“God’s light is within you, It never leaves you.”

India is a land full of myriad cultures and traditions, and one such Hindu festival is “Pradosh“.

Hindu devotees’ believe, it is one of the most powerful vrat (fast).

They observe a fast on this day and celebrates this Vrat with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal.

The Pradosh ritual is a penance aimed at seeking good health, peace, and liberation (Moksha).

The word ‘pradosh’ means ‘beginning part of the night’, or ‘relating to the evening’.

So, this scared vrat is observed during evening twilight (Sandhyakaal) and called “Pradosh Vrat“. According to the Divine scripture ‘Shiva Purana’, it is believed that Lord Shiva and his Consort, fulfils the wishes of their devotees on this festival.

The vrat is usually observed on the 13th day (tithi) of the lunar month.

Out of all seven pradosh, Shani Pradosh (when a pradosh falls on a Saturday) and Soma Pradosh (When a Pradosh falls on a Monday) are considered to be most important.

Pradosh Vrat Katha (story): Skanda Purana, the largest of all the Puranas describes the renowned story of Lord Shiva.

How He saved the universe by drinking poison which was emerged from the ocean and that is the reason behind observing Pradosh vrat.

According to a tale from Skanda Purana, even before Satya Yuga, the demigods (who represent divinity) and the Asuras (demonic characters) jointly performed the Samudra Manthan under the guidance of Lord Vishnu.

They churned the cosmic ocean by using the biggest snake Vasuki as the rope to obtain the ambrosia and consume it to become immortal.

And the first outcome of the churning of the ocean was the Halahala (poison).

When poison emerged from the sea bed, it was so venomous that it could have wrecked the universe. So, neither the good nor the evil minds came forward to claim it.

Lord Shiva then drank the Halahala to save the creation and lives on earth.

The day when Lord Shiva decided to drink the last drop of this poison is celebrated as the day of Pradosh.

Significance of Pradosh fast: Pradosh is an auspicious day as it is believed that, by fasting and worshiping Lord Shiva on this day, an individual can eliminate all his/her sins and obtain liberation (moksha after death).

The Skanda Purana beautifully describes the significance of pradosh fasting:

  • Just visiting a Shiva temple and lighting a single lamp during the Pradosh Kaal is enough to please Mahadev (Supreme among deities).
  • Those, who observe a fast on this auspicious day with devotion and faith are bound to possess contentment, health, and wealth.
  • Chanting of Maha Mrityunjaya mantra 108 times inside a shrine of Lord Shiva and Parvati tranquilizes the mind and supports for spiritual upliftment as well as fulfilment of one’s desires.

The Shiva Chalisa explains the significance and benefit of keeping a fast on pradosha vrat as per their fall on weekdays:

  • Som Pradosh which falls on a Monday brings good health to a devotee and helps in fulfilment of all his/her wishes.
  • Bhaum Pradosh which falls on a Tuesday cures many diseases and blesses the devotee with long life.
  • Wednesday Pradosh fulfils the wishes of a person, who observes a fast.

As per the Hindu calendar and beliefs, there are two ways of fasting on this holy day.

As this festival starts with the sunrise in the morning, devotees take a bath in the morning and observe a 24-hour fast without sleeping in the night and fasting from sunrise till the next sunrise.

Then they can only break the fast after taking a bath in the next day morning and by eating some fresh food.

Another part of the clan observers fasts from sunrise to sunset, as the term pradosh refers to the evening time around sunset.

Typically, the pradosh time starts from 90 minutes before sunset to 60 minutes after sunset.

On this auspicious day, devotees observe a fast from morning till the completion of puja and aarti in the evening.

They visit a temple of Lord Shiva during the evening hour after taking a bath before sunset.

These devotees go with a restrictive and light diet in the night upon completion of the rituals in the temple.

Foods to eat on this auspicious day: Though most of Hindu devotees do not eat food during Pradosh fasting, for the few who cannot observe a fast for 24 hours, they can have some restrictive and light diet after the evening puja.

The followings are few sattvic great food ideas:

The Commencement and Observance of Pradosh Vrat

Pradosh Vrat, a sacred ritual observed by devotees of Lord Shiva, holds immense importance in bestowing blessings and spiritual prosperity. The observance of this vrat spans from early morning until the worship of Lord Shiva during sunset. However, the specific timing may vary depending on the city and individual traditions. Alternatively, some devotees observe the vrat for a 24-hour period, remaining awake during the night and concluding the vrat with Shiva worship the following morning.

