The brightly shining Sun signifies the power of the Universal Consciousness. Our Vedas declare the Surya to be the creator of the material universe. Being the Soul of all, he is the provider of intellectual wisdom, vision, discrimination, self-realisation, light and life to the world. This makes the Sun is the king of the sky, the Light Giver and generator of the Universe. The year is the wheel of the Sun’s chariot and the twelve spokes of the wheel are the twelve months.

Worship of Sun

In India, the Sun God is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Surya Narayana is worshipped at temples in Andhra Pradesh and at the Konark Sun temple in Odisha. Festivals such as the Makar Sankranti are celebrated to thank the Sun for a good harvest and the first grain is offered to him. Chhath is another important Hindu festival for worshipping Surya Devta. The practice was initiated by Karna, son of Surya, who worshipped the Sun ritually and gained supreme powers, growing resplendent like him.

Yet another festival dedicated to the Sun is the Samba Dasami. It is named after Samba, the son of Lord Krishna, who was cured of leprosy after praying to Surya. The festival of Ratha Saptami is also observed as Surya Jayanti because it celebrates the power of Sun God, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped as Surya. The practice of Sun worship was also followed by Draupadi, a staunch devotee of Surya Dev. Her devotion had earned her the power to cure the deadliest of diseases.

Why We Offer Arghya to Surya:

The Sun represents the power of Universal consciousness.

The Vedas describe the Sun or Surya as the creator of the material universe.

Being the Universal soul, he provides intellectual wisdom, self-realization, vision, discrimination light, and life to the world.

He rules the sky, and he is the generator of the universe.

The year represents the wheel of the Sun’s chariot, and the 12 spokes of the wheel represent the 12 months.

Sun worship:

The Sun is worshipped in many cultures. In India, it is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, called Surya Narayana, who is worshipped at temples in Andhra Pradesh as well as the Konark Sun Temple in Odisha.

Festivals like Makara Sankranti and Pongal are held to thank the Sun God for a bountiful harvest, and people offer the first grain to him. Chhath is yet another festival for worshipping the Sun.

It was begun by Karna, the son of Surya and Kunti (King Pandu’s wife in the Mahabaratha), who worshipped the Sun and obtained great powers, even growing resplendent like him.

Samba Dasami is another festival dedicated to the Sun.

It gets its name from Samba, the son of Lord Krishna, who became cured of leprosy after worshipping the Sun. The festival of Ratha Saptami or Surya Jayanthi is also a major festival.

It celebrates the Sun God’s birthday.

It also celebrates the Sun God turning his Ratha or chariot (that is drawn by seven horses, which represent the seven colors or the seven days of the week) towards the northern hemisphere.

Sun worship was also practiced by Draupadi, a staunch devotee of Surya,

and through her devotion, she gained the power to heal deadly diseases.

The Spiritual significance of Surya Arghyam:

Surya Arghyam is the ritual of offering water to the Sun.

This is done at dawn and dusk and is believed to have many benefits.

The Garuda Purana says that 30 crore demons or Mandehas are orbiting the Sun.

These demons try to swallow Surya at dawn and dusk.

When we offer water to the Sun with folded hands (arghyam) during the Sandhya upasana, it becomes a thunderbolt that overpowers these demons and banishes them to the island of Aruna.

The Garuda Purana cautions that one who does not follow this ritual kills the Sun.

Mandehas signify the mind and body, which cloud the Sun or the Atman residing within you.

In the morning and evening, our mind, body, and senses are out of control.

Hence, we need sadhana and prayers to still them and experience illumination within.

We can offer water, which is our identity, residing in the Swadisthana chakra, to purify ourselves through the Sun’s light and wisdom.

In the same way, Gayathri purifies you with this offering enabling us to perceive the inner light.

After the Arghyam, one should say, ‘Asavadithyo Brahma, Brahmaiva Ahamasmi’ (the Sun is truly the Brahman; the Brahman is myself).

Thus, in spiritual terms, Arghyam is a reminder of the Brahman within who is honored with the offering of water and chanting of the Mantra.

Benefits of Surya Arghyam:

Worshipping the Sun in the early hours of the morning is good for the absorption of Vitamin D and calcium by the body.

This is very beneficial for health.

Also, the worshipper’s body and mind will be very receptive to the cosmic solar energy.

In ancient India, it is said that Rishis could live without food as they could absorb energy from the sun’s rays.

Doing Surya Arghya also helps balance the seven colors within the body.

When offering water to the Sun, the sunlight splits into the seven colors of the rainbow. As we look through this stream of flowing water over the container’s edge, the dispersed light will enter our body and balance the seven colors within our body.

The ritual is said to benefit the eyes by strengthening eyesight, when it is practiced regularly.

It will also make us more disciplined as we will awake early and also finish our work early to perform the rituals.

Prayers uttered during the ritual also help to cool the mind.

