“God’s light is within you, It never leaves you.”

Svadisthana is the Sanskrit term for Sacral Chakra, and it means sweetness.

It is the Chakra of attraction, creativity, and sexuality.

Sacral Chakra is present in the lower abdomen region underneath the navel.

It includes our genitals, womb in women, bladder, and kidney.

The bija mantra of Sacral Chakra is vam, and the color associated with it is orange.

The element bound to this Chakra is water.

Lord Vishnu is the Hindu God linked to this Chakra.

Due to its constitution, it is the focal point of pleasure, desire, and procreation in our body.

Tackling the sexual vitality produced by the openness of the sacral chakra can aid us in making a plethora of achievements in our lives.

Sacral Chakra blockage and its overactive nature can have adverse impacts on our physical, psychological, and emotional health.

The benefits of having a balanced Sacral Plexus Chakra:

A balanced Solar Plexus Chakra can facilitate the streaming of energy and vitality through our bodies.

It can enable us to love completely, be non-judgemental, and to live our lives genuinely.

It aids in the smooth flow of creative and innovative energy.

The optimal balance of this chakra can improve our feelings of commitment, pleasure, and sensuality.

The affirmation that can strengthen our sacral plexus chakra is “I desire.”

It is essential to focus on leading a life you are passionate about to maintain the balance of the sacral chakra.

The hindrance of the energy flow through this chakra can affect the functioning of our bodies.

The effects of having an underactive/overactive Sacral Plexus Chakra:

The disparities in the second chakra can either be its blockage or its overactivity.

Both of them can have various side effects on our physical, emotional, and psychological self.

Recuperating these imbalances can foster our mind-body connection and allow the flow of energy or Shakti.

Kapha (water and earth) is the corresponding Ayurvedic dosha that leads to the imbalance of our sacral plexus chakra.

An overactive sacral chakra could pave the way for

•  muscle pressure,

• stomach issues,

• codependency,

• emotional overcompensation,

• excessive passion for materialistic items

The blockage of the Chakra can lead to physical ailments like irregularities in the menstrual cycle, urinary bladder diseases, testicular diseases, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and lower back pain.

It can lead to other emotional problems such as fear of satisfaction, the tendency to self-harm, pessimism, low energy, lack of imagination, misery, addictive behavior, having unquenchable needs, and possessing destructive emotions.

Curing these problems and attaining a balance in the Chakra are significant factors in helping us to transcend ourselves beyond the finite consciousness of our mind and body.

How do we balance our Sacral Plexus Chakra? :

Balancing our chakras improves our well-being. Adopting certain practices in our lifestyle can bring about balance in our chakras.

Mainly physical activities, sound therapy, reiki, needle therapy, meditation, and aromatherapy can aid the balancing of our chakras.

Always focus on the flow of energy through your chakras for establishing a connection with the infinite consciousness, Brahman.

How to Balance the Sacral Chakra for Greater Sensuality, Intimacy, and Creativity

Some complementary therapies, such as meditation and affirmations, aim to heal the sacral chakra.

If you’re looking for a way to tap into your creativity, sensuality, and sexuality, some people say to look no farther than your own body

specifically, the sacral chakra.

The chakras are believed by some to be energy centers distributed throughout the body, with seven of the main chakras located along your spine.

These wheel-like energy points are associated with different physical and emotional functions in the human body, affecting your overall well-being.

The second of these main chakras is the sacral chakra, also known by some as the “sex chakra.” Some people believe it:

  • enhances creative expression
  • improves sexual intimacy
  • increases intuition

Though there’s no scientific evidence to support the existence of the chakras, they’re part of religious and spiritual belief systems around the globe, including Buddhism and Hinduism.

What is the sacral chakra?

The sacral chakra is believed to be located below the navel, where the perineum is. It’s said to be associated with the sex organs and the kidneys, though this isn’t supported by scientific research.

It’s also associated with the water element and portrayed as a vibrant orange color. It’s often represented by a six-petalled lotus flower.

Some believe this chakra is governed by Parvati, the Hindu goddess of fidelity, fertility, and power.

“The Sanskrit name [for the sacral chakra] is Svadhisthana,” says certified chakra and crystal healer Laura Konst. “

The symbol of the sacral chakra is a moon crescent, which represents the relationship between the tides of water and the phases of the moon.”

In Sanskrit, Svadihsthana means “where your being is established.”

What can the sacral chakra do?

According to some traditions, the sacral chakra is linked to pleasure, sexuality, and joy.

Most of these claims are based on anecdotal evidence, religious texts, and ancient traditions, many of which are still practiced by millions of people today.

While there’s no scientific evidence to support the metaphysical properties of chakras, many cultures and traditions believe that chakra work is beneficial.

According to Candice Covington, author of “Essential Oils in Spiritual Practice,” the sacral chakra is associated with several characteristics.

These include:

  • sensuality, sexual intimacy, and giving and receiving pleasure
  • creativity and unstructured expression
  • birthing environments, things that wax and wane, and the principle of nonpermanence
  • healthy emotions and the inner child
  • the divine feminine
  • synchronicity

Shadow issues — or negative qualities — associated with the sacral chakra include:

  • wounded emotions
  • secrets
  • fear of judgment, getting into trouble, or being “found out”
  • repression
  • inability to experience emotional or sexual intimacy
  • nightmares and not remembering or understanding dreams

Signs of an overactive sacral chakra

“With [overactivity in] this chakra, in particular, you exhibit being consumed by and drowning in emotions, being emotionally tempestuous, and using escapism to avoid life,” says Covington says.

