About Pradosh Vrat:

Pradosh Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva which falls on the 13th day or Trayodashi of the lunar fortnight.

Pradosh occurs during the two different phases of the moon waxing and waning as per the traditional Hindu calendar.

A Pradosh vrat falling on a Monday is known as Soma Pradosh or Chandra Pradosh.

If it falls on a Tuesday, then it is known as Bhauma Pradosh, and Pradosh occurring on a Saturday is called Shani Pradosh.

Among all the Pradosh vrats, the Soma Pradosh and Shani Pradosh are the most significant.

On Pradosh day, the fast is observed from sunrise until sunset.

Significance of Pradosh Vrat:

According to the Shiva Puranas, fasting during Pradosh is regarded as highly auspicious as devotees would be blessed with wealth, prosperity, happiness and honour.

While the fast is undertaken by all Shiva devotees, women who have been longing for a child specially observe this vrat.

Praying to Lord Shiva liberates the devotee from all his previous and present sins and evil deeds.

Legend: As per a legend, Lord Shiva is believed to have consumed the Hala-Hala poison during Pradosh. This poison was mixed with the Ocean of Milk.

Another myth relates this vrat with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

On the day of Trayodashi during the evening twilight, the couple is said to be in a propitious and favourable mood.

Hence, all prayers and desires demanded by a loyal devotee are easily fulfilled.

Another folk-lore has it that a Brahmin woman came to Sage Shandilya with an orphan boy Dharmagupta.

He was a prince, whose father was killed in a battle.

They took Pradosh Vrat as per the instruction of Shandilya.

After few years, Dharmagupta married a princess.

With the help of her father, the Dharmagupta conquered his region back.

It shows the importance of Pradosh Vrat as it helps to attain victory.

Rituals/ Celebrations:

Offering Bael or Bilva leaves during to Lord Shiva during Pradosh vrat is considered auspicious. Lord Shiva devotees observe the fast on both Pradosha days in a month. Staunch devotees prefer to be on the water.

They consume the ‘prasad’ offered in the evening. Such devotees eat cooked food from next day morning.

Another method of fasting is by eating fruits and cooked food on the Pradosh day after the evening prayers.

The strictness of the Pradosh fasting is decided by the devotee.

Some devotees do not fast but worship Lord Shiva during Pradosh or visit temples.

Story Behind The Pradosh Vrat:
The Unbearable Suffering Of A Prince: During ancient times, there was a poor priest.

After the death of that priest, his widowed wife and son begged alms for their living throughout the day and returned home in the evening.

One day, the widow met the prince of the Vidarbha region, because he was wandering there after the death of his father.

The priest’s widow was not able to bear the suffering of the prince, and hence she brought him to her house and looked after him just like her son.

Shandilya Rishi Narrates How Lord Shiva Observed The Pradosh Vrat: One day, the widow took both sons to the ashram of Shandilya Rishi.

There, she heard the story and rituals of Shiva’s Pradosh fast from the sage.

The Prince Encounters The Gandharva Girls: After a few days, both the children were playing in the forest when they encountered some Gandharva girls.

While the priest’s son returned home, the prince started talking with them.

One of the girl’s name was Anshumati. On that day, the prince returned home late.

The Prince Of Vidarbha Identified: On the next day, the prince visited the same place, and found that Anshumati was talking with her parents, who identified the prince and told him that he was the Prince of Vidarbha Nagar and that his name was Dharmagupt.

Anshumati’s parents liked the prince and said that by the grace of Lord Shiva they would like to marry their daughter to him, and asked him if he was ready.

The Prince Of Vidarbha Marries Gandharva Girl Anshumati: The prince gave his approval and the marriage took place.

Later, the prince attacked Vidarbha with a huge army of Gandharvas.

He won the fierce battle and began to rule Vidarbha.

Later, he brought the priest’s widow and her son with respect to his palace.

Hence, all their grief and poverty ended and they started living happily, and the credit was attributed to the Pradosh fast. We need money in life to fulfill our wants and wishes.

The very famous Amrit – which had the capacity to make anybody live forever was extracted from the sea by churning it.

The Devtas and Asuras were involved in the churning which produced the Amrit along with a very powerful poison that had the capacity to destroy the entire universe.

This poison had to be destroyed but nobody got a solution for the same.

This made him shout with pain in his throat.

To cool down the effect of the poison, Goddess Parvati placed her hands on the throat of Lord Shiva and released him from the suffering.

The Devas and Asuras thanked Lord Shiva on Trayodashi tithi.

Pleased with the devotion, Lord Shiva is believed to have danced between the horns of Nandi – the bull.

The time when Shiva was extremely happy was the Pradosham period or the twilight time of the Trayodashi tithi.

During the churning process, various divine objects and beings emerged from the ocean.

One of these objects was a pot of poison (Halahala), which had the potential to destroy all creation.

The poison was so toxic that its fumes began to engulf the entire universe, posing a grave threat to all living beings.

Witnessing the impending disaster, Lord Shiva came to the rescue.

To protect the world, Lord Shiva decided to consume the poison. However, Goddess Parvati, being concerned for her beloved husband’s well-being, held Lord Shiva’s throat tightly to prevent the poison from going down into his body.

As a result, the poison stayed in Lord Shiva’s throat, turning it blue.

This event earned Lord Shiva the name “Neelakantha,” meaning the one with a blue throat.

Hindu mythology for Pradosh Vrat:

According to Hindu mythology, there is a story associated with the significance of Pradosh Vrat.

The story revolves around the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) by the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) to obtain the nectar of immortality (Amrita).

