Lord Budha Dev

When the father of a baby is Som Dev, also known as Chandra Dev (the Moon Lord) and the mother is known as Tara (meaning “star”), the baby is bound to be a beautiful and luminescent one. And that is exactly how people and the Gods would describe God Budha dev (Lord Mercury) when he was born. It is said that Lord Chandra, being flirtatious of nature, had lured Tara, the wife of Brihaspati (represented by the planet Jupiter) and had an affair with her. The result of this affair was Budha Dev. Because of the way he was conceived, Budha Dev felt a lot of remorse, guilt, and anger towards his biological father. But before we get to that, let’s look at what happened to the rest of the world of devas and asuras because of the affair between Tara and Chandra.

The Story Of Budha Graha In Hinduism

Brishapati was angered because of the way Chandra behaved with his wife and waged a war against him. He was joined by Lord Indra and the rest of the devtas while Lord Chandra was supported by Guru Shukracharya, the guru of asuraas. The war went on for a long time, and Lord Brahma became concerned that this war, also known as Tarakamaayam, would result in the destruction of the entire universe. He stepped in and managed to separate the two key fighters, admonished Lord Chandra for his behaviour and packed off Tara along with Brihaspati back to the place where she belonged. The child Budha Dev was brought up, by large accounts, by Lord Chandra. But there are certain versions, which refer to the bringing up of Budha Dev by his adoptive father, Brihaspati.

As mentioned earlier, BudhaDev was in a turmoil of emotions because of the stigma that was attached to the events before and after his birth. Although a beautiful child, who inherited a part of his radiant beauty from his father Lord Chandra, he was not happy with the way his life was proceeding and instead chose to do penance in the form of rigorous meditation for a number of years. Lord Vishnu was very pleased with the dedication and purity of the devotee’s feelings and made an appearance before him. He bestowed upon BudhaDev the gift of knowledge – that of all the Vedas and arts. However, in the versions in which Brihaspati is said to have raised BudhaDev, it is mentioned that it was he who imparted all the knowledge to his son, and thus, be became a learned God, who is of great importance to traders or merchants, teachers, consultants, writers, lawyers, and to those involved in various forms of arts and sports. Budha Dev’s influence on a person is evident in his/her speech pattern, agility in communication and humour and thinking process. The mantra one can chant praising BudhaDev, the Lord of “buddhi”, 108 times is:

“Om Braam Breem Braum Sah: Budhay Namah”

This mantra is said to help those people who are suffering from a malefic effect of the Budha graha, which is caused when the gentle Budha is under the influence of other malefic planets.

Budh Graha, Mercury, is one among the navagrahas, nine planets, as per Hinduism. The movement of Budh Grah in a horoscope is very important in Hindu astrology. The story of the birth of Budha is of great importance as the story also gives suggestions regarding women’s freedom to move away from a bad marriage. Budh is the son of Sage Brihaspati and Tara. But he was fathered by Chandra, the Hindu Moon God.

Sage Brihaspati was the Guru of the Devas and he was only interested in rituals and studies. The Sage never showed any interest in Tara. A disillusioned Tara soon fell in love with Chandra and abandoned her husband.

Indra, the king of Devas, once decided to conduct a yajna to get stronger to face the Asuras or demons.

Sage Brihaspati used this as an opportunity and said that he can only perform the yajna with his wife by his side.

The Devas were divided on the issue. Some saw no reason in Tara returning to a husband who only needed her for rituals. They argued that Tara should remain with Chandra, who valued her as a living being.
But the Devas could not stop the yajna, so Indra decided that Tara should return to Brihaspati. Tara returned reluctantly and the yajna was completed successfully.

But soon it was discovered that Tara was pregnant. Both Chandra and Brihaspati claimed to be the father. Tara kept quiet. But as the debate raged, the unborn child cried out – and wanted to know who his father was?

All that gathered there were amazed by the desire of the child. The gods declared that he will be Budh – the lord that rules the intellect.

Tara answered to Budh that Chandra was his father.

Sage Brihaspati could not tolerate the events and he cursed that the child that Chandra fathered will be neither male nor female but a neuter gender.

Indra who witnessed this event chided Sage Brihaspati and said that Budh will be known as Sage’s son. From that day it was decided no matter who fathered the child, the child will be always known as the son of the husband.

Tara in due course gave birth to Budh (Mercury).

Budh Grah Story – The Story Of Mercury: The Third Navagraha

Navagraha is the nine heavenly bodies and deities that influence human life on earth according to Hinduism and Hindu astrology, this article will narrate to you the various aspects and stories associated with the third of the Navagraha ‘Budh’. Budh is the Navagraha deity that rules the planet which is closest to the sun in the solar system Mercury. Wednesday, also known as Budhvar, is dedicated to this planet.

1. Budhdev
Budh or Mercury is depicted as having four hands bearing a sword, a Thaal, a Gadda in his three hands, and the fourth hand in a Varmudra position. Lord Budh has a golden crown on his head and wears ornaments of yellow flowers and yellow clothes. He is the most intelligent planet of all and he removes all the obstacles of those who worship him. As far as possible he causes no inauspicious events, but rather creates prosperity for everyone.