According to Covington, signs of an overactive sacral chakra can include:

  • feeling consumed by your emotions, as if drowning in them
  • experiencing emotional ups and downs
  • using escapism to avoid life
  • showing obsessive affection that isn’t returned
  • engaging in inappropriate expressions of sexuality

Konst says an overactive sacral chakra often results in emotional highs and lows.

“You may try to retain a sense of control by lashing out and exhibiting controlling and manipulating behaviors toward others,” she says.

“Imbalances can manifest in both spectrums and lead to emotional outbursts or an apathetic and disconnected attitude.”

Signs of a blocked sacral chakra

According to Konst and Covington, one of the first signs of a blocked sacral chakra is emotions that feel unbalanced or off-kilter.

These include:

  • detachment
  • isolation
  • anxiety
  • loneliness
  • low libido
  • lack of creative inspiration

“A closed sacral chakra can make you feel detached from your own emotions as well as the emotions of the people around you,” says Konst. “

You may feel isolated and anxious to be alone and lonely. It’s a vicious cycle that can cause loneliness as well as anxiety.”

To tell if your sacral chakra is blocked, Covington advises closely observing the energies, actions, and traits that are active in your life.

“When a chakra is blocked, its energy becomes stagnant and your ability to access the gifts associated with the sacral center become difficult,” she says.

“Its shadow aspects are also active and dominant in your life.”

How to balance and heal the sacral chakra

Many people believe chakras can become blocked and unbalanced. This is said to affect our physical and emotional functioning.

While there are no scientifically backed methods for healing the sacral chakra, one 2018 studyTrusted Source in people with substance use disorders found that complementary and alternative medicine

 including healing energy techniques

may be useful in treating stress and anxiety.

Though energy and chakra healing shouldn’t be relied on alone, they can be a supportive part of a well-rounded treatment plan.

If you want to restore balance to your sacral chakra, Covington and Konst suggest a few practices, including:

  • meditation and yoga
  • affirmations
  • essential oils
  • crystals and stones
  • reflection
  • supplementing your diet

Meditation and yoga

Covington says a meditation that invokes the water element of the sacral chakra can be incredibly powerful.

Try it

Take a comfortable seat or sit in a reclined position and close your eyes.

Visualize a flat white or silver moon stretching from your knees to your navel.

Silently repeat the water element mantra: “vam.”

Work with these combined energies for 1 to 20 minutes, ideally once per day.

“This seemingly simple act will clear the shadow energies and bring the gift aspects of the sacral chakra into sharp focus to be utilized in your life,” says Covington.

Konst recommends yoga as well.

“Yoga is a great practice for chakra healing and many poses specifically connect with certain chakras,” she explains.

“It’s all about being conscious of your body, breath, and mind, and learning to manipulate the flows of energy through your chakras.”

Popular yoga poses for the sacral chakra include:

  • Camel Pose
  • Bound Angle Pose
  • Garland Pose

Affirmations

Affirmations are short, positive statements that you regularly repeat to alter your outlook. Konst says they’re a great tool for chakra healing.

She suggests the following affirmations to balance the sacral chakra:

  • “I trust my feelings. I trust myself.”
  • “I am safe to express my sexuality.”
  • “I allow my creativity to flow freely.”

Essential oils

Some people believe that essential oils can help balance the chakras.

Different oils are said to correspond to different energy centers.

They’re often applied to the skin or added to a bath after being diluted with a carrier oil.

Essential oils that may help balance the sacral chakra include:

  • galangal
  • sandalwood
  • massoia bark
  • pink pepper seed
  • jasmine
  • neroli

Crystals and stones

Crystals and stones are often used in chakra healing work and are usually placed over the chakra during meditation.

Covington recommends using moonstone.

“Moonstone has the rare gift of bringing what one needs versus what one wants,” she says. “It also helps us develop a profound emotional intelligence, a relationship with the deep unconscious, and a connection to the energy of the divine feminine.”

Konst recommends working with the following:

  • Tiger’s eye (especially gold-colored): for heightening the primal connection and leading with courage
  • Citrine: for manifesting joy and becoming reacquainted with life’s simple pleasures
  • Autumn jasper: for compassion and protecting your positive space
  • Carnelian: for unleashing creativity and discovering hidden gifts
  • Mookalite (aka, Mookaiteespecially red-colored): for embracing change and resolving difficult situations

Reflection

Before healing your sacral chakra, Konst recommends balancing your root chakra. This chakra is located at the base of the spine and is known as Muladhara in Sanskrit.

“Once your root chakra is balanced, it’s much easier to move on to your sacral chakra,” says Konst. “I would start with a reflection on your emotions, sexuality, and creativity.”

She also points out that acknowledging your true feelings is a great first step in any healing work.

Konst suggests picking one or two crystals that correspond with the sacral chakra, writing down a single affirmation each day for 7 days, and starting a regular meditation practice.

Supplement the sacral chakra

Covington says diet can also be beneficial when it comes to balancing the sacral chakra. While this isn’t supported by science or mainstream nutrition, foods with certain qualities are traditionally associated with particular chakras and elements.

Covington suggests eating foods that have qualities associated with the sacral chakra and the water element.

In her book “Vibrational Nutrition: Understanding the Energetic Signature of Foods,” Covington recommends the following foods for sacral chakra healing:

  • black cherry tomato
  • Padrón pepper
  • peach
  • gala apple
  • mandarin orange
  • mango
  • oyster
  • Venus clam

Other foods could include figs or pomegranates, which are often associated with fertility in religious lore.

For more food suggestions, see the FAQs section below.

How to tell if you’ve balanced your sacral chakra

Balancing your chakras is believed to sometimes result in a process known as “awakening,” though this is said to be rare.

“The term ‘awakening’ means that the connection with your sacral chakra is fully balanced, open, and very strong,” says Konst.