The incident took place during the twilight period on the 13th day of the lunar fortnight. Since then, this auspicious period, known as Pradosh Kaal, is considered highly significant for Lord Shiva worship.

Devotees believe that observing a fast and offering prayers during this time can invoke Lord Shiva’s blessings and protection.

The Pradosh Vrat, which is observed on the 13th day of both the waxing (Shukla Paksha) and waning (Krishna Paksha) phases of the lunar month, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Devotees observe the fast, perform puja (worship), offer prayers, and recite mantras to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

It is believed that observing this vrat with devotion and sincerity can bring spiritual upliftment, prosperity, and the fulfillment of desires.

Thus, the story behind Pradosh Vrat highlights Lord Shiva’s selflessness and his willingness to bear the burden of the poison for the well-being of the universe, making the observance of Pradosh Vrat a significant and revered practice among Lord Shiva’s devotees.

Pradosh Vrat Story

Numerous significant stories are attached to this divine fast. The story that is widely spread is of Lord Shiva. In ancient times, there was a war raging between Devtas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons). Devtas were losing and many of them had already lost their lives. Hence, they ran to Brahma-Vishu-Mahesh asking for help. Devtas were advised to swirl the ocean to gain the amrut (holy nectar) that will make them immortal. However, they weren’t sufficient in numbers to churn the ocean. Hence, they asked the help of Asuras to whirl the ocean and in return promised to give them their share of nectar.

When they started to churn the ocean, the first thing to come out was Halahala (poison). The poison was deadly enough to kill every being on the earth including the devas and asuras. Hence, Lord Shiva came to their rescue and swallowed the poison. Goddess Parvati then, with all her might, held the throat of the Lord to prevent it from going in his stomach, keeping it in his throat. Blessed by the mightiness of the supreme deity, the devas and asuras started singing praises for him to show their regards and gratitude. Pleased by them, Lord Shiva danced on the head of his supreme bull Nandikeshwara between its two horns. Hence, from that day, Pradosh Vrat is observed to worship and please Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Methods To Observe Pradosh Vrat

There are two ways to observe a fast as per the criteria of Skanda Puran.

  1. The first method is when an individual fasts for 24 hours, including the day and the night without consuming water or food. He also has to stay awake at night to worship Lord Shiva.
  2. The second method is not so strict and the individual has to observe a fast only from sunrise to sunset. He can break the fast by worshipping Lord Shiva and reading the Pradosh Vrat Katha after sunset.

Pradosh Vrat Rituals and Mantra to Perform Puja

  • The worshippers have to take a bath, one hour prior to the sunset and prepare themselves for the puja. This puja is performed to worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, God Kartik, and Lord Ganesha. After the puja, Lord Shiva is called on in a water-filled ‘Kalasha’ (holy pot), which is placed on darbha grass (Desmostachya bipinnata).
  • People at some places also worship Shivling by bathing it with milk, ghee, and curd. They also offer Bilva (Aegle marmelos) leaves as it is considered auspicious.
  • Moreover, the people also hear the Pradosh Vrat Katha or recite stories from the Shiva Purana. The ritual includes chanting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times after this. Once the puja is ended, the Kalash water and the sacred ash are applied on the forehead of all the worshipers.

During this day, chanting ‘OM’ in Shiva temples removes over a crore doshas. Maha pradosham that comes twice a year, is called Arthanari Pradosham. These pradosh vrat dates are said to be beneficial for separated couples when they perform the vidhi with dedication. Maha pradosham that comes thrice a year is called Thirikarana. Importance of observing Pradosha

The importance of observing Pradosha is mentioned in the Pradosha Mahatmiyam from Shiva Purana; hence, Pradosha puja is considered to be highly auspicious among others by the devotees of Lord Shiva. This particular time on Trayodashi holds a lot of promise when praying to Lord Shiva, known as the destroyer, and his spouse Goddess Parvathi. It is supposed that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi are incredibly delighted and generous on this particular day, and all universal beings and gods come down to earth to attend the worship. These times represent the windows of opportunity to remove Karmic energies that limit our potential in this current life.

Significance

As per Shiva Purana, Pradosh Vrat liberates devotees from all the past and present sins and all negativities. It is believed that if you observe the Pradosham with full devotion and dedication, your demands will be fulfilled by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. When struggling with tough times and seeking peace of mind, following the fast will awaken your soul and help you achieve boundless growth and happiness in life.

The legends associated with Pradosh Vrat

When Lord Vishnu came down as the Kurma Avataar (incarnation as a tortoise), the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) took place. The King of Nagas, Vasuki offered himself as the churning rope around Mount Mandara who acted as the churning rod. The Devas took the tail end of the snake, and the Asuras took the snake’s head. The churning began and caused innumerable things to come out of the ocean, among which Halahala (lethal poison) was one. The poisonous fumes slowly started to affect the Devas and Asuras, who were trying to churn the ocean. If not stopped, this venom could cause the end of the universe. Hence, the Devas and Asuras pleaded with Lord Shiva to save the universe.

Before Halahala could cause any harm, Lord Shiva stepped in and consumed the poison.

He held it in his throat without swallowing, thereby turning the color of his neck, blue.

It is this incident that earned Lord Shiva the name Neelkanth (blue neck).

This incident happened on the twelfth Moon day.

The Devas and Asuras soon got hold of the Amrit and started rejoicing immensely and forgot to thank Lord Shiva.

On the thirteenth day (trayodashi), they realized their mistake and asked him for forgiveness.

Lord Shiva forgave them, and this time of forgiveness is believed to be Pradosham.
