Hindu Of Universe
“God’s light is within you, It never leaves you.”

Touching the feet of an elder for seeking blessing is a very inseparable part of the Hindu culture.

This practice has been followed since the Vedic times when it was known as charan sparsh (charan means feet and sparsh means to touch.

If you are from India, you must have seen this practice being followed somewhere or the other.

But in the name of modernity, most of our culture is getting lost.

This is the time when we need to understand the reasons behind these customs.

The belief system cannot work in modern society.

Ancient Indian customs were born out of a deep understanding of life and its mechanics.

That’s why they are relevant irrespective of time and place.

The same is true with the custom of touching the feet of elders as well.

This is not just a formality, rather a complete science.

In this article, we are going to explore the relevance of touching feet of elders, and also the reasons behind the same.

  1. Destruction of Ego: All of the ancient customs had one common objective attached to them; liberation.

Every custom somehow or the other advanced one’s spiritual growth towards the ultimate.

One of the biggest hindrances on the path of liberation is the ‘Ego’.

Now, we can not bow in front of someone without letting our ego bow down as well.

So, while touching somebody’s feet, we are surrendering our ego at his/her feet as well.

If we keep touching the feet of the elders, we may keep our ego from becoming strong.

As a result, we will maintain a humble nature and also advance our spiritual growth.

A strong ego keeps us away from seeing the reality as it is, and starts manipulating our perception on its own accord.

This is also one of the main reasons why people prostrate in front of deities in the temple.

You must have seen that a man, who doesn’t bow down in front of anyone in the world, even he prostates in temples.

There must be some places where you can keep your ego aside for some time.

No matter how big a man you are, you will never find peace if you are always full of ego.

That’s why touching the feet of elders has always been thought important in this culture.

2. Channelising of energy: Our nerves are spread all over the body from head to toe.

When we touch someone’s feet with our hands, a complete energy channel establishes between the two persons.

This allows the person who is touching the feet to imbibe some qualities of the other person.

It can be love, wisdom, intelligence, compassion, or anything else.

The energy channel becomes even more complete when the person places his hand on our head to bless us.

Our touching their feet also gives them respect, which they return in the form of love.

That’s why, we have always touched the feet of the wise, irrespective of their age.

Elder may not necessarily mean in terms of age.

If anyone is elder than us in terms of any quality that is important for a fulfilling life, we touch their feet.

3. Health benefits: We may say that touching feet is a kind of yoga posture in itself.

When we touch feet, our back and hand stretches and gives some muscle relief.

There are two more ways of touching feet.

In one of those methods, first, we sit on our knees, and then we bend forward to touch the feet.

This method also works as a great stretching exercise for our body.

The last method is called shastanga pranam.

It is when we completely lie down on the ground with our head touching the ground, to touch the feet. Shastanga Pranam is observed in temples a lot of times.

In this method, not just some muscles, but the whole body gets stretched.

So, in terms of health, touching feet is very scientific.

4. Emotions and Devotion:

Although all the previously mentioned points are completely valid, human intellect has some limitations of its own.

Everything can’t be justified just on logical grounds.

There is always something of the beyond.

Touching the feet has a very emotional ground as well.

It is not always done as a formality or a practice.

If one is sensitive enough, he will feel that if one is really thankful to the other by heart, there is a natural urge to be near his feet, to embrace him.

A heart to heart connection gets established that can’t be expressed in words.

That’s why disciples always find themselves in their Guru’s feet.

Not a part of the custom, rather a feeling, feeling of love, feeling of devotion.

We have dived deep into this topic and tried to understand the relevance and reason for this popular custom.

From now on, whenever you touch someone’s feet, you won’t be doing just as a practice.

You will know why you are doing it.

This will give a different fragrance to the whole custom.

Once the reasons for these practices are explored, only then they will survive the test of time.

That’s why, you should explore this aspect, and make others aware of this knowledge as well.

Why and When Do We Touch Elder’s Feet in Indian Culture?

Growing up, whenever we visited India, every family we visited, my mom would whisper in my ear, “Make sure you touch their feet.” I would do so dutifully, only to have some of the men always say, “Daughters shouldn’t touch feet.” This was because in many sub Hindu castes, the daughter is a reflection of Goddess Laxmi and thus, her touching feet is not considered good luck for the one whose feet are being touched in Indian culture.

One day I asked my mom, “Why do you make me do it, when they say I don’t need to?”

She replied laughing, “What does it matter? What do we lose by giving that respect to them. It gives you a good workout none the less!”

There are many ways people touch feet. Also known as Charan Sparsh, it has been followed for ages, probably since the Vedic period. Many people over the phone even simply say the words to relay the feeling. Sadarpranam is another phrase used.

Today, I do request my children to touch our feet. One their birthdays and the day they succeed at something or achieve a milestone. Do I force them? No. As with everything, I will let time and them decide what they do as they grow older. For now, I have explained the below to them for …

There are many reasons behind the Indian tradition of touching feet.

Giving Respect

The truth is, whether they want to, or not, the smile an elder gets when you give them that respect is truly wonderful to see. A simple act of bowing down to touch someone’s feet to seek blessings from their aura, setting our ego aside is just a sign of respect. Respect for the experiences, age or success of another.

There is science and tradition behind the act itself, but that smile is an indulgent one that shows us that they appreciate it. And the beauty of blessings and good wishes cannot be denied.

Get Blessings

I have always believed in earning good will.

Every single time, I am in trouble, stressed or happy about something, I go online and share it or ask people for wishes. I do believe in vibes and the fact, that wishes when passed on in a moment of pure feeling always help us succeed.