When this happens, “you’ve reached your own place, your sacred being.”

She believes you may notice a shift in your relationships with:

  • people
  • animals
  • food
  • spirituality
  • nature

You may also start to develop:

  • stronger intuition
  • equilibrium in your emotions
  • an increase in your creativity
  • improved emotional health
  • greater sexual intimacy

6 Easy Ways To Balance Your Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra, or Swadhisthana, is the second of the body’s seven main chakras, or energy centers.

It forms when we are between the ages of 8 and 14 and just beginning to develop a sense of self.

This energy center sits about 2 inches below the belly button and is all about creativity, sexual energy, and relating to our emotions and the emotions of others.

Someone with a balanced sacral chakra radiates warmth, confidence, and generosity.

When the sacral chakra is out of balance, though, reiki master Serena Poon tells mbg that it can lead to “feelings of fear, overwhelm, depression, emotional instability, loss of creativity, and addictive behaviors.”

At some point, most people will experience a blocked sacral.

If you feel like yours could use some tending to, here are six simple ways to balance the sacral chakra.

What is the sacral chakra?

Swadhisthana, or sacral chakra, helps inform how we relate to our emotions and the emotions of others.

It also governs creativity and sexual energy.

Those with a blocked sacral chakra could feel a lack of control in their lives.

How to balance the sacral chakra

Work with the color orange

Each of the seven chakras is associated with a different color.

The sacral chakra is orange, so it’s a good idea to use this shade when doing any sacral chakra work.

Tiger’s eye or carnelian crystals, for example, are wonderful orange stones that can be incorporated into the chakra rituals that follow.

Go for foods that nourish the sacral chakra Speaking of orange, certain foods are thought to nourish certain chakras.

And you guessed it—orange foods are the go-to for the sacral.

“Choosing foods that are in alignment with the sacral is an easy way to help both your physical body and your energetic body balance the second chakra,” Poon notes.

Look for:

  • nuts and seeds
  • sweet potato
  • carrots
  • melons
  • mangos
  • pumpkin
  • orange citrus fruits
  • butternut squash
  • fermented foods
  • hydrate with pure, filtered water infused with orange fruits (clementines, oranges, tangerines, golden raspberries, etc.)

Do some hip-opening stretches or yoga postures

If a chakra feels blocked, it usually means that stagnant energy is trapped there.

So if you feel a block in the sacral, try to get moving with an emphasis on the hips and lower abs.

Poon says that hip-opening stretches, free-flowing dance, and the following butterfly pose (baddha konasana) can help you do so:

  1. Begin in a seated position with the soles of the feet together.
  2. Clasp your hands around your feet and gently bring your chest forward until you feel a slight stretch in your back.
  3. Hold the position, inhale, and hold your breath for 30 seconds.
  4. Exhale and repeat three times.

Do a chakra-balancing meditation

Chakra-balancing meditations can help you get quiet and tune into the energy center that needs work.

Heather Askinosie, the founder of Energy Muse, recommends holding a carnelian gemstone as you complete a meditative visualization picturing cutting the cord to whatever is blocking your sacral chakra: “Hold [the crystal] in your hands, close your eyes, and take three deep breaths,” Askinosie previously told mbg.

“Aloud or in your head, say the following: ‘I ask that the highest vibration of love and light connect with my highest self to clear all unwanted energy and any previous programming.

I command this crystal to hold the intention of balancing my sacral chakra.’

Lie comfortably on your back, and lay the crystal over your chakra for 11 minutes.

While it’s on your body, see the color orange filling up all the space in your second chakra with healing, balanced light.”

  • Get comfortable with stillness

Because the sacral chakra deals with emotions and intimacy, an unbalanced sacral chakra can benefit from some stillness and mindfulness.

Getting comfortable with stillness allows us to connect to our emotions and process them in a healthier way. Make a practice out of sitting still in a cross-legged pose for a few minutes every morning, just noticing the smells, feelings, and sensations of the present.

Add another minute or so to your sit each week.

Get your feelings out on paper

Lastly, journaling can help us connect to our emotions too.

Take a pen to paper and consider questions such as:

  • Am I stimulating or fueling my creative passions?
  • Am I happy with my sex life?
  • What am I currently creating or giving to the world?
  • What would feeling empowered in my creativity and sexuality look like?

Chakra balancing is a lifelong journey that won’t happen overnight. But these practices can help your sacral chakra support you on the path to abundance, fulfillment, and creativity.

The Sacral Chakra – Everything You Need to Know

The Sacral Chakra, also known as the Svadhisthana, is the second of the seven primary chakras. In this article we dive into the significance of this energy center and how to heal the Sacral Chakra.

Sacral Chakra Summary

  • Sanskrit name: Svadhisthana Chakra
  • Location: Lower abdomen, below the belly button
  • Color: Orange(it’s sometimes referred to as the Orange Chakra)
  • Chakra Element: Water element
  • Frequency: 417 Hz / D note
  • Symbol: Lotus flower with 6 petals

  • Signs of an imbalanced Sacral Chakra: Lack of creativity, lack of motivation, relationship and intimacy issues, and physical ailments (joint and pelvic issues, fertility issues, digestive problems).

What is the Sacral Chakra?

The chakra system is an energy system originating from Hinduism and Buddhism beliefs of ancient times.

There are seven primary chakras:

  1. Root Chakra
  2. Sacral Chakra
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra
  4. Heart Chakra
  5. Throat Chakra
  6. Third Eye Chakra
  7. Crown Chakra

Chakras are energy centers in the physical and subtle body from which energy flows.

They are sometimes known as wheels and just like wheels they are constantly spinning life force energy around us, unless of course they become unbalanced or blocked.