The Rituals of Pradosh Vrat

Pradosh Vrat entails a set of practices that must be adhered to diligently in order to receive the desired spiritual and material benefits. Devotees are advised to awaken early in the morning, preferably during the auspicious Brahma Muhurta at 4 AM. After bathing, they should wear clean attire and abstain from indulging in physical pleasures throughout the vrat.

Dietary considerations hold utmost importance during this sacred observance. While some devotees choose to abstain from consuming any food, others opt for a sattvic diet if health constraints arise. It is essential to avoid tamasic foods, including meat, fish, onions, garlic, mushrooms, and over-ripe or under-ripe fruits and vegetables. These tamasic foods not only affect the body negatively but also hinder spiritual progress. Sattvic foods, on the other hand, promote purity of mind, rejuvenate the body, and bring joy to the heart.

Chanting the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” helps cultivate the necessary mindset for the vrat. Beginning approximately an hour before sunset, devotees dedicate themselves to the worship of Lord Shiva. This involves reciting his mantras, offering prayers, and performing rituals such as bathing the Shivalinga with water and offering Bilva leaves. Additionally, Goddess Parvati and Nandi are also worshipped alongside Lord Shiva.

During the puja, a Kalasha filled with water, covered with a coconut and adorned with mango leaves, symbolizes Lord Shiva. The water used in the puja is offered as prasad, and sacred ash (vibhuti) is applied to the forehead. Lighting a lamp during the puja not only wards off impurities but also fills the surroundings with positive vibrations, creating an ideal atmosphere for worship. Continuously chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” throughout the puja is highly recommended. Following the puja, engaging in acts of charity is considered auspicious. It is advised to consume a light meal during the night and retire early to bed.

Unveiling the Legends of Shiv Pradosh Vrat

The Pradosh Vrat is associated with various intriguing stories that highlight Lord Shiva’s divine grace and compassion:

The Tale of Lord Shiva and the Halahala Poison

According to legend, during the churning of the cosmic ocean by the gods and demons to obtain the elixir, a deadly poison called halahala emerged. Its potency threatened to annihilate the entire universe. In an act of supreme sacrifice, Lord Shiva consumed the poison, causing immense pain. Goddess Parvati lovingly placed her hand on his throat, halting the poison’s effects and leaving Lord Shiva with a blue throat. The gods and demons, overwhelmed by Lord Shiva’s act, worshipped him. This event took place on the Trayodashi Tithi, further emphasizing the significance of Pradosh Vrat.

The Story of Lord Shiva and the Waxing and Waning Moon

Another narrative linked to Pradosh Vrat revolves around Lord Shiva and the Moon. The Moon, known as Chandra Dev, was deeply infatuated with Rohini, one of his 27 wives and the daughter of Prajapati Daksha. Neglecting his other wives caused them to become jealous, eventually leading them to complain to Prajapati Daksha. Despite his father-in-law’s attempts to rectify the situation, the Moon remained fixated on Rohini. Consequently, Prajapati Daksha cursed the Moon with a debilitating disease that caused him to gradually diminish and ultimately disappear. Seeking solace, the Moon turned to Lord Shiva, who assured him that although he would wax and wane due to the curse, he would regain his full glory before diminishing once more. Thus, the cycle of the waxing and waning phases of the Moon commenced on the Trayodashi Tithi.

The Story of a Devout Brahmin Widow

A poignant tale is told of a poor Brahmin widow with a young son who relied on alms for their sustenance. Devoted to Lord Shiva, the widow regularly observed Pradosh Vrat. One fateful day, while returning home, she discovered a young prince wounded and bloodied, seeking refuge. Moved by compassion, she took him in and raised him as her own son alongside her biological child. As destiny unfolded, the prince married a Gandharva named Anshumati and, with the assistance of his in-laws, regained his kingdom’s throne, rewarding the impoverished Brahmin widow and her son with positions of honor. The widow’s consistent observance of Pradosh Vrat played a pivotal role in the fortuitous turn of events.

Pradosh Vrat serves as a spiritual pathway for devotees to connect with the divine grace of Lord Shiva. By adhering to the prescribed rituals and observing dietary discipline, followers of Lord Shiva can purify their minds, seek blessings, and achieve spiritual growth. The legends associated with Pradosh Vrat further emphasize the significance of this observance, highlighting Lord Shiva’s benevolence and his devotees’ devotion. Thus, the observance of Pradosh Vrat not only promises material and spiritual well-being but also strengthens the bond between humans and the divine realm.