And who has the purest of wishes for us, more than those ahead of us in age, wisdom or familial link?

Positive words of “Long life” or “May you succeed” or “Be successful” simply slip out of the mouth the moment you touch someone’s feet and there is nothing untoward about that. The elders touch your head with emotions filled with Karuna (affection) and bless you. This emits positive vibes from the elders, which are passed on to you.

Science

The human body is said to contain negative and positive current. The left side of the body is said to carry the negative current while the right side of the body carries positive energy. When a person touches the feet of another person, the two bodies connect with each other, which creates a complete circuit of positive and negative energy.

It is said that touching the feet of elders also has a biological significance. The nerves are spread all over the body of a human. Some of them end at the toes of the feet and the fingertips of our hands. So, when the fingertips of a person touch the toes of his her elders, the finger becomes the receptor of energy, thereby, accepting energy emitted from the body of the elders, while the toes of the elders become the giver of energy.

Health Benefits

And bending over touching our toes is a legit exercise. Imaging touching the feet of elders in the home every single day (in a joint family). Half a work out done!

As per Indian scholars, there are three ways of touching feet. The first one is the basic way of bending forward and touching the feet. The second is to sit on your knees and then touch the feet of the other person. The third and last one requires you to lie down on your stomach, with your forehead touching the ground, which is also known as the Sashtang Pranam, generally practiced by devotees in Hindu temples. While bending forward to touch feet, your back and waist are stretched.

When you sit on your knees and then touch the feet of an elder, your knees are bent and all of the joints in your body are stretched, which relieves you from joint pain. While engaging Sashtang Pranam, your entire body stretches and body pain is cured.

Defining Relations/Hierarchy

In India, people touch the feet of their elder brothers, parents, grandparents, teachers, spiritual gurus and other senior citizens.

Only the feet of elders and such respectable people are touched because all through their life, they have acquired a lot of knowledge, experience and virtues, which prove to be extremely powerful and benefitting for the ones who show them respect and seek their blessings.

In recent times, as people live far from their direct family, we often touch the feet of those who we would love to develop a bond with. Like on my 15th anniversary, my friends’ parents came over and I touched their feet out of how much I miss my parents and told them how they represent all OUR elders back in India.

Now, coming to one controversial aspect of this is whether women should touch their husband’s feet? Or siblings each other? As for me, I do touch my husband’s feet once every year on Karvachauth. He is one year older than me, and the rudder of my life. Always pointing me in the right direction and helping me reach for my dreams, so yes, I do not feel any less touching his feet. But this ofcourse is very personal and not everyone should and would choose what another does.

Occasions for touching feet in India

Indians touch the feet of their elders on various occasions in their daily life, such as:

• When starting something new

• When milestones are achieved

• Before going on a trip

• Before an exam or an important meeting

• When an elder guest comes to your house or you go their house

So, contrary to the times we live in, there is really no downside for putting our ego aside and touching the feet of those who are older to us in various respects. Tomorrow though, if my children choose not to, I would not force them. But if they do carry forward this beautiful tradition, I hope they remember these wonderful benefits.

I would add the caveat though the respect should be given to only those who you feel the same for. Not just to get “points” in a relationship or as an obligation. If the feeling does not come from within, or your gut says otherwise, do whatever your heart says. For any exchange of energies is beneficial only when done so with honesty.

Why do we touch the feet of our elders? Scientific Reasons

Touching the feet is a very common gesture that we used to give our elders. Since ancient times we are practicing this culture. This article deals with the scientific reasons behind touching the feet of an elder, right posture of touching the feet of an elder, it also serves the purpose of an exercise etc. Why touching the feet is beneficial for us is also discussed in this.

In an Indian tradition touching the feet is very common gesture that we used to give to our elders. It is a sign of respect and adopted since Vedic period and also known as Charan Sparsh. Children from a very small age were taught to touch the feet of elders, whether grandfather, grandmother, father or mother, etc. I remember still at my home there is a tradition of touching the feet of our parents, grandparents early in the morning when we woke up and before going to the bed at night. We have read in an epic Mahabharata, Yudhistra stated that touching the feet of the elders gives strength and feeling of greatness. Even Rishis have observed four beneficial factors of touching the feet, i.e. it gives strength, intellect, knowledge and fame.

In an era of modernisation also touching the feet gives gesture and respect to the elders which most of the generations are still following. Elders give blessings while touching the feet by saying long life, fortune, wisdom, etc. There are some scientific reasons behind touching the feet. Let us find out some reasons behind it.

What is the right way of touching the feet?

Before seeing the scientific reason behind touching the feet first we will see how we should touch the feet. Without bending your knees, bend the upper half part of the body and stretch both the arms with head between them to touch the feet of elders. The fingertips of the left hand should touch the right foot of the elder and vice versa. Then, in return elder person will give blessings and touch the top of your head with right hand.

Scientific reasons of touching the feet are:

1. According to science, a human body contains negative and positive currents of electricity. The left side of the human body carries negative current and the right side of the body has positive current. Therefore, two halves together complete a circuit built of positive or negative. And so it is suggested that while touching the feet, we should cross the hands. So that the positive current in both flows in a uniformed circuit and similarly negative flows jointly in a circuit. Thus, both the currents formed a well-unified circuit.

What are the rights of the children in India?

2. We all know that nerves coming out of the brain are present all over the body. These nerves end at the fingertips of hand and feet. So, when you touch your fingertips to the opposite feet of the elder, the energies of two bodies are connected. Fingers and palms become the receptor of energy and feet of another person as giver of energy.