In Sanskrit, Svadhisthana is often translated as “the dwelling place of the self” or as the place where we “take pleasure in”.

In other words it represents the seat of our emotional and sexual energy, as well as our creative energies.

Not surprisingly the Sacral Chakra also has a connection with the water element and the moon which are both synonymous with freedom and movement.

The Sacral Chakra is located in the lower abdomen, below the belly button, and above the pubic bone.

It is connected to our kidneys, sexual organs, reproductive system, and associated hormones.

How Does the Sacral Chakra Relate to Color?

The Sacral Chakra is symbolized as a six-petalled lotus flower with a vibrant orange color.

According to color therapy, orange represents joy, wisdom, and creativity.

It fuels our emotional and mental side with hope and optimism, while enhancing the imagination.

Physically, it gives our energy levels a boost and is believed to support the healthy functioning of the digestive system and muscular system.

Why Should We Strengthen the Sacral Chakra?

The Sacral Chakra, or the Second Chakra, holds your creative energy, spiritual wisdom, and emotional and sexual energies.

It’s important that this energy spot remains open for maintaining healthy relationships and the overall harmony of your life.

This is why it’s so vital to prioritize healing the Sacral Chakra.

Read on to find out how to spot imbalances in your Sacral energy and various ways you can heal this powerful energy center.

What Causes Sacral Chakra Blockages?

Your body is a temple, and as such, every problem or pain experienced in the past and present leaves a lifelong impact on the physical body, mind and soul.

For this reason, understanding blockages in this chakra often requires you to carry out some introspection and analysis of past relationships and experiences.

Experiences that can cause Sacral blockages include:

Trauma

Any kind of trauma, emotional or sexual, can cause an imbalance in the Sacral Chakra. It’s important to acknowledge and seek help if necessary to work through any past trauma in order to move forward with balancing your Svadhisthana Chakra.

It is usually best to begin by healing your Root Chakra first as this will enable you to establish a sense of safety within yourself which you can build on when working on your Sacral Chakra.

Relationship Conflicts

The Sacral Chakra is fundamentally linked to our emotional wellbeing. Therefore, any relationship conflicts that are troubling you could well be related to an imbalance in the Sacral Chakra.

Again, it’s important to acknowledge these conflicts and move towards resolving them in order to practice Sacral Chakra healing.

Rejection

We all face rejection in our lives from time to time, whether that’s in our careers, relationships or personal lives.

Rejection can lead to feelings of worthlessness and disappointment and when you don’t fully process these negative energies they can manifest themselves as an energy imbalance in your 2nd Chakra.

Sexual Issues

An unbalanced Sacral Chakra can also reveal itself in an unhealthy sexual relationship (the Sacral Chakra is sometimes called the Sex Chakra).

For example you may feel like something is missing in your sexual life or you may worry that your partner is not interested in you in a sexual way. These feelings of dissatisfaction and disconnection can all cause imbalances in the Sacral Chakra.

What Happens When the Sacral Chakra is Blocked?

An imbalanced or blocked chakra has trapped or stagnant energy, which can lead to specific behavioral and physical issues.

A blocked Sacral Chakra is associated with a range of different emotional issues:

Low Self Worth

If you have an under-active Sacral Chakra you could be lacking in confidence and self-esteem. You may be unable to fully accept yourself and process negative energies.

Feeling Unfulfilled

An underactive Sacral Chakra can also leave you feeling unfulfilled and lethargic. Without access to your inner source of creativity, you may find it difficult to find excitement and enthusiasm for your life and the world around you.

Addictive Behaviors

The Sacral Chakra governs your emotions and when it’s overactive, your emotions can run wild. You can find yourself unable to check your impulses and driven to addictive and damaging behaviors due to unprocessed negative emotions.

Fear

An unbalanced Sacral Chakra can manifest itself in all kinds of fearful emotions, whether that’s depression, anxiety or loneliness. It can leave us shut off from our emotions and from others which perpetuates these negative energies further.

Unfulfilling Relationships

The Sacral Chakra has a big impact on our relationships. An overactive Sacral Chakra can manifest itself in feelings of rage, oversensitivity and argumentative behavior, and this can affect our ability to communicate and express ourselves openly in our relationships.

Due to its connection to our sexual drives, an unhealthy Sacral Chakra can also be seen in sexual dissatisfaction, dysfunction, low libido and reproductive issues.

Physical Issues

There are several physical issues that are connected to Sacral Chakra imbalances. Because the Sacral Chakra is located in our lower abdomen, it is often associated with physical symptoms in the pelvic region such as:

  • Digestive issues
  • Lower back pain
  • Kidney issues
  • Joint problems especially concerning the pelvis
  • Hip issues
  • Premenstrual pains and menstrual cramps
  • Low energy
  • Anemia

Benefits of Healing the Sacral Chakra

Each chakra relates to different mental, physical and emotional functions in the physical body. When these energy centers are balanced, our chi or spiritual power flows freely throughout the body.

When they become blocked, it can take a toll on our emotional body and physical health.

The Sacral Chakra typically develops between the ages of 8-14, which is when we usually start to discover our sense of self, our sexuality and our creative individuality.

The Sacral Chakra balances the energy of warmth, confidence, and generosity. Sacral Chakra energy is also responsible for:

Passion

Passion is at the core of a fully activated Sacral Chakra. This passion doesn’t just include romantic and sexual relationships but also how we approach life – allowing us to grab life with both hands and find a sense of joy and fulfillment in our work, hobbies and relationships.

Healthy Relationships

The balancing of this energy center is directly related to cultivating healthy relationships, both romantic and platonic.

A balanced Sacral Chakra allows us to open up freely and love generously. This leads to more balanced, harmonious and pleasurable relationships with ourselves and those around us.