PRADOSH VRAT KATHA AND PUJA VIDHI

Pradosh, also known as Pradosham, is a bimonthly occasion dedicated to Lord Shiva. It falls on the thirteenth day (trayodashi) of every fortnight in the Hindu calendar. It is an auspicious three hour period of twilight considered the best time for Lord Shiva’s worship. Shiva devotees undertake a fast on this day, known as the Pradosh Vrat.

WHY TO OBSERVE PRADOSH VRAT?

It is believed that Lord Shiva is extremely happy during this period and blesses all his devotees and fulfills their wishes during the Pradosh period on Trayodashi day. Shiva devotees perform Pradosh for attaining moksha and fulfilling their dreams.

LEGEND BEHIND PRADOSH

According to the Puranic legend, the Devas (gods) appealed to Lord Shiva in the most conducive muhurta of pradosh to seek his help in defeating the asuras (demons). They ran to Mount Kailash on a Pradosh evening and were received by Nandi, Shiva’s sacred bull. Shiva agreed to help them in defeating the asuras. In this way, the tradition of Shiva worship along with Nandi on trayodashi started and continues to this day.

In another legend, Pradosh is the time when Lord Shiva emerged from his stupor (because of the poison he consumed from the samudra manthan) and danced the tandava on top of his Nandi bull. It is believed that during pradosh time, Shiva is in an ecstatic state and blesses anyone who prays to him.

PRADOSH VRAT KATHA

Pradosh Vrat Katha are engaging and encouraging stories on Pradosham vrat. There are also different Pradosh Vrat stories relating to different types of Pradosh Vrat. Pleased by his devotion and prayers, Lord Shiva blessed him and liberated him of the disease on the day of Trayodashi. This day has been revered as the Trayodashi Pradosh.

Another Pradosh vrat story is about a poor Brahmin widow who used to live with her son, Mangalia in a small town. She once found an injured young prince of Vidarbha on the riverside while returning home after collecting alms and gave shelter to him. The prince had escaped when the enemy had invaded his kingdom. Since the widow Brahmin along with both her son and the prince used to regularly observe Pradosh Vrat on advice of a sage, few courses of events occurred which were fruitful.

The prince once got spotted by a Gandharva (divine being) Anshumati who got fascinated by him and eventually the prince got married to her. Then the prince with help of Gandharva army of his in-laws fought with the enemies and reclaimed his kingdom. As gratitude, he rewarded the widow Brahmin residence in the royal palace and the Prime ministerial post to her son in his kingdom.

Pradosh Vrat is a Hindu festival that is observed on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi Tithi) of both the waxing and waning phases of the moon (Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha) in every lunar month. This festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati, who are worshipped for their blessings of eternal bliss, spiritual upliftment and good health.

The word ‘Pradosh’ means ‘the time of dusk’ or ‘the time of removal of sins’. Devotees who witness this dance or meditate on Lord Shiva during this time are said to attain liberation from their sins and karmas.

The rituals of Pradosh Vrat include fasting from sunrise to sunset, taking a bath in the evening, wearing clean clothes, lighting a lamp or a diya in front of Lord Shiva’s idol or picture, offering flowers, fruits, milk, honey and other items to him, chanting his names and mantras, listening to or reading stories related to him and performing charity works. Also, you need to make sure to offer bael leaves to the lord, as it is considered to be his favourite.

During the puja ceremony, devotees can use this water and the same can be offered alongside the sacred ash (vibhuti) as prasad.

As a symbol of Lord Shiva, the vibhuti can be offered on the forehead.

While keeping Vrat, devotees are advised to keep an eye on sunrise and sunset as these timings can vary from one place to another.

If you check the sunrise and sunset timings at your place of stay, then it becomes easier to know when to start the vrat.

It is a known fact that even a single glance of the deity on this propitious day will end all your sins and bestow you with bountiful blessings and good fortune. Listen to this Pradosh Stotra Ashtakam and Get the blessing of Shiv Shankar. As per Shastra you must take a vow first meaning sankalpa that you will be performing Pradosha through out life, or for 21 years, 11 years, 7 or even 3 or 1 years, nothing less than an year.