3. When you touch the feet of an elder keeping aside your ego, then the elder accepts your shraddha or your reduced ego and their heart emits positive vibes or thoughts and energy, we can also say it as karuna which reaches you through their hands and toes.

4. We can also say that a kind of cosmic energy also released while touching the feet that connect each other’s mind and heart. The same we can say with handshakes and hugs also. It is said that when you touch the feet of a good soul, you will choose the right path or you will get the right direction in your life to work.

5. Bowing down and touching the feet increases blood circulation which is good for health.

Touching the feet is a kind of exercise also

Why India is Unique Country in the World?

– Some say that there are three methods of touching the feet one is to lean forward and touch the feet, second is to sit on the knees and touch the feet and the third is also known as ‘Sashtang Pranam’.

– In an exercise it is said that leaning forward and touching the feet stretches the waist and back bone.

– When you sit on the knees and touch the feet of an elder relieves the pain of your knees as a person bends his or her knees. All the joints of the body get stretched.

– In Sashtang Pranam whole body is stretched and cures the body pain.

Therefore, from the above article we come to know that there are lots of benefits in touching the feet of an elder as it gives a kind of respect and dedication which arouse automatically and helps in suppressing the egoistic nature of a person. There are lots of scientific benefits and on the other hand it is also a good exercise which is good for health. The custom of touching the feet is practiced whole heartedly and indicates India’s rich culture.

Why do we touch our elders’ feet?

Some of us grew up having to remember to always touch our grandparents’ feet when we saw them. But how many of us know exactly the reason why?

This practice is known as Pranam, Charanasparsh or Padasparshan. Regardless of the name, it all boils down to one thing: respect.

There are 3 main ways to touch feet in the Hindu Culture:

Lean forward and touch the feet,

Sit on your knees and touch the feet,

Lay on your stomach with your forehead touching the ground, and your hands touching the feet.

Because our elders have been around for much longer than us, they have walked the earth for far greater. All of the experience and wisdom they have collected is symbolized in the dust they have collected on their feet

Some Hindus believe that when a person bows down, their ego gets suppressed. So the elder person, in turn, blesses the person touching their feet by raising their right hand.

It also allows for a circuit of energy to be created between two individuals. When the tips of our fingers touch the tips of their toes, energies between the two people are merged.

This practice is also seen in many traditional Hindu wedding ceremonies, when the wife is asked to touch her husband’s feet.

It is believed that, planet Jupiter, the supreme master of the gods, resides in the hands of a woman. Whereas Shukracharya, the guru of the demons, lives in the feet of men. When the wife touches her husband’s feet, along with avoiding the ill effects of the planets, wealth is also formed.

Scientific Reason Behind Touching the Feet of Elders

For many years, Hindus have been carrying their historic traditions. Westernization is welcomed in our lives but not with the elimination of our culture and traditions. There are many such rituals and traditions in Hindu culture, among them, one of the famous is touching the feet of elders which is also known as ‘Charan Sparsh’.

In Indian culture, it is customary to bend down and touch the feet of elders as a greeting and a mark of respect. It is said that by doing this we acquire knowledge, fame, intelligence, wisdom, and strength. We always bow down to our parents, grandparents, teachers, and mainly to those people who are elderly than us or any pious human or revered human beings as a gesture of showing respect and wisdom. In return, the elder person then blesses the person who is touching their feet.

“The Atharva Veda says that when you touch the feet of the elders you accept the knowledge and agree to carry forward their teachings to the next generation.”

Touching feet is a sort of yogic posture which stretches our spine and acts as a sort of exercise in disguise. In today’s modern time, we should not shy away from touching the feet of an elder as it is very essential. As a parent one must encourage children to follow the same tradition.

So, why do we touch our elder’s feet? What is the significance behind it? What is the correct way of touching feet? What does it signify? What is the scientific reason behind touching the feet of our elders? Let us look into the answers to these questions.

Here is the scientific reason for touching the feet of elders –

There is a very interesting scientific reason behind this analysis, so let us know what it is!

• The body is the storehouse of energy- Negative and positive. The left side of the body represents negative energy and the right side of the body represents positive energy.

• When we bend down and touch the feet of our elders it indicates that we are surrendering our ego which leads to compassion. This gives rise to karma within them.

• As we touch their feet this energy is passed on to us, thus also creating an instant liking between two minds and hearts. The nerves from the brain spread out through the body and when we touch another person it forms a circuit thereby transmitting energy from one person to another. We become the receiver and another person becomes the giver of the energy.

• Also, when our fingertips touch the other person’s feet, a circle is formed and the energies of two bodies are linked. This increases cosmic energy by making a quick connection. A lot of positive vibes or energy is released during this process.

• When the person accepts our respect which came from our reduced ego, it is called ‘shraddha’, their hearts emit positive thoughts and energy which is called ‘karuna’, which reaches us through their hands and toes.

• Many Psychologists said that irrespective of how educated we are, how competent we are if we keep surrendering ego in front of others, it helps to keep our ego under control, and if our ego is under control humility gets build up in ourselves and humility is one of the important personality traits of successful people. This is the psychological reason behind touching the feet of our elders.

The right way of touching the feet of elders-

To touch the feet of an elder or a respectable person we must –

• Bend our upper body in front of them without bending our knees.

• Stretch our arms in a forward direction to touch the feet of a person.

• Make sure that the arms are straight to our bodies

• We need to touch the left toe of the person with our right hand and the right toe of the person with our left hand.