Creativity

The Sacral Chakra is behind our creative power. This is because it allows our emotions to run freely so we can fully embrace every aspect of our being and the world around us. In so doing we tap into new ideas and perspectives with ease.

Reduce Fear

Healing the Sacral Chakra can help us gain access to our deepest emotions and fears. It is only by accessing these emotions that we are able to learn to address and process uncomfortable emotions and work through our fears.

Working through challenging emotions and tackling fear face on can help us to build our personal power and live adventurously.

Self-Expression

Sacral Chakra healing is ultimately about self-expression – the ability to understand and express our emotional needs freely to ourselves and others. This fuels our creative potential and supports healthy boundaries with our loved ones.

How to Heal the Sacral Chakra

Have you been battling with some of the emotional or physical challenges we’ve mentioned? If so, then you may benefit from the following tips for healing the Sacral Chakra:

Acknowledgment

The first step towards healing is acknowledging that your soul, mind, and body require your help and support.

Analyze your relationships, both past and present, to identify any issues that could be causing you distress. Seek help if necessary from a therapist to help you process any difficult emotions or experiences.

Aromatherapy for the Sacral Chakra

Sacral Chakra aromatherapy is an effective and pleasurable way to restore feelings of creativity, sensuality, and wellbeing.

Classic essential oils which are said to heal the Sacral Chakra include sandalwood, cardamom, bergamot, ylang-ylang and neroli. These oils can be used in a variety of ways, you could use them in a restorative massage or dispel the aromas around your home using a humidifier or aroma-burner.

Meditation for the Sacral Chakra

Meditation is a very popular way to heal this chakra. Meditation comes with a whole host of benefits – it can calm the human body, dispel negative emotions and improve focus to name just a few. There are lots of different chakra meditation techniques, but here is a simple flow you can experiment with at home:

  • Find a calm, quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed.
  • Get comfortable and slow down your breathing.
  • Set your intention for your meditation session – saying a Sacral chakra affirmation, lighting a sacral candle or holding a sacral crystal can be a great way to focus on your intention.
  • Then use your breathing to guide you as you clear your mind and focus on your Sacral Chakra.
  • Feel its powerful energy fill your body with each breath you take.

Use the Color Orange in Meditation

The color orange is closely associated with the Sacral Chakra. Using orange chakra candles and orange crystals such as tiger’s eye, orange calcite, and carnelian crystals during chakra healing meditation, can help you to focus on the Sacral Chakra.

Alternatively, you could visualize the color orange while you meditate. As you inhale, visualize a golden orange light in your lower abdomen and as you exhale, imagine this orange light radiating throughout your body, filing you with creative energy and rejuvenation.

Journaling

Journaling is a really effective way to explore your emotions and help you focus on healing a particular chakra. All you need is a pen and paper and a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. Spend 10 minutes or so just writing whatever comes into your mind, without judgment or examination.

You could use a Sacral Chakra journal prompt, such as

“How have I been expressing my creativity recently?”

This will help you to understand what could be blocking your Sacral Chakra and what emotional issues you need to work on to gain greater harmony.

Affirmations for the Sacral Chakra

You may find that self-affirmations can help focus your mind on working through emotions and undoing negative programming.

Positive affirmations can be spoken out loud at any time of the day, or you might choose to repeat them silently to yourself during meditation.

These affirmations work particularly well for your Sacral energy center, but you can always come up with your own:

  • “I am connected to my community”
  • “I am connected to my family”
  • “I am a creative being”
  • “I attract people who treat me with respect”
  • “I embrace my vibrant sexuality”

Sacral Chakra Candles

Chakra candles combine the healing powers of essential oils with color therapy to supercharge healing energy sessions and meditations. Look out for candles with sandalwood, cardamom, bergamot and ylang-ylang.

Sacral Chakra candles can also be used during meditation and mindfulness sessions. Focusing on the flickering flame of a candle can be a good way to focus the mind and reduce unwanted mental chatter.

Yoga Poses for the Sacral Chakra

Yoga can be a great way to focus on opening your body and releasing tension. Hip-opening yoga poses such as:

  • Upavistha Konasana (Open Angle)
  • Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle)
  • Bakasana (Crow Pose)
  • Baddha Konasana (Butterfly Pose)
  • Utkata Konasana (Goddess Pose)

These poses are particularly effective at targeting the Svadhishthana Chakra as they get right to the heart of the Sacral Chakra’s location in the body.

There are many different yoga traditions to choose from, many of which combine yoga with other healing practices such as meditation.

Sri Sri Yoga for example, combines well known asanas (yoga poses) with breathwork and meditation, allowing you to work on healing the energetic body as a whole.

Sacral Chakra Mudras

Mudras are sacred hand gestures often used in yoga to help us connect to and harness our inner energy. Some people like to perform mudras while meditating or practicing yoga.

Shakti Mudra is a particularly popular mudra for the Sacral Chakra as it is said to energize us while supporting emotional balance and stability.

To form this powerful mudra, simply join your thumb, ring finger and little finger together while keeping your index and middle fingers straight.

Sound Healing

Sound healing involves using instruments to create notes or frequencies which are not only beneficial for our mental and physical wellbeing but can also help us to connect with our chakra centers.

Each of the chakras has a particular frequency and musical note. For the Sacral Chakra this is 417 Hz  and note D. Learn more about the Sacral Chakra Frequency.

There are all kinds of musical instruments you can use (you can also use your voice by chanting). Many people like to use chakra singing bowls alongside a meditation session or yoga practice.

Crystals for the Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra is associated with the color orange and golden crystals such as amber, tiger’s eye, carnelian, citrine, moonstone, and sunstone can be particularly useful for healing this chakra. .

