement is found. Every disease through the red colour, the yellow the stomach diseases, the green colour heart and all skin diseases are cured. In the Sun’s ray all the colours of red and white are secretly penetrated.

In our body we have different colours in different organs separately. The skin has wheatish colour, hair black, eye balls and teeth whitel the other organs too has different colours in the body. The essence of this cosmic colour therapy is that the deficiency of colour and the reduction of them cause ill health.

The blue colour gives good health and the red colour enthusiasm and energy.

Depending upon the types of disease pure water is filled in the different coloured bottles, and the Sun rays are being attracted through the bottles into the water, and given to the diseased for few days and there by the colours in their body is recouped and health is restored.

The oil and water can be prepared from the cosmic rays during the convenient time from (April, May and June) Caitra to Jesta months. During this period the Sun rays are profusely available.

Medicated Oil Preparation with Sun Rays

To cure the diseases of head, pour gingelly oil, or Badam ol, two inches below the neck of a bottle, tie with the cork or cotton and keep it in Sun shine. When cotton is plugged, every day the cotton has to be replaced. The oil will be ready in Ninety days. After the oil is prepared perfume can be added but not colours.

Medicated Water Preparation with Sun Rays

Depending upon the type of disease, in different coloured bottles, water has to be filled two inches less to the full capacity of the container, and the same coloured cork has to be fitted to the bottle. The oil or water has to be kept on a wooden plank and not on the ground and expose it in full shine from 10 ‘O’ clock in the morning to 5 ‘O’ clock in the evening. In the mean while no shadow should befall on it. If by any mistake it is allowed to stay after the setting of Sun, and the ray of moon, or Stars falls on them the water will be spoiled. Then the bottles must be emptied. It has to be cleansed, fresh water is filled up and again prepared.

When different coloured bottles are kept in the same cabin or when they are exposed to Sun rays simultaneously, a separate coloured papers matching their own colour is daily wrapped and separately kept up with out touching each other and one’s own shade of the bottle will not fall on the other.

The water prepared in one bottle can not be kept more than three days. Immediately it has to be transferred to a white bottle. It is useful only for three days and again it has to be prepared separately. The water prepared though the Sun rays in a white bottle is very beneficial. This water can be used two times during a day.

This story of the Sun God, is related on the occasion of Sunday fast.

It depicts the importance of cow and cow dung and suggests the victory of innocence over jealousy. Once there was an old lady. She would get up early in the morning and took her bath. She kept her house dean by plastering it with cow dung, and took her meals only after offering food to the Sun God. She lived a happy life.

This lady used to collect cow dung from her neighbours house. The neighbours wife was jealous of her. She tethered her cow inside the room so that the old lady could not collect the dung. And as she could not plaster her house with cow-dung, she did not cook her food. She did not even offer food to the idols. She remained on fast throughout the day and slept with empty stomach.

The Sun God appeared before her in her dream. He sold, Why did not you take your meals? Why did you not offer food to the Idols? The old lady said politely, My neighbours lady did not allow me to collect cow-dung from her house. I could not clean my house. I have no cow of my own. The Sun God said, I am happy with you because you kept fast on Sunday. I am pleased with your worship. I shall give you a beautiful The god disappeared. The old lady opened her eyes. A beautiful much cow with a calf was there in her courtyard. She was surprised to see them. She arranged hay and water for them.

When the neighbours lady saw the cow in the old ladys house, she became jealous of her. She also noticed that the cows dung was of gold and not an ordinary dung. She took the gold dung and replaced it with the ordinary dung of her cow. She continued the replacing practice for a number of days. The Sun God noted that the old lady was being cheated by her neighbour. He caused a storm at sun-set. The old lady tethered her cow inside her room for its safety. She was, however, surprised to see that her cow gave her gold dung instead of an ordinary one. She could see through her neighbours trick.

The neighbours lady was constantly jealous. She thought of a plan to deprive her of the wonder cow. She went to the king and said, My Lord, a poor old lady in our neighbourhood has a divine cow. The cow gives gold dung. It would be befitting for your graciousness if this cow Is with you. She keeps it inside her room. No one can have even its glimpse. The king was a greedy person. He told his courtier, Go immediately and bring the cow.

The old lady was about to offer food to the Sun Gods idol when the courtier reached her house. He untied the rope from peg and took away the cow. The lady prayed and wept, but all in vain. The old lady missed her meals that day. She prayed to her God for the safe return of the cow. She could not sleep at night. The king on the other hand, was highly pleased to have that divine cow. That night, he had a dream. The Sun God was there who said, I offered this cow to the old lady as a token of my affection for her worship of me. You do not deserve this cow.