The elder person will place his/her right hand on our head to give us blessings( also called ‘aashirwad’)

This is a very unique practice that we find in India and is not replicated in any other culture. There is a difference between showing respect within India and in western society. In western society, respect is mostly shown for competence, but in India respect is definitely shown for an elderly person or any respected person.

The Scientific Reason of Charan Sparsha

The traditions and conventions found in various countries and the religions of the world hold their own importance. Such traditions reflect the originality of a particular culture or mankind. Indian civilisation and Indian culture are the most ancient in the world. Indian culture has impressed other civilisations and cultural groups in the world. The traditions and conventions established in Indian culture are founded on the strong base of scientific facts and in its core there are many cultural mysteries. Great ascetics (Rishis) of the ancient times founded these traditions. Those Rishis have noted their attainments, research and observations in their sacred scriptures. In later time, those truths, facts and findings have become an integral part of religion and religious rituals. Perhaps, very few of us know about those hidden secrets garbed under the cloak of tradition or convention.

In Aryan culture there is a well-set tradition of touching the feet of our father, mother, guru, teacher, elders and honourable seniors. That is the way of saluting them. It is part of our conventional etiquette. But the new generation of this modern age hardly prefers it. They don’t like it. Now a days we don’t find people doing Namskar – Pranam Vandan (kind of salute), when they meet. “Hi” or “Hello” is the modern way. We have discarded ancient conventions and ancient traditions considering them to be ancient culture. These days we are drifting away from our value oriented traditions and being swept away in the waves and currents of modern civilisation. Modern life – modern civilisation means to trail behind the western culture. Our life and philosophy are ruthlessly invaded by the ill impact of the western culture. We are copying their concepts without any logic. At times such acts and behaviour neither have any meaning nor any benefit.

Let us come to the main point. Since thousands of years there exists the tradition of saluting. We salute in due respect by the touching of feet of our elders, our seniors. This tradition is still visible in many families. We should try to grasp the secret behind touching their feet. Our Rishis have observed four beneficial factors present in such an act. An act of touching the feet of our elders gives strength, intellect, knowledge and fame. There is scientific reason to back and support this conclusion.

According to modern science, a human body contains negative and positive currents of electricity. The left side of the human body carries negative current and the right side of the body has positive current. Have you observed any patient of paralysis? Right from his toe to the scalp, the body divides it self into two vertical halves and one half with his organs becomes a prey to such disease. One half of the body is invalid and the other half is active and conscious. One eye, one hand, one leg, one foot become inert; dead like with no movement, no sense, no feeling. Absolutely useless and totally immobile. This proves that each half has distinct currents – either negative or positive. Two halves together complete a circuit built of positive and negative.

At the time of bowing to our Guru, teacher, seniors and elders, we stand in front of them, facing them. The vertical body parts in that case are in the opposite direction. The left side of the Guru shall be in front of the right side of the disciple. In other words negative in front of positive. Keeping in view of this fact, our Rishis in ancient times have suggested the salute of touching feet by crossing the hands, i.e. right hand touches right foot and left hand touches left foot of our elders. Thus the positive current in both flows in an uniformed circuit and in simulate way negative flows jointly in a circuit. Thus both the currents form a well-unified circuit.

The elders to whom we salute shall be a Guru, teacher, scholar, father, mother, sister or an elderly person and shall be much advanced in knowledge, fame, life or strength. He may be a better one in all these areas or he may be better in two of them. One who bows to him shall be desirous of inculcating those qualities. When the feet are touched in a humble salute, that touch shall be like an act of switching on a light. Current flows in the circuit when a switch is on. The current flows to the person who salutes – one who touches the feet. In accordance to the scriptures, our seniors and elders place their right hand on our head and bless us when we touch their feet. This blessed touch creates a complete circuit joining both the persons and current flows in a complete circle. This results in development and growth of virtues and other such attributes in the person who has saluted. A kindled straw kindles another one. A kindled light kindles another lamp. In such light and illumination, a straw or a lamp never looses its brightens or kindled power, but at the same time illuminates and lights other straws or lights. There is no loss to anybody.

Our culture maintains this tradition of touching feet in a humble salute. It is an ancient tradition. The spirit nurtured in this tradition has strengthened our cultures and nation despite invasions, obstacles and calamities. The contents of the Vedas and the Smritis (scriptures) are the eternal truths. We should put it in to practice. Our culture teaches us to respect Earth particles, soil and particles of a cows feet and ashes of a sacred fire by placing it honourably on our forehead.

What does touching feet mean? Know about its Significance and Scientific reasons

What does this signify?

Touching Feet also shows the value (Sanskaar) that a person has got or learned for his/her family. This also make a person happy is touches the feet and in return gets blessings from their elders.

These values are taught to them in their childhood which they practice throughout their life.

There are also several scientific reasons behind this.

Here are some scientific reasons for touching feet:

As per science, a human body contains negative and positive flows of power. The left half of the human body conveys a negative current and the right half of the body has a positive current. Both parts together complete a circuit work of positive or negative. Thus, it is recommended that while contacting the feet, we should cross the hands.

At the point when you contact the feet of a senior keeping aside your personality at that point, the senior acknowledges your shraddha or your diminished inner self and their heart radiates inspirational tones or considerations and energy, we can likewise say it as karuna which contacts you through their hands and toes.

Nerves emerging from the cerebrum are available all around the body. Along these lines, when you contact fingertips with the contrary feet of the senior, the energies of the two bodies are associated. Fingers and palms become the receptor of energy and the feet of someone else as providers of energy.

Powerful energy is additionally delivered while touching the feet that are associated with each other’s psyche and heart.  A person who contacts the feet of a decent soul will pick the right way in life to work.