There are several ways to practice crystal chakra healing. You could

  • Place a healing crystal on your body during meditation or create a crystal circle around you.
  • Hold a protective stone in your hands while saying affirmations or mantras.
  • Wear chakra crystal jewelry like necklaces or bracelets.

Sacral healing comes in many forms, and it’s worth trying different methods until you find a healing practice that works for you.

Most importantly, be patient with yourself. Healing an imbalanced chakra takes time and often benefits from both emotional and physical healing practices.

Behind The Meaning The Sacral Chakra

Our much-loved Chakra Collection is based on seven sacred symbols from Eastern philosophy.

This year we are going into more depth with each Chakra and, after beginning with the Base Chakra, this month it is all about the Sacral Chakra.

Where is the Sacral Chakra?

This vibrant energy centre is just below your navel. Find it on your lower tummy at the front, and on the middle of your lower back. It is associated with the colour orange.

What does the Sacral Chakra do?

This is a multi-tasking chakra! You could think of it like a delicious orange, full of sweetness and juice. It connects you to your physical body, sensuous pleasure and the sheer joy of being alive. It is also linked to the moon and the tides, so it governs movement, flow and change. And because it’s in the womb area, it’s associated (even for men) with creativity and the gestation of new projects.

So how do you feel when the Sacral Chakra is strong?

This chakra is all about joy. You feel energetic and optimistic. You seek out pleasurable experiences (an outing, a massage, time with lovely friends) and you can even find the fun in routine chores at home and work. Life seems to flow easily, and you enjoy new challenges. You are also instinctively creative – perhaps you can intuitively throw together a great outfit, or rustle up supper for unexpected guests. You are also very comfortable with your body, and the physical side of your love life.

What if the Sacral Chakra is weak?

When this chakra isn’t spinning properly, life feels dry and dull – the opposite of juicy. You might feel emotionally flat, bored at work, and feel that there is nothing much to look forward to. This chakra can get overwhelmed and exhausted when you have no time to play. It can be hard to look after this chakra when you have exam pressure, tricky family circumstances or you work very long hours, with difficult people. But the pressure can also be internal if you don’t let yourself relax and have fun.

Can the Sacral Chakra be too strong?

When this chakra is too active, you might be partying too hard, feeling things too intensely, and constantly looking for change.

How can you heal and balance the Sacral Chakra?

Start by remembering that all work and no play isn’t healthy. This chakra is associated with a beautiful, bright, vibrant orange colour. So every time you see this colour, (or even see a bowl of oranges!), it’s a reminder of your sacral chakra and how important it is.

The next step is to nourish and support it. You might not think you have time but if you can add a little spontaneous fun, you will feel more optimistic. And if you get a chance to move your body, even for five minutes in your lunch break, you will also have more physical energy.

Could the Sacral Chakra Bracelet help?

It certainly could, because each time you see the six petals of the sacral chakra symbol, glimmering on your wrist, it’s a reminder of this joyful chakra. You could also try looping it around your belt, so it is over your tummy.

The Sacral Chakra would be a good present for…

Your best friend, as a reminder of all the fun you’ve had together. For anyone who is starting a new project, or who needs more joy in their life. And it would be a subtle way to tell your partner how great they make you feel.

The Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra: The Center of Creative Energy

Seated above the root chakra, between the frenum and the navel, the sacral chakra  or svadhisthana is the second of our seven chakras.

Represented by the color orange and the element of water, it’s the seat of our addictions and ultimately gluttonous behaviors.

If we work to balance this energy center, we discover a world of joy rather than sensory overload.

What is the Sacral Chakra?

The sacral chakra is the energy center of all creativity, relationships, sexual energy, and feeling.

When out of balance, the sacral chakra can be a bit of a dangerous place.

The problem is not the desire for pleasure, but the relationship one has with pleasure.

Should we live unconsciously to the underactive or overactive energy in this center, we can find ourselves deprived of vital enjoyment and personal power.

On the other end of the spectrum, we might experience extreme co-dependencies, cravings, and compulsions.

A healthy sacral chakra facilitates creativity, movement, desire, personal power, and healthy relationships where we feel free to express our wants and needs.

A Balanced Sacral Chakra

A balanced and open sacral chakra produces radiant warmth, along with a strong sense of confidence and generosity.

It also plays a key role in our sexuality, and the expression of our sexual needs and desires.

Physical Signs

Physical signs of a healthy, balanced sacral chakra include:

  • Increased energy and desire to move
  • Heightened sexual desire
  • Overall sense of peace and calm

Mental Signs

Mental and emotional signs of a healthy, balanced sacral chakra include:

  • Full creative expression
  • Emotional balance
  • Ability to experience pleasure
  • Comfortability giving and receiving
  • A generous spirit
  • Body confidence
  • Self-nurturing
  • Ability to set and maintain healthy boundaries

An Unbalanced Sacral Chakra

An unbalanced sacral chakra can lead to addictive behaviors, loss of creativity, and emotional instability.

Physical Signs

Physical symptoms of a blocked or unbalanced sacral chakra include:

  • Lower back pain
  • Urinary tract infections and other complications with the bladder or kidneys
  • Ovarian cysts or other reproductive issues
  • Impotence

Mental Signs

Mental and emotional symptoms of a blocked or unbalanced sacral chakra include:

  • Lack of desire
  • Insecurity
  • Low sex drive
  • Overall fatigue
  • Lack of creativity
  • Feelings of depression

How to Unblock the Sacral Chakra

Balanced, open chakras are the key to living our most joyful, peaceful, and authentic life.

A sacral chakra healing practice can help us more fully tap into our creativity and self-expression.