Than one has to observe fast all through out day, and worship Lord Shiva in the evening this is utmost part of Vrata, Poojan at temples in Sandhya of Pradosh is mandatory, and than one can have one grain meal, choose wheat or rice, I used to have simple Sattvic with Paratha or Puree. Once food is taken at evening after worshiping Shiva, In day time you can have only fruits. Now I used to do that when I was kind of teenager till college. Than I again started it by greater deeksha and Prashasti,

Now it is ordained to me, in gyan way, food is not imp, worship Sadhana is, I was told by Rishi, himself, that if you wont have substantial food, than worship may take back seat, I was ordained, to do extreme poojas, all through out day and night, at least three times, for me it is not only pooja at sandhya, it has to be Shiva sadhana only all through out day, which i never did, or will do, but it happens, somebody does it, inside, me, Shiva himself now worships himself, I m not found anywhere near.

As I have been ordained, I am ordered to Ordain it to eligible seekers, for those who will be ordained by me, Vrata is not necessary, in fact i say, have some food, but sattvic, like bananas which provide very good energy and than worship after sandhya worship have any food, but sattvic, without onion or garlic, Yet the Crux is you worship him as much as you can. Here also I tell a great secret and gyan again not my property it was also given by my Great Rishis. Yet this works for super extremists only, I was said, you boil a water to 20 degrees everyday, this is daily pooja it is good, very good, for elation one never shall shun it,

Yet daily pooja doesn’t push you much further, you need to boil water to 100 centigrade than only it becomes steam, in same way daily pooja is good, but at least one day in month, dedicate all your energy intensity everything you have push it all together for Shiva, One can chose Pradosha as i do, or can chose Masik Shiva Ratri, that day., continue pooja, as much as you can, do mantra jaap, chant Sanskrit stotras listen to Rudra in Pavitra Awastha, than read shiva puran than do shiva poojan in evening in temple, come home start poojan again, do it, and see just if you do mechanically even the Jeeva would starts evaporating becoming pure bliss of “me ness” silence. and Greater Shivatva.

Those who want enlightenment, there has to be a day, where you go to your extremes as much as you can, for that, I say, food but sattvic can be taken, Shastra says, or say declares,.

before great tapas, Long Yagna Or Long Sadhana one shall have light but energetic food so he can maintain energy needed to chant mantras, read stotras.

At first for a year, i would not make it hustling, but when i see shishya can do more, than I will suggest, take one day at least in month, good if you take two, and I say not more than two, but two days in month, simply name it for Shiva that day nothing but Shakti Shiva, among three sixty five days, if one can not invest mere 24 for his enlightenment, then he is wasting time.

I don’t say start now, do Pradosh for a year as I say, this will make your being high enough, to go for all day pooja, as much as you can.

And more Shishya is willing more, I will give personal time, or even can be with shishya too.

I care for intensity, i could not understand what my guru gets elating me, but now i do, how fulfilled and good masters feel just seeing shishya elated, becoming aloof Gyani, and complete in themselves so that they can guide others too.

This is something about Pradosha the way I do or say the way I was ordained to do it, This pooja is most powerful i say, read the Kathas of Pradosha and see how great tremendous benefits it gives, Specially for sansari Jeeva’s who want Bhog material things and enlightenment both, they must observe Pradosha and worship great mother Shakti and Shiva.

All about Pradosh Vrat!

Pardosha Vrat Explained

The occasion of Pradosh Vrat is believed to be one of the most essential, auspicious, and pure fasting days under Hinduism. It is a Hindu religious festival celebrated twice every month, i.e. once during the Shukla Paksha (bright half of the lunar month) and once during the Krishna Paksha (dark half of the lunar month). It falls on the thirteenth day of both the pakshas, i.e. Trayodashi tithi. Millions of devotees across India and worldwide follow this traditional ritual with joy and happiness.

The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the most revered deities of Hindus and is believed to bring good luck and blessings to those who keep fast on the day. During Pradosh Vrat, devotees fast or remain on empty stomachs from sunrise to sunset and perform puja (worship) to Lord Shiva and his family (Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya, and Nandi). As the word ‘Pardosh’ means ‘related to evening’, the associated pooja is started just a little before sunset and continues after. This Puja is also called Pradosh Puja. The devotees offer milk, honey, fruits, and flowers to the idol’s statue, light lamps and sing devotional songs praising the deity. They visit Lord Shiva temples on this day and perform Abhishekam (ritual bathing of the deity with milk, water, and other sacred substances).