Hindu Religion: Do not touch your feet with these people, otherwise the virtues will be destroyed..

Hindu Religion: Touching someone’s feet in Hinduism means showing respect to him. That’s why the feet of elders, parents, and teachers are touched. Apart from this, in some special relationships, older people also touch the feet of a person younger than them. But in Hinduism, it has been told about some such people, by touching whose feet all the virtues from a person are destroyed.

Why girls do not touch the feet of their parents

Parents do not touch the feet of their daughters, this is an ancient tradition of India. Because unmarried girls are considered to be the form mothers and taking her blessings by touching her feet is also considered very important. That’s why parents don’t make their daughters touch their feet.

Should a husband touch his wife’s feet?

In Hinduism, it is not considered auspicious for husbands to touch the feet of their wives. It is believed that by touching the feet, a man can create obstacles in his self-righteousness. Touching the feet of the husband creates a hindrance in the dharma of women.

Never make him touch your feet

In Hinduism, it is believed that by touching the feet of the son-in-law, all the virtues of a person are destroyed. Because at the time of marriage, the parents of the girl wash the feet of the son-in-law by touching them. In such a situation, one should not touch the feet of the son-in-law. On saluting the son-in-law, he should be blessed from a distance.

Why not touch feet with nephews

One should not even touch the feet of his nephew, because the nephew has been considered as the form of God. Even the nieces do not touch the feet of their maternal uncle.

Why in India they touch the feet of their elders?

Be careful where you put your feet in India!

For instance, when you are sitting, you must not point your feet towards others, especially if they are old.

Or, one of the worst insults you can do to a Hindu is to throw a shoe in his face (I just found that out and find it good to know!). Walking on a guy while trying to climb onto a train berth also works quite also… (this I have tested for you! At the same time I am not sure any of my compatriots would like it too much either!)

In fact, when a Hindu touches your foot or shoe by accident, he makes a weird gesture (reaching out to your foot and then to his heart or his chin): his way to apologize. A question of education. Like when some people apologize after sneezing…

Morality: guys, avoid playing footsie under the table with a girl to hit on her!

You must remove your shoes at the temple (always) and in houses (in general). It’s quite an easy operation because many Indians wear open shoes, which also reduces foot odors…

And what about foot mycosis? I remember how I laughed when a French friend got shit scared of catching some because he was forced to walk in the puddles in flip-flops (monsoon obliges). I had never thought of it! What makes me laugh even more is discovering, by doing some research, right now, I learn that the foot fungus and other dermatophytes, are a major health problem in tropical countries like India, with sometimes risks of epidemic. When I think about the floor of that temple filled of rat piss and rain water! At the same time it is not so much of a surprise when you think about all the stray dogs with scabies. Or about all these people delousing each other on the sidewalks. But no need to panic: I never caught any mycosis in seven years!

If you want to shock an Indian you can put your feet on a book, a journal, a computer, a piece of paper. It is just like if you stamped on the goddess of knowledge, Saraswati, who is embodied in all these objects. You may be wondering how one ends up with his feet on a book but when you study very late every night, you often end up instinctively with your feet on your desk as it eases blood circulation.

Similarly apparently Hindus should not blow on fire. Yeah it would be like blowing on the face of the God of fire, Agni. Not very polite is it?? That said I have seen many people blowing birthday candles!

The feet symbolism dates back to the Vedic time (the Vedas being texts of the fifteenth century BC) where the universe was the body of the God: there was a top and a bottom. The pure and the impure. Feet are at the bottom and therefore unclean, impure.

Any rule has an exception. Obviously. When it comes to feet, the exception is the feet of the gods, the spiritual leaders and the elders which are not dirty. So it’s not gross to touch them; it is even a sign of respect. It is a gesture made on many occasions: a departure or return from traveling, a wedding, a festival, a religious ceremony etc. In the old times children had to touch the feet of their parents when going to bed and getting up.

My ex-favorite Indian had explained to me that in the Kerala tradition the eldest brother of the bride had to wash the feet of the groom, as a sign of respect.

When you bend to touch the feet of an elderly person he usually doesn’t let you finish your gesture and replies by touching your forehead and blessing you with wishes of long life, prosperity and wealth.

This custom seems to be very very old since it is mentioned in the Mahabharata (an epic that is not dated but probably more than two thousand years old) where it is written “touching the feet of the mother, father, teachers and elders with devotion and serving them until they are content and give their blessing, is what makes a person great and strong”.

It does not really explain the origin of the gesture. But I found an explanation I quite like. When you do yoga you are taught some notions of energy circulation. It is thus thought that by touching the feet of others we absorb their energy and in turn by placing their hand on our forehead they allow the energy to move from the hand to the head.

Why Do We Touch Peoples Feet?

As a child I have been accustom to touching certain elders feet, mainly my parents and grandparents.  I would always to do this on special occasions, like or New Year when I met my grandparents. My understanding…. To seek blessings when ever I embark on something new or have to do something new, special or auspicious I would seek blessings from my parents touching their feet.  They would lovingly place their hands on my head and then I would also get the most comforting hugs.

So with everything else I wanted to find out more about this tradition…my inquisitive mind of why do we do this… So lets find out The Jai Jais way. As time goes on our culture is getting diluted, personally I feel these traditions are so special and have such deep meanings and I would like them to live on through generations.  I want both my boys to understand these and continue to practice and believe. They will only continue if they understand the meaning behind what they are asked to do. Ancient Indian customs were born out of a deep understanding of life and its mechanics.