2. Budh’s Birth
Budh’s mother Tara was married to Brihaspati, but his biological father is Chandra. The story behind the birth of Budh goes as follows: once Chandra decided to perform the greatest of Yagyas, Rajasuya Yagya. Chandra requested the Deva guru Brihaspati to preside as the main priest to perform the Yagya. Due to some reason, Brihaspati could not make it and asked his wife Tara to preside over the Yagya, as the Yagya was progressing. Chandra began to attain a more beautiful form.

His divine beauty kept increasing to such an extent that all the apsaras and including the deva guru’s wife, Tara, began to fall for Chandra’s beauty, Tara returned home pregnant and everybody questioned whose child was in her womb. Tara revealed that the child in her womb is of Chandra, the moon god listening to this Brihaspati, was infuriated and cursed the child that he would be an androgynous being meaning one who is genderless.

3. Budh and his father Chandra
It also explains why Budh is not friendly with the moon in astrology. For this reason, when Budh is conjunct with the moon in the birth chart it is said to disturbing and discriminating. There is a story on how Mercury or Budh became genderless growing up when Budh heard about the story behind his birth and how he was not a legitimate child he grieved for a while about his misfortune. He then decided to leave home and went to the Himalayas to meditate and live there Budh meditated upon lord Narayan and did severe penance to receive his blessings. Having been blessed by Narayan, he grew up to be a wise and handsome man filled with radiance.

One day an apsara descended from the heavens and spotted Budh and fell in love with him. She was ready to give away herself to him. Budh remembering his own story of how such indulgences result in illegitimate children was very firm in his mind that he will not commit the same mistake as his father Chandra. Thus, he turned down Apsara’s proposal.

4. Apsara Cursed Budh
This angered the Apsara and she cursed Budh that he be transformed into a ******. This explained Budh’s role as the go-between one’s emotional, mind and higher mind. He occupies the middle ground. The discriminating practical worldly intellect Budh is often depicted as a deity with green skin holding a mace and a shield in three of his forearms. The ambiguous gender identity of the green skin deity is also in a way reflected in their choice of Vahana, Budh rides a Yaali which is a combination of a beast-like animal with parts of an elephant, lion, horse, and sometimes a bird.

5. Budh’s Intellect
The theme of fluidity and ambiguity is also maintained with Budh’s consort Ela, a gender-fluid goddess who transitions into a man from a woman and vice versa after every month. Mercury or Budh is the planet of intellect and communication. It can be seen in the morning and evening as a shining star following the sun and sometimes even during the day because of its power of radiation.

Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system, Budh rules, education, writers, lecturers, artists, teachers, traders, and businessmen. It rules intelligence, speech, self-confidence, humor, wit, astrology, mathematics, and short journeys.

Budha graha is one among the Navagrahas, and he is the planet Mercury. He is mentioned in various Puranas and in Vedas.

Budha is the son of Lord Chandra and Ma Tara. His consort is Ila, and his son is Pururavas, and he resides in the Budha Loka. He is an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, and due to his sincere devotion and meditation on him, he has become a noble planet, and he is still meditating on Lord Vishnu from the Budha Mandala. He is the god of Wednesday, and according to an ancient Tamil proverb, “EVEN WE CAN GET GOLD EASILY, BUT GETTING THE AUSPICIOUS WEDNESDAY IS VERY DIFFICULT, AND HENCE WE SHOULD PROPERLY UTILIZE THAT PIOUS DAY”. He is having the powers to control our mind, and would make us to turn in the spiritual path.

Mercury is the smallest planet and he was worshipped by the ancient Greece people in a different name and in a different form. As per the observance of space researchers and scientists, Mercury is far away from the earth, and the planet contains no living beings, and there are no proper facilities in the planet. Everywhere in the planet, severe sand storm would occur frequently, and it is a lonely planet.

But according to our Puranas, Budha Mandala appears very beautiful similar to the other planets. And there are huge palaces which contains all the luxuries items. Excepting a few like Narada, Dhruva and Lord Daksha, nobody can easily go there, without getting the permission of Lord Budha Bhagavan. Along with him, his consort and his children are also living in the divine world. He is surrounded with some sages and divine demi gods, and they are praising his glories. Those who reside in the Budha Loka, would not suffer from hunger, thirst, diseases and from any other problems in their lives.

Budha is considered as a soft spoken and a humble demi god, and he used to move gently with others. Being the staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu, he would bless the devotees of Vishnu, and would give goodness in their lives. He is always protected by Vishnu, and hence he cannot be defeated or destroyed by anyone. We can chant his mantra, “OM SRI BUDHA BHAGAVANE NAMAHA”, in order to get all kinds of prosperity in our lives.

How to Use the Mercury Yantra ?

Yantras are great cosmic conductors of energy, an antenna of Nature, a powerful tool for harmony, prosperity, success, good health, yoga and meditation! Yantras consist of a series of geometric patterns. The eyes and mind concentrate at the center of the yantra to achieve higher levels of consciousness. Yantras are usually made out of copper.

Place the Yantra facing the East or the North in a clean and sacred altar.
Do not let other people touch the Yantra.
Periodically wash the Yantra with rose water or milk. Then, rinse it with water and wipe it to dry. The Yantra’s color may change over a period of time; however this does not dilute the power of the Yantra.
Place rounded dots of sandalwood paste on the 4 corners and in the center of the Yantra.
Light a candle or ghee lamp and an incense stick in front of the Yantra. You can offer fresh or dry fruits as Prasad, as well.