Significance of Pradosh Vrat

Pradosh Vrat is marked as a sacred day for performing charitable acts and making donations to the needy. This is seen as a way of pleasing Lord Shiva and earning his blessings. The true Pradosh Vrat meaning lies in the fact that it is believed to help in the removal of sins and purification of the soul. One can attain mental stability, peace, and calmness by worshipping Lord Shiva. The festival is also seen as a way of strengthening one’s devotion to Lord Shiva and bringing one closer to the divine. The Moon finds an association with the Pradosh dates as the associated ritual is performed in the Sandhyakaal or evening. So, while worshipping Lord Shiva during Pardosh Puja, you are also displaying devotion to the Moon, which is mounted on his head. It is very well mentioned in the renowned ‘Skanda Purana’

Benefits of doing Pradosh Vrat

One who keeps the date and time in mind and does the Pradosh fast, his/her life is believed to flourish forever. Moreover, keeping Pradosh Vrat also corrects the moon’s placement in a Janam kundli. This, in turn, improves health, finances, relationship and work status. Its benefits are not just restricted to the influence of the Moon on human life but to the removal of other planets’ malefic effects too. It is also believed to help resolve marital disputes and suffering. People with major health issues and huge debt are also benefited. Based on Shiva Purana, it also benefits those who are seeking a child, money or dhan and career desires. It is also advised to chant Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times in front of the Shivlinga or Shiva’s shrine as it is said to fulfil all your desires and spiritual alignment. Such is the importance of Pradosh Vrat.

Pradosh Vrat Mythology

Pardosh Vrat Mythology is also famously known as Pradosh Vrat Katha. It takes us to the famous story of “Samudra Mathan” or “Churning of the sea”. The holy Skanda Purana mentions all the Gods and Demons or Devas and Asuras who churned the sea (Samundra Manthan) for Amrit to attain immortality. This was done with the help of the serpent, Vasuki. As a result, poison from the body of Vasuki got scattered in the sea. To save the universe from destruction, Lord Shiva came and drank the whole poison. This day was marked as Pradosh.

What to do on Pradosh Vrat ?

Pradosh Vrat, or fast, is done in two ways, as mentioned in the Hindu Calendar and associated sacred texts. Any method based on your health and capacity can be selected. A priest or pandit can advise you on the best way in this aspect.

One popular Pradosh Vrat Vidhi is to stay up the whole night and just pray to Lord Mahadev or Shiva. This also includes a 24-hour vrat or fast. You break your fast the next day in the morning after taking a bath.

The second way and an easier one is to be on fruits from the morning till evening. And after attaining the aarti in the Pradosh Kaal time ( 90 minutes before sunset to 60 minutes after), you can complete your fasting schedule by eating the Prashad and later with cooked food and water.

Also, depending on the location of your place, Pradosh Kaal meaning and significance has to be kept in mind. It is a duration when Lord Shiva is considered to emerge from his throne and perform yoga poses, and hence doing offerings and puja during this duration pleases him the most.

Pradosh Vrat Katha

The Puranas have mentioned this very interesting Katha of Pradosh Vrat which is associated with the Samudra Manthan advised by Lord Vishnu. The very famous Amrit – which had the capacity to make anybody live forever was extracted from the sea by churning it. The Devtas and Asuras were involved in the churning which produced the Amrit along with a very powerful poison that had the capacity to destroy the entire universe.

This poison had to be destroyed but nobody got a solution for the same. In the end, Lord Shiva came to rescue and he drank the poison Halahala. This made him shout with pain in his throat. To cool down the effect of the poison, Goddess Parvati placed her hands on the throat of Lord Shiva and released him from the suffering. The Devas and Asuras thanked Lord Shiva on Trayodashi tithi. Pleased with the devotion, Lord Shiva is believed to have danced between the horns of Nandi – the bull. The time when Shiva was extremely happy was the Pradosham period or the twilight time of the Trayodashi tithi. Since then that day, Pradosh vrat is observed on Trayodashi tithi by devotees to get the blessing of Lord Shiva.

Pradosh Vrat is a highly auspicious Vrat observed by a phenomenal number of Hindus. This Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Falling on Trayodashi (13th day of the lunar month), this day of Pradosham is celebrated as a grand puja ceremony at all Shiva temples across the nation and even abroad. People observe fasting on this day from the morning and visit the nearest Shiva temple in the evening to witness the holy bath and puja to the main deity and Nandikeshwar after which they conclude their fast.