Water should be offered to the Sun only at dawn and dusk.

The body has several energy points.

When offering water to the Sun and reciting the Mantra, the water becomes charged.

When we touch the water to our body, it will stimulate those energy points.

This gives us immense energy and recharges the body and mind.

Spiritual Significance of Surya Arghyam

According to the Garuda Purana, thirty crore demons called Mandehas are orbiting the path of the Sun, trying to swallow it at dawn and dusk.

Water offered to the sun with folded hands (arghyam) during the Sandhya upasana is transformed into a thunderbolt that destroys these demons, banishing them to the island of Aruna.

The Garuda Purana warns that one who does not attend to this sandhya rite, kills the sun.

Mandehas are nothing but the mind and body, which cloud the sun of the Atman within you.

In the morning and evening, when your mind, body and senses are out of control, sadhana and prayers are needed to still them and bring illumination within.

By offering water, which is your identity residing in the Swathisthana chakra, you purify yourself through the light and wisdom of the Sun.

Similarly, Gayatri purifies you with this offering so that the inner light can be perceived.

After the arghyam, the devotee should say: “Asavadityo Brahma, Brahmaiva Ahamasmi” (the Sun is verily the Brahman. Brahman is Myself).

Thus in the spiritual sense, arghyam is a reminder to us of the Brahman within.

This Brahman is honoured with the offering of mantra and water.

Benefits of Surya Arghyam

Sun worship in the early morning promotes the absorption of Vitamin D and Calcium into the body, which is especially beneficial for women.

Moreover, the body and mind of sun worshippers is ideally suited for infusion of cosmic solar energy.

In ancient India, rishis were able to live without food since they absorbed energy directly from the sun’s rays.

When you offer water to the Sun, the sunlight splits into seven rays of the rainbow, like a prism fragmenting a ray of light into seven colors.

When the person offering water looks through that stream of flowing water, over the edge of the container, this dispersed light enters their body and balances the seven colors within the body.

In Hinduism, water can only be offered to the sun at dawn and dusk.

Seeing the sun through the falling water droplets which split the sunlight into seven colours is very beneficial for eyes.

Practiced regularly over years, this ritual strengthens the eyesight.

People who do this for years have a probability of wearing glasses.

This practice brings discipline in life as it makes you rise before sunrise.

In the evening, you will be compelled to finish work in a timely manner for offering water to sun.

Surya Arghyam is spiritually beneficial as it cools the mind due to prayers involved in the ritual.

How to do Surya Arghyam

The best time for this ritual is within one hour of sunrise.

Wash your hands, legs, arms and face. Take a copper vessel filled with water.

Add red sandal powder or kumkum to it with a red flower. Now go out where you can see the Sun.

If it’s cloudy and you can’t see the Sun, look east assuming the Sun is there.

Now lift the vessel towards the Sun and start pouring the water slowly.

Look into the rays of Sun through the water streaming from the vessel.

Slowly reciting this mantra, as you pour: “Om Ghrini Suryaye Namaha”

Pour the water slowly so that you can recite the mantra at least eleven times before the water runs out.

Now touch the spilled water with your right hand and bring these fingers to your forehead. Wet them again by touching the water, then touch them to both eyes and lastly to your throat.

When you leave, try not to trample on the (spilled) water which you offered to the sun.

Your body have various energy points. When you offer water to the Sun and recite the mantra, this water gets charged

Touching this water to your body will stimulate those energy points, giving you immense energy and recharging both body and mind.

Thus, it is a way to get rid of negativities and it brings mental peace and physical well-being.

Why We Offer Arghya to Surya

Surya Dev holds special significance in the Vedic scriptures.

Traditionally, Sun has always been held in high esteem by various sects of the human race; kings, priests, astrologers, mystics and people in general. He is called Helios by the Greeks and Ra by the Egyptians. Whenever the evil forces rose, the warriors like the Aryans worshipped Sun god for His blessings of protection. Lord Rama was one of the descendants of Sun. In the Ramayana, Sun is the father of King Sugriva who offered assistance to Lord Rama for slaying the demonic Ravana.

Sun is one of the Nava Grahas (nine planets) in Vedic astrology representing the soul, will-power, eminence, the eyes, vivacity, bravery, leadership, vicar, persons of high calibre and authority. Surya is associated with copper, gold or brass, gemstone ruby and wheat. He represents our soul, His heat represents our vital energy (forces) and His seven horses represent the Seven Chakras of our body. When all of your chakras are charged up, you naturally tend to live positively. The Surya Yantra is one of the sacred objects one can use to draw solar energies that are obtained though worship or Surya Namaskar.

Worship of Sun

“Surya Atma Jagatastasthushashcha” says Rig Veda, meaning ‘Surya (Sun god) is the Soul of all living beings, moving and non-moving’.

Worshiping the Sun god daily by offering simple obeisance or performing Surya Namaskar (yogic postures) is essential.