The king woke up. He was badly shaken. He saw that the entire palace was full of cow dung. There was bad smell all around. In the morning, the king sent for the old lady with due honour. He returned the cow to the old lady and also gave her some wealth. The neighbours lady was suitably punished which was a cause of relief to all. The king proclaimed order that all his subjects should observe fast on Sundays if they wanted their desires to be fulfilled. Now, all his people were prosperous. Illness never visited them. They never faced any natural calamity. Everyone enjoyed happiness.

Ravivar / Sunday

Ravivar or Sunday is related to Sun God or Suryadev, who is worshipped with red flowers and red sandalwood.

The Ravivar or Sunday is associated with fast and puja. People keep fast on Ravivar in the name of Surya Narain or the Sun God. Food is only taken once a day before sunset. Generally fruits are taken and salty and fried items are avoided. It is believed that a fast on Ravivar saves one from skin diseases like leprosy, ring worm and eye sores. The Sun god is worshipped with red sandalwood and red flowers. There are two stories related to Ravivar fasting.

Once upon a time the Sun God or Surya Narain ruled the world. He looked after both the world and his family and fed them from the same spoon. He gave half a spoon to all the creatures on the world and other half to his family. The family members of Surya Narain did not work hard and thus was deprived of his blessings. Once Surya Narain’s wife complained to his mother that her son does not give his family enough food and asked her to go and tell him so that he gave them more food. Surya Narain’s mother went to her son and said accordingly. Surya Narain smiled and expressed his helplessness, as he had to feed all the creatures of the world. His mother came back and asked her wife to go by herself and convince him. Surya Narain’s wife met her husband at the court. The courtiers welcomed her. Surya Narain made her sit by his side and listened to her problems. The wife insisted him to increase the supply of the food but Surya Narain said her that the family members do not work hard. Even they do not clean the house properly. He gave his wife five dices and asked to play her with the neighbors. Surya Narain’s wife returned home. She was happy that she could play dices with her neighbors.

In one Ravivar morning, Surya Narain’s wife took the dices to play with her neighbors but she found with great surprise that all of them were very busy with their works right from the sunrise. Some of them were cleaning the house while some others were milking the cows or doing other household works. No neighbor talked to her. Surya Narain’s wife entered one house and asked the lady to play with her. The lady replied that it is Ravivar. So she is busy preparing for the Ravivar fast. She had to clean her house and prepare food for worship. The Sun god’s wife wanted to know about the process of keeping the fast. The lady told her that it is very simple. One had to avoid salty and fried dishes and take rice before sunset. Shurya Narain’s wife then decided to keep fast on all the Sundays (Ravivar). Within a short period after observing the fast, she became very prosperous.

Once Surya Narain decided to check his wife’s loyalty. He visited the house in the guise of an old Pandit. He asked for some food. Surya Narain’s wife replied that she was on Ravivar’s fast. So she requested the Pandit to wait till evening. The Pandit agreed. By evening, when the food was ready, the Pandit insisted to take meals in the same dish in which Surya Narain used to take. Surya Narain’s mother was angry but his wife agreed to serve him in the same dish. It was nightfall. The old Pandit wanted to sleep on the same bed where Surya Narain used to sleep. He asked the wife to press his feet. This time Surya Narain’s mother was very angry but his wife agreed to press his feet also. As the night advanced, the old man asked the lady to share bed with him. Surya Narain’s wife could sense that the person is none other but Surya Narain. She shared the bed with him and from then onwards the Pandit visited the house on every Sunday (Ravivar). The lady became pregnant and eventually gave birth to a child. Everybody knew that she was an impious lady and talked ill about her.

Her mother-in-law could tolerate no more. She said that the lady has done lechery and her husband was not going to forgive him for that. The lady said that the old man who visited her at night was no one else but Surya Narain himself. The mother-in-law still did not believe it and wanted to take a test. She brought an unspinned, ‘kachcha’ thread, which he tied with a tree and hung the other end in a deep well. She asked Surya Narain’s wife to go to the brim of the well. Surya Narain’s wife caught the hanging end of the thread and put her leg inside the well. Suddenly Surya Narain appeared in the scene. He saved his wife and narrated the whole story to his mothers. The spectators of this event were pleased. Surya Narain now led happy and prosperous life with his family members.

There is another story related to Ravivar fast. This story depicts the importance of observing fast on Ravivar as well as importance of cow and cow dung and narrates how innocence win over jealousy.

Once there was a pious old lady. She used to get up early in the morning and took her bath. She cleaned the house by plastering it with cow dung and offered the food to Sun God before taking the meal. The lady was living a happy life. Since she did not have a cow of her own, she used to collect the cow dung from her neighbor’s house. The neighbor’s wife was jealous with her and she tethered her cow inside the room so that the old lady could not collect the dung to cleanse her house. As the old lady could not plaster her house with the cow dung, she did not cook food that day and could not offer anything to the idol. She remained on fast throughout the day and slept in empty stomach.