This practice has been observed since the Vedic times its is known as “Charan Sparsh”, In Sanskrit “Charan” means ‘feet’, and “Sparsh” means, ‘to touch’. So what I have found out is there are several reasons for touching feet let’s explore these:

Why do we touch feet?

Indians prostrate to their parents, elders, teachers and noble souls by touching their feet. The elder in turn blesses us by placing his or her hand on or over our heads. Prostration is done daily, when we meet elders and particularly on important occasions like the beginning of a new task, birthdays, festivals etc, Incertain traditional circle, prostration is accompanied by abbivaadana which serves to introduce one self, announce one’s family and social stature. Man stands on his feet. Touching the feet in prostration is a sign of respect for the age, maturity, nobility and divinity that our elders personify. It symbolizes our recognition of their selfless love for us and the sacrifices that they have done for our welfare. It is a way of humbly acknowledging the greatness of another. This tradition reflects the strong family ties, which has been one of Indian’s enduring strengths. The good wishes (sankalpa) and blessing (aashirvaada) of elders are highly valued in India We prostrate to seek them. Good thoughts create positive vibrations.

Good wishes springing from a heart full of love, divinity and nobility have a tremendous strength. When we prostrate with humility and respect, we invoke the good wishes and blessings of elders, which flow in the form of positive energy to envelop us. This is why the posture assumed whether it is in the standing or prone position, enables the entire body to receive the energy thus received. The different forms of showing respect are :

* Pratuthana – rising to welcome a person.

* Namaskaara – paying homage in the form of namaste .

* Upasangrahan – touching the feet of elders or teachers.

* Shaastaanga – prostrating fully with the feet, knees, stomach, chest, forehead and arms touching the ground in front of elders.

* Pratyabivaadana – returning a greeting.

Rules are prescribed in our scriptures as to who should prostrate to whom. Wealth, family name, age, moral strength and spiritual knowledge in ascending order of importance qualified men to receive respect. This is why a king though the ruler of the land, would prostrate before a spiritual master. Epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata have many stories highlighting this aspect. This tradition thus creates an environment of mutual love and respect among people ensuring harmony in the family and society.

Reason – Symbolism – Importance of Touching the Feet of Elders in Hinduism

Touching the feet of elders and Gurus (teachers) is of great importance in Hinduism. It is known as Charan Sparsh. Symbolically, the act of touching the feet shows respect. However, there are many other reasons. It is part of Hindu culture. An individual performs it without fear or coercion. Like all tradition in Sanatana Dharma, this one is also not forced by any rule.

The origin of the tradition of touching the feet of family members, elders and important people in Hindu society is lost in time. No one knows when this tradition started.

When we touch the feet of elders and Gurus, we connect with the positive energy in them. This energy is passed on to the person touching the feet. There is an exchange of positive energy.

It is also a way of suggesting that we all are connected to each through the invisible power of the Supreme Truth. As per Hinduism, all animate and inanimate rises, floats and transforms in Supreme Truth (God). There is nothing outside. It is our ego (ignorance), which is forcing us to believe that we all are different. Thus by touching we are killing the false ego. First, we do Namaskar to the Supreme Truth in the other person and then touch feet. Both this act takes out the false notion of superiority.

There is also a belief that when we offer respect to elders by touching the feet, there will be positive change in the grahas (planets). This will help in changing luck and ushering in peace and prosperity.

As per some Hindu communities, those who show respect of elders by touching their feet will be blessed with long life, knowledge, fame, honor and strength.

When the elderly person touches the head or body of the person touching feet, there is transfer of spiritual and positive energy. This helps in the expansion of spiritual and positive thoughts. It also drives out negative energy.

The scientific explanation behind touching the feet of elders

The act of “Charan Sparsh” or “Pada Sparshan” comes with scientific reasoning. There are nerves all across the human body. It starts with our brain and spread all over the body. These nerves end at our fingertips and toes.

When you touch the feet of an older person, the fingertips of your hand are joined to the feet of the opposite person. It forms a closed circuit between the two persons and the energies of your bodies are interconnected with each other.

Your fingers and hands become the receptor of that energy, and the feet of the elder person becomes the giver of that energy. When you touch the feet of an older person, their heart is filled with positive energy which they give out to you through their hands and feet.

So, a closed circuit is established between who seek the blessings and those who bless them. It results in a flow of positive energy from the feet of the elder person to the younger one. There is a transfer of goodwill and healing energy from the elder person to the younger person.

When the elder stretches his hands and touches the head of the younger person with a gesture of blessing, it establishes a closed circuit between the two wherein positive energy and blessings are transferred from the elder to the younger one.

The Right Way of Touching The Feet

Here, we enumerate the right way of touching the feet of an elder or respectable person. First of all, you need to bend your upper body in front of the elderly person and stretch out your arms forward. The arms should be parallel to each other.

Touching Feet

Does your child touch your feet? One of the most important aspects of Indian culture is respect for parents, and for age.

Although India prides itself on having a rich culture and heritage, few Indian are aware of their culture and traditions, and it is not unusual for us to come across people from outside India, or Indians living abroad, who are more aware of India’s rich heritage than we are.

For most Indians, being aware of our culture simply means touching our grandparent’s feet once in a while, knowing a little of the Mahabharata, knowing that Rama was good and Ravan was bad, and not walking out of a marriage, no matter what the cost.

However, there is a lot more to culture than just this. In this article, we touch on just one of the many aspects: respect for age.