The sacred story of Pradosham is a highly interesting one. Once there were continuous battles between devas (gods) and asuras (demons). The gods were dying in the hands of the wicked asuras in great numbers. Panicked by this plight, the gods went to the trinity to seek an advice. They were told to churn the ocean to get Amrita (the elixir) of life consuming which they will no more have to die.

Churning the ocean was not possible without the help of many. They also needed the assistance of the asuras. They plucked the Mantra Hill and dropped it in the ocean. Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma (a huge tortoise) to support the mountain on his back. The great snake Vasuki was requested to be the churning rope. Devas and asuras held the tail side and head side of the snake respectively and began churning.

In course of time, the ocean first gave out a deadly poison called Halahala. This was powerful enough to annihilate all the lives on the earth. When all those involved in the churning process could not endure the poisonous hot fumes given out from the poison, they all took refuge in Lord Shiva who appeared in the scene.

Lord Shiva collected the deadly poison of Halahala and consumed it all at once. The blue poison started descending down the Lord’s throat and Mother Parvati held the neck of Lord Shiva with all her grace. The poison stopped in the neck forming a blue spot in the Lord’s neck. For this reason, Lord Shiva is also praised as Neelakanda (the blue necked one).

Devas praised the Lord in all possible ways and tunes. Shiva got enamored by their songs and praises and started dancing in ecstasy standing in between the two horns of his divine bull Nandikeshwara. The ecstatic dance of the Lord happened during Pradosha (twilight time) of Trayodasi (thirteenth day of the lunar month) and therefore this day became a highly auspicious one dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva.

Pradosh Vrat: Katha, Dates, Puja Vidhi and Mantras

Pradosh Vrat is a Hindu fast that is observed on the Trayodashi tithi (13th day) of each lunar fortnight, which occurs twice a month, once during the waxing moon period (Shukla Paksha) and once during the waning moon (Krishna Paksha).

The word “Pradosh” refers to the period of twilight just after sunset and is considered to be an auspicious time to worship Lord Shiva, one of the most revered deities in Hindu dharma.

Both Sukhla Trayodashi and Krishna Trayodashi (bimonthly occasion) are observed with great devotion by many Hindus, especially those who follow the Shaivite sect of Sanatan Dharma. The fast is believed to have numerous spiritual and physical benefits and is considered to be a way to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and attain spiritual growth.

Pradosh Vrat for Lord Shiva
According to Skanda Purana, the devas (gods) and asuras (demons) once decided to churn the ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, which they believed was hidden in its depths.

They approached Lord Vishnu for help, who advised them to use Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki, the king of serpents, as the rope. The Devas and Asuras agreed to work together to achieve their common goal.

As they began to churn the ocean, the first thing to emerge was a deadly poison, which threatened to destroy the entire universe. Lord Shiva, the lord of destruction, came forward and drank the poison to save the universe from destruction.

This event is known as the “Samudra Manthan,” and Lord Shiva is believed to have consumed the poison during the Pradosh period, making Pradosh Vrat a significant day for worshiping Lord Shiva and seeking his blessings.

In another story, All devas (Hindu gods) decided to appeal to Lord Shiva to defeat powerful demons. They marched to Mount Kailash, where they were received by sacred bull, Nandi. Nandi on behalf of Devas, requested Lord Shiva to defeat all demons, to which Lord Shiva agreed. The timing Shiv agreed was Trayodashi, thus beginning the trend of having a Pradosha Vrat by worshipping Lord Shiva and Nandi.

Pradosh Vrat Stories (Vrat Katha)

1. The Helpless Prince

In ancient India, there lived a Brahmin priest who was very poor and struggled to make ends meet for himself, his wife, and their son. Unfortunately, one day, the priest passed away, leaving his wife and son helpless and with no means of sustenance. The widow was forced to beg for food to feed her child and herself.

One day, while returning home after collecting alms, the woman saw a handsome man who was wounded and lying on the side of the road. Being kind-hearted, she took him to her humble abode and nursed his wounds.

She offered him whatever little food she had to eat, and he gratefully accepted. The prince was named Dharmagupta, and he started living with the woman and her son in their small house.

While living there, Dharmagupta observed the widow performing the Pradosh Vrat. He inquired about the significance of the vrata and learned about its importance. From that day onwards, he also started performing the Pradosh Vrat with devotion.

Dharmagupta was, in reality, the prince of Vidarbha who had lost his kingdom due to an enemy’s attack. His father had been imprisoned, and he had barely managed to escape. He was wandering aimlessly when the kind-hearted widow took him in.

