What is Krishna Chaturdashi?

Know The Types And Benefits

Krishna Chaturdashi, also known as Chaturdashi Tithi in the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) of the lunar month, is a significant day in Hinduism. In the Hindu lunar calendar, Chaturdashi is the fourteenth day of the lunar fortnight. The Krishna Chaturdashi that falls during the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) is associated with several religious and spiritual observances. The upcoming month  Krishan Paksha Chaturdashi falls on November 11 from 1:58 pm to Nov 12, 2:45 pm.

How many Chaturdashi falls in a year?

In a lunar calendar, which is followed in Hinduism, there are typically 12 months in a year, and each month has one Krishna Chaturdashi and one Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi. The Krishna Chaturdashi falls in the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the lunar month, while the Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi falls in the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the lunar month. Therefore, there are 12 Krishna Chaturdashis and 12 Shukla Paksha Chaturdashis in a lunar year. These Chaturdashi dates may vary each year in the Gregorian calendar due to the differences between the lunar and solar calendars.

What Does Krishna Paksha Mean?

Krishna Paksha is a term used in the Hindu lunar calendar to refer to the second fortnight of the lunar month, in which the moon is waning or fading. The first fortnight of the waxing or brightening moon is known as Sukla Paksha.

The name has Sanskrit roots, with krishna meaning “dark” and paksha meaning “side”. This refers to the fact it happens on the “dark side” of the full moon. Krishna Paksha is also sometimes called Vadhya Paksha.

Krishna Paksha

Krishna Paksha is considered by some to be inauspicious or ashubh, because it is the period when the moon loses light. On the other hand, Sukla Paksha is regarded as auspicious or shubham, as it is the brightening moon is said to be favourable to growth and development on all planes of existence – mental, physical and spiritual.

However, some interpret the astrology as meaning that the period from the 10th day of Sukla Paksha to the 5th day of Krishna Paksha is most auspicious. During this time the moon is at its brightest.

These considerations may come into play for followers of Hindu astrology when they are choosing special dates such as marriage date, buying a house or naming a new baby.

WHY IS KRISHNA CHATURDASI CURSED?

Why is it so cruel to those born on this day? Why does it damage relationships? Here is the story of why Krishna Chaturdasi and Amavasya are inauspicious.

However, before we get to the story, here’s some background on the two planets intertwined in this curse.

Moon and Venus are associated with the Jala tattva (Water element). The Moon is an emotionally supercharged planet with little power to discriminate and cannot control strong urges caused due to the Jala tattva, including sexual desires. Venus also quickly gives into temptations due to its Jala tattva.

According to legend, the Moon kidnapped his Guru Brihaspati’s (Jupiter) wife Maa Tara on Krishna Chaturdasi. It incensed Lord Shiva because cheating a Guru is a despicable act. Lord Shiva is the protector of lineage, and an upholder of knowledge (Parmeshti Guru) and this violation by the Moon was unforgivable. This was not all. On Amavasya, the Moon forced himself on Maa Tara, and Mahadev (Lord Shiva) cursed it, because of which the Moon lost its light. Condemned to darkness, the Moon repented for its sins on Pratipadā (the first day after Amavasya) and returned Maa Tara to Brihaspati.

Due to the violation of Maa Tara on Amavasya, Maa Kali the Protector also cursed the Moon and those born on this Tithi. (Please watch my video on Amavasya below).

HOW CAN THE CURSE BE REMOVED?

The power to remove the curse of Krishna Chaturdasi lies with Lord Shiva, and the native must appease the deity to get rid of it. They must do the remedy for a minimum of one year.

NOTE: The precise remedies are based on the individual’s chart.

  • The best time to start is on Maha Shivratri, which falls on the night of Krishna Chaturdasi. Venus rules this Tithi and hence is a part of the story, so the curse impacts relationships.
  • The native must perform remedy from one Shivratri to the next (one year).
  • The native must chant the Panchakshari (Five-syllable) mantra ॐ नमः शिवाय: (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) at least three malas daily (11 rounds recommended). One mala is 108 counts.

On Pratipadā Tithi, Chandra asked for forgiveness. Hence this Tithi is an excellent day to chant Agni or Gayatri Mantra and seek forgiveness.

Sankata Hara Chaturthi

Sankashti Chaturthi (संकष्टी चतुर्थी) also known as Sankata Hara Chaturthi is an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This day is celebrated in every Lunar month or Hindu calendar month on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase or the waning phase)

There are two types of chathurthi. One is sukla patksha chathurthi which comes after New moon day and the other one is krishna patksha chathurthi that comes after Full moon day.

In Krishna patksha chathurthi Lord Ganesha’s pooja should be performed in the evening when the moon rises in the sky after keeping upvaas (Fasting) for the whole day. This pooja is completed only after giving arkya to lord Chandra. This is called sankatahara chathurthi pooja. It is believed that the person who does this pooja will get relieved from all their worries and troubles.

Ganapati Atharvasheersha: Before moonlight the Ganapati Atharvasheersha is recited to invoke the blessings of Lord Ganesha.

Angarika Chaturth (अंगारिका चतुर्थी) is a Sankashti Chaturthi falling on Tuesday. It is considered highly auspicious among all Sankashti Chaturthi days.

According to Hindu teachings, Angarak the son of Mother Earth and Bharadwaj Rishi, was an accomplished rishi and a great devotee of Lord Ganesha. He worshipped Lord Ganesha and sought his blessings. On Magh Krishna Chaturthi (the day was Tuesday), Lord Ganesha blessed him and asked him for a wish. Angarak expressed that his only wish was to be associated with Lord Ganesha’s name for forever. The Lord granted his wish and proclaimed that whoever worships Lord Ganesha on Angarika Chaturthi will be granted all that he/ she prays for. From that day onwards, Magh Krishna Chaturthi came to be known as Angarak Chaturthi.