The sun god appeared before her in her dream and asked her why she did not take her food and why has not offered the foods to the idols. The lady explained everything to him. The Sun God said that he was very happy with the lady as she kept fast on the Sundays. He was pleased with her worship and wanted to give her a beautiful cow. The god then disappeared. In the morning when the old lady opened her eyes she found a beautiful cow standing with a calf in her courtyard. She was happy to see them and arranged hay and water for them.

When the neighbor lady saw this beautiful cow she became more jealous with the old lady. She also noticed that cow did not give ordinary dung, but was of pure gold. The neighbor lady now began to replace the gold dung with the ordinary dung of her own cow. She continued the stealing for a number of days. The Sun God noticed the fiendish behavior of the neighborhood lady and caused a storm at the sun set. The old lady tethered the cow inside the room for safety. She was very surprised too see her cow giving gold dung instead of ordinary one. She understood her neighbor’s trick.

The jealous neighbor lady now chalked out another plan to deprive the old lady of her wonder cow. She went to the king, who was a very greedy man. The clever lady told the king that her neighboring old lady has a divine cow, which gives gold dung. The old lady keeps it inside her room so that nobody can have even its glimpse. She also added that the cow suits the grace of the king, so he must occupy it.

The king sent his courtier immediately to bring the cow. The courtier when reached the house, the old lady was about to offer food to the idol of Sun God. The courtier untied the rope from the peg and took away the cow. The poor lady prayed and wept but all was in vain. She skipped the meal that day and prayed to her god for the safe return of the cow. She could not sleep at night. On the palace, the king was having a sound sleep as he could achieve the divine cow. But he dreamt about Sun God who threatened him by saying he did not deserve the cow, which he offered to the old lady as a token of his affection for her devoted worship.

The king woke up and was badly shaken to see the entire palace full of cow dung. There was a bad smell in the palace. In the morning the king sent the cow back to the old lady with due honour. He also gave the poor lady some wealth. The neighbor lady had substantial punishment. The king also proclaimed order to all over his kingdom that all of his subjects should observe fast on Sunday or Ravivar if they wanted their desires to be fulfilled. Every single people of that kingdom became happy and prosperous and could avoid illness and natural calamity.

The members of Surya Narain’s family did not work hard and washed away his blessings. Once Surya Narain’s wife said to her mother-in-law, “Your son does not give enough food to us. You go and tell him that he should give us more food”. Surya Narain’s mother went to her son and said, “Your wife says that the food given by you is not enough for us. Increase the supply”. Surya Narain smiled and said, “Dear mother, I give half a spoon of food to all the creatures and the remaining half to your family. I have no more food to give”. The mother came back and said, “He is helpless in increasing the supply. Better you go yourself and convince him”.

Surya Narain’s wife made for her husband’s court. The courtiers welcomed her. Surya Narain made her sit by his side and listened to her difficulties. Surya Narain’s wife insisted on increasing the supply for her family. Surya Narain smiled and said, “Your family members do not work hard. They do not even clean the house properly. Take these five dices and play with your neighbors. You will find surplus food for your family”. Surya Narain’s wife returned home with the dices. She was happy that she would show the dices to her neighbors and play with them.

It was Sunday morning. She took the dices to her neighbors, but found to her great surprise that they were busy at work right from the sunrise. Some of them were cleaning or dusting their houses. Others were milking their cows or doing petty household work. None talked with her. She took courage and entered one of the houses and requested the people there to play with her. The lady of the house said, “I am on Sunday fast. I have to clean my house and prepare food for worship”. Surya Narain’s wife said, “How does this fast help you?” The lady said, “Because of it, I have developed a habit for early rising, keeping the house dean, behaving well with every body and remembering God”.

Surya Narain’s wife said, “What is the way for keeping this fast?” The lady told her that it was simple. She advised her to take rice before the sunset and avoid salty and fried dishes. Surya Narain’s wife decided to keep fast on all Sundays. In a short period, she became prosperous. Once, Surya Narain decided to test his wife’s integrity. He disguised himself as an old Pandit and visited his house. He asked for some food. His wife said, “I am on fast. You will have to wait till evening”. The Pandit agreed. By evening, the food was ready. The Pandit said, “I shall take my meals in the same dish in which Surya Narain used to take”. Surya Narain’s mother became angry. But his wife agreed to serve him in the same dish. It was night.

The old man said, “I shall sleep on the same bed which Surya Narain uses. Surya Narain’s wife will press my feet also”. Although Surya Narain’s mother became angry, his wife agreed to press his feet. As the night advanced, the old man asked her to share bed with him. She sensed the reality and shared the bed with him. From now onwards, the Pandit visited her house every Sunday. The lady became pregnant. Everybody talked ill of her. She gave birth to a child. It was too much for her mother-in-law. Her mother-in-law said, “This is lechery. This is impious and immoral. Your husband will not forgive you”. The lady said, “The old man who visits me at night is no one else but Surya Narain himself”.