  • Get near water! Go for a swim, take a bath, or walk near a beach, lake or river.
  • Surround yourself with orange. Try eating orange foods, buying orange flowers, or wearing the color orange.
  • Try creative and expressive activities, like painting, dancing, or playing a musical instrument.
  • Yoga postures with a focus on pelvic and hip-opening poses.
  • Breathwork to increase energy flow
  • Meditation and mindfulness
  • Affirmations
  • Place orange crystals on your sacral chakra. Try citrine, tiger’s eye or golden topaz!
  • Physical exercise (to “shake up” your energy!)
  • Avoiding processed foods and sugar

Sacral Chakra Affirmations

Affirmations provide a powerful way to transition our energy into a more positive and receptive state.

They act as gentle prompts for our subconscious, embedding themselves into our conscious awareness over time.

To maintain a healthy, balanced sacral chakra, try repeating one or more of the following sacral chakra affirmations daily:

  • I love myself unconditionally and exactly as I am.
  • I accept my uniqueness.
  • I am grateful for the joy of being me.
  • I embrace my sensuality and sexuality.
  • I am connected to my body.
  • Creative energy freely flows through me.
  • I nurture myself emotionally and take full responsibility for my own happiness.
  • My relationships are based on mutual respect and appreciation.
  • I trust my loved ones, and they can trust me.
  • Inspiration is always flowing to me, and I act on the great ideas I receive.
  • It’s safe to get close to other people.
  • I invite joy into my life.
  • I am open to giving and receiving.
  • I feel confident in my skin.
  • I allow others to be who they are.
  • I’m healing old wounds from past relationships. I release trauma and keep the blessings.
  • I wake up feeling energized and eager to begin my day.
  • Change is perfectly safe.

Sacral Chakra Meditations

Meditation is a powerful tool for opening and balancing the sacral chakra.

How to begin your sacral chakra meditation practice:

  • Choose a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed.
  • Sit or lie down in a relaxed position.
  • If sitting, place your hands on your knees, with your palms facing the sky. If lying down, place your arms to your side, palms facing up.
  • Close your eyes, slowly inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
  • Visualize a warm, orange energy center just below your navel, glowing and spinning as it radiates creativity and passion.
  • Allow your thoughts to flow naturally. If your mind wanders, bring it back to the energy of your sacral chakra.
  • Try to hold this intention for 5-10 minutes to start, or simply end the practice when you feel complete.

Remember, the goal of meditation isn’t to clear your mind, but rather to observe your thoughts and how they make you feel.

If the above practice feels difficult to relax into, you can also try a guided meditation like this one:

What is the Sacral Chakra?

The Sacral Chakra is known as the Swadhisthana Chakra or Svadhisthana Chakra.

Every chakra stores energy that it is responsible for channeling in our astral body.

The Chakras, seven in total, go down the centerline of the body.

The channeling of this energy from the chakras influences our physical body,

how we function, health and characteristics.

When balanced, our life force or prana is free-flowing throughout the body.

When blocked, it can affect our physical, mental and emotional health.

The symbol of the Sacral Chakra is an orange lotus with six petals.

The colors in each chakra and their symbols are associated with different energy centers and reflect the vibrations of the chakra.

The Sacral Chakra is the second vital energy chakra after the Root Chakra or Mooladhara.

It is located in the lower abdomen, four finger-breadths below the navel.

What is the Sacral Chakra Associated With?

The term Svadhisthana means ‘the dwelling place of the self’.

It supports personal expansion, exploration of sexuality, desires, creativity and overall joy in life.

The Sacral Chakra is associated with the bladder, kidneys and reproductive organs. Here, water is the element which represents flow and flexibility.

The Svadhisthana Chakra activation assists in letting go, accepting change and a transformation in life.

Creativity is induced by the color orange and it also stimulates pleasure.

The Svadhisthana Chakra mantra (Beej mantra) is Vam.

Later in this article, we will discuss about the benefits of meditating on Vam Beej Mantra.

When balanced, the sacral chakra benefits in several ways like our relationships with ourselves and the world to be in harmony, nurturing and pleasurable.

You will discover your true creative power, learn to cultivate healthy relationships, gain insights into your emotions and how to confront your feelings.

You will be more free with your desires, needs and emotions.

Did you know the Kundalini is a powerful dormant energy that lies coiled up in the shape of a serpent at the base of the spine?

The Kundalini energy makes its way upwards through the chakras leading to an incredible spiritual awakening.

What are the Characteristics of the Sacral Chakra?

The Water Element

As the Chakra is associated with the element water, it is a place of immense flow.

When the Sacral Chakra is activated, yet balanced, emotions flow freely through us.

Recognizing these emotions allows us to understand and express our desires.

 Balance and harmony is restored.

The Color Orange

The Sacral Chakra’s association with the color orange denotes rising consciousness.

Orange represents activity and purity.

The color unfolds for us joy, faith, self-confidence and balanced energy.

Energy of the Sacral Chakra

You might be wondering what is the Sacral Chakra responsible for?

The Sacral Chakra stores sexual energy and desires.

It helps us shape this desire. It is a place of passion and creativity.

It allows us to discover opportunities and make choices, create and foster intimate relationships, and encourages emotional well-being.

How to Balance the Sacral Chakra?

When unbalanced, the Sacral Chakra causes emotional disturbance, irritability, lack of creativity and an obsession with sexual thoughts.

It can leave you feeling emotionally and physically weak.

Depression, anxiety, over-sensitivity, losing control of relationships, obsessive behavior all indicate an imbalanced Sacral Chakra.

This affects our health, lifestyle, relationships and career.

Health problems that indicated a Svadhisthana Chakra blockage include chronic lower back pain, arthritis, sexual problems, hip issues, anemia, joint pain, low energy and fatigue, spleen and kidney issues and premenstrual syndrome, among others.