Arguments

Children are often taught to respect age. However, as experience has time and again shown us, an elder person is not always right. If you try and force your child to listen to someone like a grandparent just because he is older, you may sow the seeds of resentment in your child. Instead of forcing your child to bow down before age, focus on teaching your child how he can express his opinion without being rude to his elders. Also, teach him that is perfectly acceptable to have two points of views for different situations, and, although he is perfectly entitled to his point of view, there is no need for him to force it on others. A common dispute between children and parents or grandparents is that of vulgarity. A child may be watching MTV, while his grandmother crops up and comments on how obscene a particular music video is. In such cases, teach your child that obscenity is a point of view. If your child doesn’t think it is obscene, that should not form a base for argument. Teach your child that it is mature and open-minded behavior to let another person, especially someone elder, state his point of view, without jumping in to argue.

Touching Feet

Youngsters today are often uncomfortable with touching the feet of elders. If your child feels this way, don’t force him to touch your feet or the feet of his grandparents. Instead, work by example. If you don’t touch the feet of your mother, don’t expect your child to, especially if this habit has not been inculcated since childhood. If you would like your child to touch your feet every morning, make this a habit from his childhood. If he doesn’t one morning, don’t let it slide, or gradually the habit may die down. Every time your child touches your feet, do give him your blessings, and give him a hug. If you brush him off or are distracted, he may not bother doing so again. Also, children often shy away from touching feet in public, so it may help if you encourage him to touch your feet even in public, from a young age. Touching the feet of your parents is simply a mark of love and respect for them, and a request for their blessings. These days, generally only a person fairly self-confident and comfortable with himself, his heritage and where he comes from can touch their parent’s feet in public, without feeling self-conscious.

The Tradition of Touching Feet

The reason for touching feet in Hinduism

Indian culture is known for its various cultures and traditions. Touching feet of elders is one of the examples of such tradition. The practice of touching feet of elders was adopted in India during the Vedic Period called Charan Sparsh. Charan means ‘feet’ and Sparsh means ‘touch’. In Hindu families, children are taught since childhood to pay respect to elders. According to Hindu Tradition, when we touch the feet of an elder person, you are blessed with knowledge, intellect, strength, and fame. The gesture of Charan Sparsh is a form of exercise. Bowing down to touch the feet stretches the backbone and waist and increases the blood circulation in the body.ImageSource

Like most of the other Hindu religious practices, there are some scientific reasons behind touching feet or Charan Sparsh. According to scientists, the human body contains negative and positive currents of electricity. The left side of the body contains negative currents whereas the right side of the body contains positive currents. Both the current make a uniform circuit together. Therefore, it is recommended to cross hands while touching feet so that the positive current flows in a uniformed circuit in both and similarly negative flows jointly in a circuit.

As we all know, the nerves originate from human brains ends at fingertips and feet. So, when you touch your fingertips to the opposite feet of the elder, a close circuit is formed and energies are connected, which results in establishing a connection between the two bodies and souls.

When elders touch the head of the younger ones to bless, a flow of energy is exchanged. It develops a sense of humbleness and gratitude towards him/her. When you touch the feet of an elder keeping your ego aside, the heart of the elder emits positive vibes and energy. A kind of cosmic energy is released by establishing a connection between the heart and mind where the elderly person becomes the ‘Giver’ and person in blessing becomes the ‘Receptor’. It is also said that when you touch the feet of a good soul, you choose the right path or you will get the right direction in your life to work.ImageSource

In today’s world, the practice of touching the feet of elders are getting wrongly evolved, in other words, we can say that a few people pretend to take blessings by touching the feet with no contact. We should properly follow our culture and rituals to keep them alive as we received them from our sacred heredity.

In India, tradition dictates that the young touch the feet of their elders to seek blessings—from children to adults, it is a common gesture to show respect to elders. In the Vedic period, it was known as Charan Sparsh—and according to Rishis, touching the feet of parents, grandparents, teachers or elders gives strength, intellect, fame and knowledge. In the modern era, people believe that doing Charan Sparsh helps get a longer life, fortune and wisdom. Little do we realise that the act of touching elders’ feet is backed by science. Turns out, it is an exercise as well.

How to touch elders’ feet properly?

Over time, many cited back and knee pain issues to get away with it while others found an easier way out by simply bending to touch the knees of elders.

Read on to know the right way of touching the feet of elders:

Without bending the knees, bend the upper half of the body

Stretch both arms with the head between them

Finally, touch the feet of elders

Fingertips of the left hand should touch the right foot of the elder and vice versa

What is the science behind touching elders’ feet

Surprising as it is, there is science behind the act of Charan Sparsh.

Exchange of energies: Nerves coming out of the brain are present all over the body and they end at the hands and feet. So when one touches the fingertips to the feet, alternating the arm and leg, the energies of both bodies are connected thereby making palms and fingers receptor of energy.

Keep aside ego: Touching the feet of an elder helps keep aside ego—this helps the elder emit positive vibes through energy and thoughts which reaches one through their hands and toes.

Improved blood circulation: Bowing down and touching the feet of elders helps increase blood circulation to upper body parts thereby improving skin and hair health.

An exercise

Touching elders’ feet is also an exercise and there are many ways of doing it. Many times, people practice the Sashtang Pranam; however, this one is often performed to honour God.

The Sashtang Pranam is when the whole body is stretched and one lays flat on the stomach on the floor to seek blessings. This one is known to alleviate body pain.

Why we worship the Feet of the Guru?

The uninitiated may wonder why the feet of holy ones are so reverently worshiped in the Hindu faith. According to tradition, the totality of the satguru is contained within his feet. All nerve currents terminate there. The vital points of every organ of his bodies-inner astral, inner mental and soul-are there. Touch the feet and we touch the spiritual master.