After a few days, thanks to the widow’s care, Dharmagupta recovered and regained his strength. One day, while wandering in a jungle, he met a beautiful Gandharva princess named Anshumati, who fell in love with him. She informed her parents, and Lord Shiva appeared in their dream and instructed them to marry Anshumati to Dharmagupta.

As per Lord Shiva’s instruction, Anshumati and Dharmagupta got married. With the help of the Gandharva army, Dharmagupta defeated his enemies and rescued his father from prison. He then took the poor woman who had helped him to the palace and offered her a comfortable life. He also made her son the prime minister of his kingdom.

Therefore, it is believed that performing the Pradosh Vrat brings the grace of Lord Shiva and can change one’s fate. Dharmagupta’s life turned around for the better after he began performing the Pradosha Vrata, and everyone should strive to do the same.

2. Vritrasura

During a battle, the gods found themselves incapable of vanquishing Asura Vritrasura. As a result, they approached their guru, Brihaspati, for guidance.

Brihaspati informed them that Vritrasura was a king named Chitraratha in his previous life. Once, he was flying over Mount Kailash in his airplane when he saw Goddess Parvati sitting on Lord Shiva’s lap. He scornfully laughed and mocked them, which enraged Parvati. She cursed him to be reborn as a demon, which led to his birth as Vritrasura.

Brihaspati suggested Lord Indra perform the Guru Pradosh Vrat if he desired to defeat Vritrasura. Following this advice, Indra observed the Guru Pradosha Vrata and emerged triumphant over Vritrasura.

3. Chandra Deva was saved by Lord Shiva

Once, the Moon God (also known as Soma or Chandra dev) married 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati, but he had a special love for Rohini and neglected his other wives. As a result, his other wives complained to Daksha about this.

Daksha advised Chandra to treat all his wives equally, but he did not pay heed to his advice. Enraged, Daksha cursed him with a wasting disease, which began to affect Chandra’s body instantly. However, this was catastrophic for the world, and the gods sought Lord Brahma’s help to find a solution.

Lord Brahma advised Chandra to worship Lord Shiva in the form of a lingam, and Chandra did penance for six months. Lord Shiva appeared before him in the form of a Jyotirlinga and blessed Chandra, thereby reducing his curse (Chandra’s curse was not lifted completely as he had committed a significant sin previously).

Lord Shiva told Chandra that he would decline day by day in one fortnight and increase steadily in another to increase the glory of the region and the moon. Lord Shiva also stayed there in the form of Someshwara.

Chandra received Lord Shiva’s blessing on the day of Trayodashi during Pradosha Kaal, which is now considered the best time to worship Lord Shiva.

Pradosh Vrat Katha – The Stories Behind Pradosh Vrat

There are different Pradosh Vrat Katha (stories) behind why the Pradosh Vrat is observed. Pradosh Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva and falls on Trayodashi (the thirteenth day of every fortnight) of the Hindu calendar. People observe fast and do some rituals on this day. Worshipping Lord Shiva during the Pradosha Kaal brings his grace upon the devotee.

Pradosh Vrat Katha:

There are many stories behind why the Pradosh Vrat is celebrated, and why it is celebrated on the thirteenth day only. The story of a prince and a beggar woman is the most popular among them.

The Prince and Priest’s Wife:

Once upon a time in India, there was a poor Brahmin priest who used to perform puja to make ends meet. He had a wife and a son. One day, in an unfortunate event, he lost his life leaving behind his wife and son without anyone to look after them. The priest’s wife had no other option than to beg to feed her son and herself.

Once, she was returning home after collecting some alms when she saw a handsome but wounded man at the side of the road. The wife of the priest was very kind. She took pity on him and brought him to her home. She cared for his wounds and gave him whatever she had to eat. The prince started living with the woman and her son in her small house.

In her house, he saw her doing Pradosha Vrat. He asked her about it and came to know about its importance. Therefore, he also started doing Pradosh Vrat.

The wounded man was actually the prince of Vidarbha, Dharmgagupta, who had lost his kingdom because of an enemy’s attacks. His enemies had also imprisoned his father. The prince somehow had managed to escape from the attack and was wandering here and there aimlessly.

After some days, because of the care of the priest’s wife, the prince recovered and returned to the pink of his health. Once when he was wandering in a jungle, a beautiful Gandharva princess named Anshumati saw him and fell in love with him. She told her parents about him. Lord Shiva appeared in their dream and told them to marry Anshumati to Dharmagupta.