The mother-in-law said, “You will have to undergo a test. Are you ready for it?” The lady agreed. The mother-in-law brought an unspinned, kachcha, thread. She tied its one end to a tree and hung the other end in a deep dingy well. She asked Surya Narain’s wife to go to the brink of the well. Surya Narain’s wife caught hold of the thread and put her legs inside the well. It was too much for the onlookers. All of a sudden, Surya Narain appeared on the scene. He caught hold of her hand and narrated the whole story to his mother. The onlookers were pleased. Surya Narain now led a happy and prosperous life with his family members.

The Sunday fast story fulfills all wishes and bring happiness and prosperity in life. Listening to this story on Sunday gives the desired wish. The story of Sunday fast is as follows-

In ancient times, there was an old lady in a town. She used to observe the Ravivar Vrat every Sunday. After waking up early in the morning, after bathing, the entire house courtyard was cleaned and cleaned by leaping from cow dung. After that, worshiping the Sun God, then preparing food, offered food to the Sun God and then used to eat it herself. By the grace of Lord Suryadev, she did not have any kind of worry and pain.

By worshiping the Sun God regularly by keeping fast on Sunday, her house was slowly filling with wealth. Seeing that old lady happy, her neighbor was very jealous. The old lady did not have any cow, so she used to bring cow dung from her neighbor’s courtyard on every Sunday. So the jealous neighbor tied her cow indoors after thinking about it.

The next Sunday, the old lady could not leap her courtyard with cow dung. Due to not being able to leap the courtyard, the old lady did not worship the Sun god and did not eat herself that day. At night, the old selpt hungry and thirsty. Thus he fasted without food and water on that Sunday.

At night, the Sun God appeared to him in a dream and asked her the reason for not worshiping and not offering to him. The old lady spoke in a very compassionate voice about tying cow inside the house and not getting cow dung. Knowing the reason for the trouble of his devotee, the Sun God said, removing all her grief and saying – O Mother, we give you a cow that fulfills all desires. Because you always take food on your own by making a meal after taking the whole house with cow dung on Sunday, I am very happy with it.

By observing my fast and listening to the story, the poor get wealth and the infertile women get a son. By giving such a boon to that old lady in the dream, the Sun God disappeared. Before sunrise in the morning, the old woman’s eyes opened and she was surprised to see a beautiful cow and calf in the courtyard of her house.

By tying the cow in the courtyard, she quickly brought it to feed and fed it. When the neighbor saw that beautiful cow and calf tied in the old woman’s courtyard, she became more jealous. On seeing the cow dung, the neighbor’s eyes burst because that cow dung was of gold.

The neighbor did not find the old lady nearby and immediately picked up the gold cow dung and took it to her house and kept her normal cow dung there. That cow used to do gold dung every day before sunrise and before the old lady got up, her neighbor used to take that gold cow dung.

For a long time the old lady did not know anything about the gold cow dung. The old lady kept fasting on Lord Surya Dev every Sunday and listening to the story. But when the Sun God came to know about the cleverness of the neighborhood, he fired a strong thunderstorm. Seeing the outbreak of the storm, the old lady tied the cow indoors. Waking up in the morning, the old lady saw the dung of gold, she was very surprised. After that day the old lady started tying the cow indoors.

When the king came to know about the cow giving gold dung to the old lady, he sent his soldiers and ordered to bring the old woman’s cow. The soldiers reached the old lady’s house to get the cow and calf.

At that time, the old lady was about to eat herself by offering food to the Sun God. The king’s soldiers opened the cow and the calf and took it with them to the palace. The old lady pleaded with the soldiers not to carry the cow, wept a lot but king’s soldiers did not listen. The old lady felt very sad because the cow left. She did not eat anything that day and kept praying to the Sun God all night to get her cow and calf from the king.

The king was very happy to see the beautiful cow. In the morning, when the king saw the gold dung, he was surprised. On the other hand, seeing the Sun God praying to the hungry and thirsty old lady in this way, she felt very compassionate. That same night, the Sun God said to the king in a dream, Rajan, return the old cow and calf immediately, otherwise a mountain of calamities will broke on you . Your castle will be destroyed. The king, frightened badly by the dream of the Sun God, returned the cow and the calf to the old lady as soon as he woke up in the morning. The king gave a lot of money and apologized to the old lady for her mistake. The king punished Padosan and her husband for their wickedness. On the same day, the king announced in the state that all the men and women should worship the Sun God by fasting on Sunday.