Mystics teach that the big toe on the left foot exudes the most grace. The left foot is the revealing grace, and the big toe of that leg connects to the guru’s pituitary gland, the entrance to the door of Brahm, deep within the sahasrara chakra where, in contemplation, he merges with Siva. The vibration of the satguru can be subtly felt through gently touching his sandals. In doing so, one tunes in to the feet of the preceptor’s physical, pranic, astral, mental and soul bodies.

In deep spirituality there is little presumption of ego. All that one hopes for, all that one pays for, all that one strives for is to touch the Divine in the most modest of ways. Worship of the feet epitomizes this humble attitude. Devotees worship the feet of the guru as the feet of God Shiva, the attainable attainment, seeking to partake of, absorb into themselves, the vibration of their guru, ultimately to become like their guru, who has realized his oneness with God Shiva.

Satguru Sivaya Subramaniyaswami wrote, “Practices to Advance spiritual unfoldment include prostrating before God, Gods and Guru, full body, face down, arms and hands out stretched, and in that act, total giving up, giving up, giving up, giving up. What are these devotes ones giving up? By this act they are giving the lower energies to the higher energies. It is a merger, a blending. When one is performing this traditional devotional act, awakening true prapatti, it is easy to see the lower energies from the base of the spine through all six chakras above it and out through the top of the head. It is transmuting, changing the form of, the base energies which breed conflict and resistance, ‘mine and yours’ and ‘you and me’ division, insecurity and separateness, into the spiritual energies of ‘us and we’ amalgamation, security, togetherness.

Once the giving up of the lower is total-body and face on the ground, hands out stretched before the image of God, Gods or guru-those energies are surrendered into the higher chakras within the devotee, an it is a blissful moment, into the consciousness of us and ours, we and oneness, and inseparable love, thus claiming their individuality, not as a separate thing, but as a shard oneness with all. Thereafter, these devoted ones, having been transformed, are able to uplift others, to harmonize forces around them that they work with day after day, year after year. This total surrender, and adopting his revelation of the Sanatana Dharma as their own. Therefore, choose your spiritual model carefully, because you are going to become like that model if you worship that guru’s feet.

There is yet another meaning of the holy feet. When a person walks upon the Earth, only the feet touch the ground. Similarly, when God and Guru contact the Earth, it is the esoteric feet, the lowest part of consciousness, which make that contact. This, then becomes the locus of communion with the Divine. In India the greatest of all initiations is for the satguru to place his holy feet upon the worthy disciples head.

Feet in Hinduism

Feet hold a powerful symbolism with Hindu culture. You take off your shoes when you enter a temple. When sitting you never point your feet towards people, especially seniors, and you never spread your feet before an altar or towards fellow worshippers. We can say the feet of people are considered low. In fact one of the greatest insults you can make is to throw shoes at someone: And yet the feet of God and seniors are special. God’s feet and even a guru’s feet are often called “lotus feet” and in some temples even a small set of shoes belonging to the Deity (shathari) is touched to the head of worshippers. We even drink the feet bathing water of God as a prasada and sprinkle the bathing water of a guru’s feet on our heads. The basis for feet symbolism goes back to the Vedic conception of the universe as the body of God. Just like a body has high and low parts so this universe has high and low, pure and impure places. Up is high, down is low. Feet touch the ground, which is low, and so when you enter a temple you leave your low part at the door. We take off our impure part, our feet, symbolized by leaving our shoes at the door as we enter sacred space. You might say we leave our materialistic side at the door when we enter spiritual space.

Significance of touching feet of elders and spiritual gurus

in bharat (india) the tradition is to touch the feet of elders or spiritual saints or gurus to take their blessings. this is done on all auspicious occasions like marriage or on religious festivals or any time when you want blessings of elders. in some families which still follow the santhan dharma way of living, the children touch the feet of their parents in early morning and then they start their daily activities. this custom is still highly revered in bharat.

science behind touching feet of elders and spiritual gurus:

in human body, we lose energy from sharp points like fingers, toes etc and from round/circular areas we gain and preserve energy. scientifically also we know circle conserve energy as there is no point for leakage of energy.

so when you touch the feet of elders and they bless you by touching your head with their hand. then you gain energy in your head (which is circular). the energy gained by you is released from the fingers (sharp points) of your elders.

the most important aspect in this exchange of energy is that this process should not be robotic and emotionless. the elders should be filled with love and care while blessing the children. otherwise not much giving of blessing (energy) will happen. because you need to have something with you to give it to someone else. so your parents should be full of love and also present here now (in present moment) while blessing you. because if while giving blessing your parents attention is somewhere else then whatever they are thinking you might get little percentage of it.

secondly, the children should also be open and humble while receiving blessing. then only they will be able to receive energy. if touching the feet is just out of formality then you will not be able to gain much psychic energy because your ego will block the blessings. thats how things work in psychic dimension. one should be humble, receptive and not full of ego while touching the feet of elders.

apart from gaining psychic energy, it helps you to become humble and more respectful towards elders. being humble is an important quality of a religious person or of a good human being. its important that your children are taught this quality very early in life. they should not be disrespectful or insulting to servants or to poor people. every body should be treated with respect irrespective of their age, caste or financial status.

many spiritual gurus don’t allow anyone to touch their feet or even their body. because they don’t want to leak their energy as they are still doing the sadhana/spiritual practice. moreover few of them are only interested in sharing their energies with right candidates.

tip: the same principle is behind covering your head with a scarf or pagdi, while visiting temple or doing meditation. so that you conserve energy around your head which you have gained after a meditation session or which you have received while visiting the temple.