Therefore, they got Anshumati and Dharmagupta married. After that, Dharmagupta defeated his enemies with the help of Gandharva’s army and released his father from prison. Then he brought the poor woman who helped him to the palace and made her stay there. Then he made her son the prime minister of his kingdom.

Thus, the prince’s fate changed after he started doing Pradosha Vrat. Therefore, everyone should do this vrata and get the grace of Lord Shiva.

Samudra Manthan:

When gods and demons started to churn the ocean of milk to get Amrita (elixir of life), the first thing that appeared from the sea was Halahala (poison). This poison was so deadly that it could destroy all the creation. Therefore, gods and demons requested Lord Shiva to help them. Lord Shiva accepted their request and drank Halahala.

Thus, because of Lord Shiva, the three worlds were saved. Therefore, all gods and demons started praising him. Lord Shiva got very pleased with this and performed tandava. The day and time this incident took place were Trayodashi Tithi and Pradosh Kaal. Therefore, it is believed that Lord Shiva is in a very good mood during this time and blesses whoever worships him during this particular time.

Vritrasura:
There are different versions of the story of Vritrasura. He was a valiant demon and had propitiated Lord Shiva with his austerity. Once in a war, the gods found it difficult to defeat him. So, they approached Brihaspati, their guru.

Brihaspati told them that in his previous life, Vritrasura was a king named Chitraratha. Once, he was flying over Mount Kailash in his airplane when he saw Goddess Parvati sitting on the lap of Lord Shiva.

Seeing this, he laughed and made fun of them. Goddess Parvati got very angry and cursed him that he would be born a demon. Therefore, he was born Vritrasura.

Brihaspati advised Indra to do Guru Pradosh Vrat if he wanted to defeat Vritrasura. Therefore, Indra performed the Guru Pradosh Vrat and defeated Vritrasura.

Lord Shiva Saved Moon God:

The Moon God (Soma or Chandra) married 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati, but he paid more attention only to Rohini. His other 26 wives complained to Daksha about this. Daksha told Chandra to give equal attention to all his wives, but he did not listen. The infuriated Daksha cursed him that he would fall prey to the wasting disease. The body of Chandra started wasting immediately, but this was diabolical for the world. Therefore, the gods went to Lord Brahma for a solution, who advised Chandra to worship Lord Shiva in the form of a lingam.

Chandra did penance for six months. Propitiated Lord Shiva appeared there in the form of a Jyotirlinga and blessed Chandra and reduced his curse (Because Chandra had sinned greatly previously, he did not clear his curse completely). He told him that he would decline day by day in one fortnight and increase steadily in another. For increasing the glory of the region and the moon, Lord Shiva stayed there in the form of Someshwara.

Lord Shiva blessed Chandra on the day of Trayodashi during Pradosha Kaal. Therefore, the Pradosha Kaal is considered the best to worship Lord Shiva.

The Pradosh vrat can be observed by all irrespective of the age and gender. People in different parts of the country observe this vrat with full devotion and dedication. This Vrat is observed in honour of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati.

In some parts of India, disciples worship the Nataraj form of Lord Shiva on this day. As per the Skanda Puran there are two different methods of fasting on the Pradosh vrat. In the first method, the devotes observe strict fast for whole day and night, that is, 24 hours and which also includes keeping a vigil at night. In the second method the fasting is observed from the sunrise until sunset, and the fast is broken after worshipping Lord Shiva in the evening.

The word ‘pradosh’ in Hindi means ‘belonging or relating to the evening’ or ‘first part of the night’. As this sacred vrat is observed during the ‘Sandhyakaal’ that is the evening twilight, it is called as the Pradosh vrat.

According to the Hindu mythology it is believed that on the auspicious day of Pradosh, Lord Shiva together with Goddess Parvati feels extremely delighted, pleased and generous. Therefore the followers of Lord Shiva keep a fast and worship their deity on this chosen day to seek divine blessings.

  • In some places, the worship of the Shivling is also performed. The Shivling is given a bath with sacred substances like milk, curd and ghee. Puja is performed and the devotees offer Bilva leaves on the Shivling. Some people also use a picture or painting of Lord Shiva for worshipping. It is believed that offering Bilva leaves on the day of Pradosh vrat is highly auspicious.
  • After this ritual, the devotees listen to the Pradosh vrat katha or read stories from the Shiva Purana.