Mentally and emotionally, one may feel over-dependent on others, overwhelmed by emotions, lack of interest in sexual desires or an excessive amount of interest, difficulty expressing emotions, needs and creativity.

There are ways to restore balance and release blockages from the Chakras. Here are a few ways to balance the Svadhishtana Chakra.

Svadhisthana Chakra Meditation

Meditation helps balance and open up the Chakras.

One can meditate on the Beej Mantra Vam, focus on the color orange or practice a guided meditation for the Svadhisthana Chakra. Regular meditation will release negativity and induce positive energy in the body.

Affirmations for the Sacral Chakra

Affirmations also help let go of negativity and instill positive energy.

They will help raise the vibrations and restore a positive mindset.

Affirmations that can alleviate the Sacral Chakra include ‘I am passionate’,

 ‘I am a creative being’,

‘Creative energy is flowing through me’,

‘I have boundaries that protect me’,

‘I have an abundance of creativity’,

 ‘My emotions are balanced’,

‘I have fulfilled my passions’, among others.

Be close to water

Since the element water is associated with the Sacral Chakra, connecting with water by being close to a lake, river or ocean is helpful.

It will promote balance in the Sacral Chakra and help regular emotions, passion and creativity.

One can also take a shower or bathe in warm water using essential oils.

Yoga postures to activate the Svadhistana Chakra

As we have seen, the Svadhistana Chakra benefits are plenty.

Practicing yoga asanas can stimulate a sense of balance and harmony in the Sacral Chakra.

Postures like the Crow Pose stimulates the Sacral Chakra, increasing awareness and removing fatigue.

The Triangle Pose is another wonderful example of a posture which stimulates the liver and spleen.

It improves blood flow and tones the abdominal and back muscles, thus activating and balancing the Sacral Chakra.

Other postures that will be helpful are the Goddess Pose, Happy Baby Pose and Garland Pose.

In Conclusion

The Svadhishthana Chakra or Sacral Chakra is a center for creativity, passion, sexuality and desires.

To activate it one can also practice creative activities like art, dance, journaling, etc.

A balance and harmony in this center helps us navigate relationships as well as tap into our real desires, creative potential, visualization and passion.

Suppressing this energy can be a waste as we will never be our real selves or express the creativity and passion within us.

Blockages can lead to negativity and healthy problems.

Yoga is not only about exercise, it goes much beyond that. You can get the optimum benefit of yoga if you know the science and philosophy behind your yoga practice

A Journey through the Chakras – The Sacral Chakra

Svadhisthana – Sacral Chakra

In Sanskrit, the second chakra is called Svadhisthana, which translates as ‘the dwelling place of the self’.

It is the seat of our creativity, and it determines how we see ourselves in the physical world.

Its energy is feminine, passive, and lunar.

Element

The colour of the sacral chakra is orange and it governs the water element, all that is fluid; circulation, urination, menstruation, tears etc.

This energy center relates to creativity, flexibility, fun, freedom, sex, pleasure and money.

Location and Connection to the Physical Body

Located above the pubic bone and below the navel, the sacral chakra relates to the reproductive organs, bladder, kidneys and adrenals, and lower back.

Energy Connection to the Emotional/Mental Body

When we feel free to express ourselves creatively and sexually, to explore our boundaries and experience pleasure without feelings of guilt, our Svadhisthana chakra will be in balance.

This creativity can be expressed as procreation, but the second chakra energy is certainly not limited to that – we create when we cook, bake, or garden.

A balanced second chakra leads to feelings of wellness, abundance, pleasure, and joy.

Imbalances

When this chakra is out of balance, a person may experience emotional instability, fear of change, depression, or addictions.

Deficiency in this chakra may be experienced as a lack of creativity, reluctance to engage in physical romance and denying ourselves the things that can make us feel good.

From an early age, once we pass through the phase where colouring, painting, or cutting paper is completely acceptable, we are often discouraged from creative efforts. We are taught to conform and fit in, and by the time we reach adulthood, we are well used to following the rules and conforming to the society norms, which can result in losing touch with our ‘inner child’.

However, it is not just our creativity that can be stifled – in a culture that is confused about emotional expression, pleasure and sexuality, there are many factors that lead to an imbalanced second chakra.

Other symptoms of a sacral chakra deficiency include fear of intimacy, being out of touch with our feelings, and resistance to change.

Sexual problems and discomfort in the lower back, hips, and reproductive organs can also signify that this chakra needs some kind attention.

An over-active Svadhisthana chakra, may also be manifested in feelings of neediness and oversensitivity.

This may lead to an unhealthy emotional attachment or sexual addiction.

Sacral chakra will be helped by ‘going with a flow’, tapping into our creativity, and not excessively holding on to what you thought before.

When we relax our resistance to life, our hips let go, our reproductive organs become less tense, and we are open to experiencing our sensuality and sexuality.

How can yoga help?

One way to access the potential that lies within this chakra is through creative and intuitive movement.

By cultivating a sense of fluidity and ease in our lower belly, lower back, hips and pelvis, we will unlock our creativity and bring about a more open-minded way of being.

We can start by sitting in Sukhasana, easy cross-legged pose and making seated pelvic circles in one direction 5 or 6 times and then switch directions.

Hip opening yoga poses are also a good way to bring more openness into our body. Gomukhasana (Cow Face Pose),

forward bending with the legs in the first stage of Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (Pigeon Pose),

Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose),

Upavistha Konasana (Open Angle Pose), and other hip and groin openers all provide freedom of movement in the pelvis.

These poses should never be forced, for they require the subtle feminine tough of sensitivity and surrender.
