Krishnapingala Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha
Mata Parvati Ji said to Lord Ganesha, “O son! Ashadha Krishna Chaturthi is said to be very auspicious and favourable. Please describe its story, significance, and rules.
What is the name of Ganesha Ji of Ashadha month and how should he be worshipped?”
Lord Ganesha replied, “O mother! In the past, Yudhishthira had asked this same question and whatever answer Lord Krishna had given to him, I am describing the same, please listen to it.”
Shri Krishna said, “O King Yudhishthira! I am telling you the story of Lord Ganesha which is described in the Puranas. Lord Ganesha is pleasing and destroys the evil spirits.
Please listen to this story.
O son of Kunti! The name of Ganesha Ji on Ashadha Krishna Chaturthi is Lambodara.
One should worship Lord Lambodara as per the Vidhi i.e. procedure described earlier as per the scriptures.
O Maharaja! In the Dwapara Yuga, there was a king named Mahijit in the city of Mahishmati.
He was a very pious and majestic king.
He used to take care of the people of his kingdom like his own children.
But being childless himself, the king didn’t feel happy even with all the luxuries of the kingdom.
In the Vedas, the life of a childless person is considered futile.
If a childless person donates water by performing Tarpana etc.
for his ancestors, then that water reaches his ancestors as hot water.
The king spent a lot of time in this confusion.
He performed various types of penance, donations, and Yajna etc.
to get a son, But the king didn’t get the joy of children.
Time passed and the king’s age kept on decreasing.
The king grew old, but he didn’t get a child.
Thereafter the king decided to discuss this matter with Brahmins, learned people and common people of his kingdom.
The king said, “O Brahmins and wise people! I am childless, so what will be my end?
I have not committed any sin in my life.
I have never snatched anyone’s wealth or woman by oppression.
I have always looked after the people of my kingdom like a son and have ruled by following the Dharma.
I have punished thieves, robbers, and wicked people.
I have always arranged food for my close friends, I have respected gentlemen and virtuous people while thinking about the welfare of Cows and Brahmins.
So, what is the reason for me not getting a son?”
The learned Brahmins said, “O Maharaja! We will make such efforts, which will increase your lineage.”
After saying this, everyone started thinking of a way to get a child for the king.
The entire public went to the forest with the Brahmins to fulfil the king’s desire.
In the Forest, they saw a great sage.
That great sage was engaged in rigorous penance without eating anything.
He was self-conqueror, anger-conqueror, eternal and knower of many Brahmas.
He was a great soul, fully versed in the Vedas, had a long life, was infinite and had the knowledge of many Brahmans.
His pious name was Lomash Rishi.
At the end of every Kalpa, one of his hairs would fall.
That is why he became famous as Lomash Rishi.
The entire public and the wise people including the king started seeing the Trikaladarshi Maharshi Lomesh.
Everyone reached the illustrious sage and with due respect and honour and stood in front of him.
On getting the Darshana of the Muni, all the people present there became delighted and started saying to each other that it was our good fortune that we got to see such a Muni.
Deciding that his teachings will bring good fortune to all of us, they said to Muniraja, “O Brahmarishi! Listen to the reason for our suffering.
We have come to you to get rid of our suffering.
O Lord! Please suggest a solution.
” Maharishi Lomesh asked, “Gentlemen! With what desire have you come here?
What is your purpose with me?
Please tell me clearly.
I will clear all your doubts.”
The Praja replied, “O Munivara! We are the residents of Mahishmati city.
The name of our king is Mahijit.
That king is the protector of Brahmins, pious, generous, brave and sweet-spoken.
That king has brought us up, but such a great king has not got a child till date.
O Lord! Parents are only the ones who give birth, but the king is the one who really nourishes public.
It is for the sake of that king that we have come to this dense forest.
O Maharishi! Please tell us about a method by which the king may get a child, because it is a matter of great misfortune that such a virtuous king does not have a son.
We have come to this dense forest after discussing among ourselves.
It is because of his good fortune that we have seen you.
O Munivara! By performing which fast, donation, worship etc.
will the king get a son?
Please be kind and describe it.”
Hearing the people, Maharishi Lomesh said, “O Devotees! Listen carefully.
I am describing the Sankata Nashana Vrat.
This fast gives children to the childless and wealth to the poor.
On Ashadha Krishna Chaturthi, worship Ganesha named Ekadanta Gajanana.
The king should observe the fast as per the method mentioned above, feed the Brahmins with devotion and donate clothes to them.
He will surely get a son by the grace of Lord Ganesha.”
Hearing this from Maharishi Lomesh, everyone stood up with folded hands.
All the people returned to the city after bowing down and paying obeisance.
The people described all the incidents that happened in the forest to the king.
The king was pleased to hear the people and he observed the fast of Ganesh Chaturthi with devotion and donated food and clothes to the Brahmins.
Queen Sudakshina got a beautiful and well-mannered son by the grace of Lord Ganesha.
Shri Krishna said, O King! This fast has such a divine effect.
The person who observes this fast with devotion enjoys all kinds of worldly pleasures.
O Maharaja! You should also observe this fast according to the procedure.
All your wishes will be fulfilled by the grace of Shri Ganesha Ji.
All your enemies will be destroyed, and you will get an everlasting kingdom.
Shri Krishna then said, O King! O Yudhishthira, the most precious of kings!
The men who observe this fast with devotion, whether they are sages or Munis who meditate in solitude or are scholars, they definitely get sons and grandsons without any obstacles.
The one who recites and listens to this pious story of Lord Ganesha gets success in all his works and all the obstacles are removed.”
